WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — If dedication to a passion distinguishes a champion from a crowd, Marlys Halbeisen just might be the one who stands out.“Nothing would be anything without her,” said Tamera Halbeisen, Marlys' daughter-in-law.“They’re not just getting a card, they’re getting a message from us saying – ‘We care about you,’” Marlys Halbeisen said.For the past three years, Marlys has transformed her Wheat Ridge home into a smaller version of Santa’s workshop for a cause near and dear to her heart.“My husband was in the military,” Marlys said. “He served in the Korean War.”In 2018, she personalized 2,700 Christmas cards for troops overseas.Last year, she did 18,000. And this year — an astounding 40,000.“The pandemic was good,” Marlys said, laughing. “I couldn’t go anywhere, so I just worked on cards.”KMGH first met Marlys last year, when the company she had lined up to ship the cards simply vanished.In the days that followed, KMGH viewers stepped up and donated so much money to the TV station's fund, that they not only paid for the shipping last year, they were able to pay for the cards and shipping this year, as well.“After visiting three stores, I bought 35,000 cards,” Marlys said.She also received about 5,000 donated cards.“Cards come every day," Marlys said. “Yesterday, I got a bag of cards.”The plan this year was to have multiple card-writing parties. That didn’t happen.“We were going to have everybody for the fun night – write the cards,” Marlys said. “Well, of course, the pandemic prevented that.”And yet, somehow, this 78-year-old would find the silver lining.“It was wonderful,” Marlys said. “I was never bored. Everybody said, ‘Oh, ‘I’m so bored.’ And I go, ‘Well, why don’t you write some cards?’”It’s also been said that one can’t expect everyone to have the same dedication as one does one's self.“Well, you know, I always thought that you find the best help at the end of your arms," Marlys said.And so it was. This one woman show who amazed us last year did it again this year.“Beyond proud,” Tamera said. “I mean, this has just given her even more dedication.”“This does make such a huge difference in a GI’s life,” said James Boxrud, manager with the U.S. Postal Service in Denver. “I remember being overseas at Christmas when I was in the service. WILMINGTON, Del. – President-elect Joe Biden is promising that his team is “going to get right to work” and is downplaying concerns that President Donald Trump’s refusal to acknowledge his victory could undermine national security.Trump has blocked his Democratic rival from receiving the intelligence briefings traditionally shared with incoming presidents, according to someone with knowledge of the situation but not authorized to disclose private conversations.Asked about the Republican resistance on Tuesday, Biden said it “does not change the dynamic at all in what we’re able to do.” He said additional intelligence briefings “would be useful,” but he doesn’t see anything slowing them down.“It would be nice to have it, but it’s not critical,” said Biden. “We’re just going to proceed the way we have. We’re going to do exactly what we’d be doing if he would have conceded and said we’ve won, which we have. And so, there’s nothing really changing.”Watch Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris speak below:Biden said he and his team are moving along in a “consistent manor,” putting together their administration and reviewing who they’d like to pick for cabinet positions.“Nothing’s going to stop that,” said Biden. “So, I’m confident that the fact that they’re not willing to acknowledge that we won at this point is not of much consequence in our planning and what we’re about to do between now and Jan. 20.”Biden also responded to comments from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said Monday that he supports Trump’s legal actions, despite there being little evidence of widespread voter fraud. Biden said he hasn’t gotten a chance to speak to McConnell yet, but he expects to relatively soon.“I think that the whole Republican Party has been put in a position, with a few notable exceptions, of being mildly intimidated by the sitting president,” said Biden. “But there’s only one president at a time. He’s president. We’re going to have the Electoral College, they’ll be making their judgment in December and it’ll be announced in early January, but in the meantime, I hope to get a chance to speak to Mitch.”When asked about the Trump administration blocking funding for the White House transition, Biden said he thinks his team can get things done without the money.“We can get through without the funding,” said Biden. “We don’t see anything that’s slowing us down, quite frankly.”So far, Biden said he’s been able to speak with six world leaders since he was projected to win the presidency on Saturday.“I’m letting them know that America is back. We’re going to be back in the game. It’s not America alone,” he said. “I’m confident that we’ll be able to put America back in a place of respect that it had before.”Biden said he believes Trump’s post-election behavior won’t help his legacy.“I know from my discussions with foreign leaders thus far, that they are hopeful that the United States’ democratic institutions are viewed as being strong and enduring,” said Biden. “I think at the end of the day, it’s all going to come to fruition on Jan. 20. White House chief of staff John Kelly has been locked in an internal struggle with President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner over his access to highly classified information for weeks now, a confrontation that has escalated amid a recent policy overhaul and the resignation of a staff secretary who was accused of spousal abuse.The dispute has deepened a growing rift between Kelly and Kushner, who initially welcomed the new system of rigor instituted by the chief of staff but has since grown frustrated by what he views as attempts to limit his access to the President.Kelly distributed a five-page memo Friday announcing that the White House will no longer allow some employees with interim security clearances to access to top secret information if their background investigation has been pending since before last June -- a category Kushner falls into.  899

When you think of police officers, you may think of the badge or the local precinct may come to mind, but a lasso?“You got to have a lasso in a small town,” Sgt. Jace Peterson said with a laugh.Sgt. Peterson says it is an item he never leaves home without. Home is Nephi, Utah and it has been most of his life.“Oh, I was a good kid who got in very little trouble,” Peterson said.Nephi is a "blink and you miss it" stop along Interstate-15 between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.Sgt. Peterson is just one of 10 full-time officers.“I just patrol all the corners of town, backstreets and the main thoroughfares,” he said.A disorderly conduct call sometimes comes in the form of a farm animal.“We’ve had cows and goats,” Peterson said. “I mean you name it and they run loose around here.”Sgt. Peterson knows he is just one call away from a surprise class reunion.“It makes it entertaining when you stop somebody you know or you’re on a call with somebody you went to high school with,” he said.Life moves at a slower pace in these parts. It is a stark contrast from what officers in major cities across the country are dealing with.“The rioting and the protest,” Sgt. Peterson said slowly shaking his head. “I mean, it starts to wear on you a little bit and know that other officers aren’t as lucky as we are.”The Nephi Chief of Police echoes those sentiments.“You know, the great thing is I had the big city policing experience when I was young,” said Chief Mike Morgan. “When I was young, I could get out and do the things that needed to get done and I was able to learn; that experience brought me here.”Like Peterson, Chief Morgan has come home.“There’s no place like home,” Chief Morgan said with a chuckle.The move from big city life means big changes.“There are no protests at all down here,” Chief Morgan said.The department is prepared for the day some of the bigger city issues may creep into town.“We’ve got all the equipment I could ever ask for and it’s such a great community,” Sgt. Peterson said.Even a worldwide pandemic is not affecting the small-town police force much.“I mean, we know it’s there and we know it’s just one bad day away, but until then, we’re just going to sort of enjoy it,” Sgt.
