SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police said a man who was trying to sell basketball tickets Friday robbed a victim near San Diego State University as the NCAA basketball tournament was underway.The robbery happened about 11 a.m. in the east alley of 5100 College Ave., police said. The location is behind the ARCO gas station at the corner of Montezuma Rd.Officers said the suspect stole the victim’s money and may have been carrying a small knife. The victim was not hurt.The suspect ran toward the Aztec Student Union and was last seen near Campanile Drive.Police said the suspect is a black man in his late teens, about six-feet tall and 120 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University’s oldest known alumnus passed away just 17 days after celebrating his 107th birthday, the campus reported.According to school officials, William “Bill” Vogt is among the first students to set foot on the campus at Campanile Drive in 1931."It was during the Great Depression at a time when Edward L. Hardy, whom Vogt once recalled as “very low key,” was the school’s second president," the school said.SDSU said Vogt completed his "business degree course work in late 1934 when San Diego State had no official commencement ceremony for mid-year degree completion. Although he said he requested a diploma, he could not recall having ever received one."In 2018, SDSU President Adela de la Torre honored his request and presented Vogt with a diploma 83 years later during a ceremony.The school said that Vogt was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War and retired in 1970 with the rank of commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve."A notice of his death issued by the Navy said he enlisted in the Reserve with a rank of Yeoman First Class in 1940 and was called up Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He served as an intelligence officer at several locations, including California and Washington, D.C. While living in Seattle, he was called back to active duty upon the outbreak of the Korean War," the school said.Vogt's son described his father as a role model, best friend, and hero, but also as a loyal Aztecs basketball fan.“He saw 90 years of SDSU basketball and this was the best team in 90 years,” Bob Vogt said. “The team meant a lot to him." 1641

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say no foul play was involved with human remains discovered in a fire pit last month.The remains were discovered by a man on Oct. 29, 2020, just after 10:30 a.m. in the fire pit located on the east end of Fiesta Island, according to police. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sick and tired over school shootings, a Point Loma High School junior is trying to make change through one of his passions.He participated in Public Service Announcement contest, a collaboration between San Diego Crime Stoppers and the San Diego Unified School District Police Department. Students were required to create a PSA about an issue schools deal with, like bullying or substance abuse.Tim Fraher's 40-second PSA addressed school shootings, raising awareness about the ways it's easier to get a gun than a driver's license. He also wants people to take notice if a friend or classmate is getting bullied or seems depressed.Fraher says he wants people to take school shootings seriously."We need to do something. We can't just sit around and pray that it will go away because it won't. We need to actually get out there and actively reform and make changes so that this won't happen," said Fraher.Fraher won the competition, and his PSA will air on television in the San Diego region this June. "It felt good to know that the message will get across, that it will be out there," said Fraher.He hopes the 40-second message will encourage others to take a chance at making a change. 1216
