ISLAMABAD, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Acting President and Senate Chairman Farooq Hamid Naek and National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza visited the newly-launched Pakistan-China Friendship Center in Islamabad on Thursday.Naek and Mirza, with the company of Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Liu Jian, visited the friendship hall, conference rooms and other facilities in the center.They also toured a photography exhibition highlighting the history of the bilateral ties and an exhibition of masterpieces of the Chinese brush painting.In a message left on a guestbook, Naek viewed the friendship center as a symbol of the close friendly brotherly ties between the two countries. After her visit to the culture complex, Mirza said that all the facilities are much-needed, and it is an excellent gift from China for the people of Pakistan.Referring the year 2011 as Pakistan China Friendship Year, she hoped that cultural and social activities held in the center will further strengthen the existing strong ties and the brotherhood.The Pakistan-China Friendship Center was jointly inaugurated by visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani on Dec. 18.Liu Jian told Xinhua that the friendship center is not only a symbol of the friendship between China and Pakistan, it will also, with its accomplishment and handover, provide an important platform for the exchange of culture and economic trade activities between the two countries.The Chinese ambassador also hoped the center could be well utilized especially in terms of the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.Built in the forest garden area of Islamabad, the China-aided center is a multi-functional building with facilities for conferences, lectures, performances, exhibitions, cultural and trade activities. The foundation of the center was laid by Wen during his first visit to Pakistan in April 2005.
BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has stressed the need to stabilize commodity prices, extend the coverage of the social security network and boost employment to ensure the country develops in a comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable manner.Hu made the call Tuesday when presiding over lectures on economic development attended by members of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee.The lectures were given by two researchers respectively from the National Development and Reform Commission and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.Efforts should be made to establish a long-term mechanism that increases consumptions, renovate and upgrade traditional industries, and cultivate and support strategic emerging industries, Hu noted.Hu, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, called for deepening of the country's reform and opening up, adding that improving people's livelihood and ensuring their well-being, promoting economic growth and maintaining social stability are the Party's top agenda.Hu said impetus should be given to the development of the service industry as well as to the coordination of regional development, and vigorous yet steady endeavors should be made to advance urbanization.Hu also called for efforts to embrace reform and innovation in the country's economic, political, cultural and social systems and urged local authorities to seek opinions and advice from the people in formulating regional development blueprints.Further, Hu asked CPC officials to cement their ties with the people and do practical things for the public.
BANGKOK, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese military will adopt a more open and cooperative attitude when developing friendly ties with Thailand's armed forces, a senior Chinese defense official said Monday.Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army of China, made the pledge at the 9th Defence and Security Consultations between the Chinese and Thai Defence Ministries.Complex and profound changes are taking place in regional situations, said Ma. It is the responsibility of governments and armed forces in the region to enhance international cooperation, jointly cope with challenges, safeguard regional peace and stability to create favorable security conditions for common development, Ma said.The Chinese military is willing to boost in-depth, wide-ranging and all-dimensional ties with Thailand, building upon past achievements, Ma said.General Kittipong Keskowit, permanent secretary for defence of Thailand, hailed the long-lasting friendly cooperation between Thailand and China.He also expressed Thailand's willingness to continue carrying out close military exchanges and cooperation with China so as to contribute to the eternal friendship between the two countries and to the peace and stability of the region.During the event, Ma, on behalf of the Chinese military, donated 20 transport speedboats to Thailand to support its fight against the current floods.Ma arrived in Thailand on Saturday for a three-day visit at the invitation of the Thai Defence Ministry.
BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) Monday urged drivers to use extreme caution in Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi in southern China which has been hit by freezing rains.Motorists were asked to strictly follow the instructions of traffic police and drive slowly after the expressways in the regions were reopened for use after being temporarily closed due to the severe weather.Freezing rains that swept south China's Guizhou Province, Hunan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have caused road surfaces to ice up in parts of the Lanhai and Hukun Expressways.As a result, many vehicles in the regions were stranded.Local authorities have been ordered to take emergency measures to break up ice found on the roads, keep traffic moving and avoid shutting expressways.As of 4 p.m. Monday, the 1,500 vehicles that were stranded on Hukun Expressway near the juncture of Hunan and Guizhou provinces had safely reached Guizhou, traveling at speeds up to 30 kilometers per hour.Meanwhile, another 1,900 vehicles that had been stranded on National Highway 210 where Guangxi and Guizhou meet, have also reached Guizhou.Noting that Guizhou in the coming three days is expecting more icy rain, according to weather forecasts, Huang Ming, deputy minister at the MPS, stressed improved measures be taken to ensure traffic continues to flow in the region.
HANGZHOU, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun on Tuesday applauded the contributions that Chinese literary writers and authors had made to enriching people's lives and called on them to create more works that are true to life and close to people.Li, who is a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks in a congratulatory letter that was sent to the organizing committee of the fifth Lu Xun Literature Prize, one of China's most prestigious honors.The award ceremony was held in east China's Shaoxing City, the hometown of Lu Xun (1881-1936), one of China's most well-known contemporary authors and essayist, on Tuesday night.Named after Lu, the prize was first awarded in 1986.Writers of outstanding short- to middle-length novels, poems, prose, essays, reportage, literary reviews and theoretical works will receive the award, which is bestowed every two years.
