BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- "Our confidence to face the global financial crisis should rely on science, knowledge and talented people," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Saturday.     He made the remark during a visit to Beijing-based Zhongguancun Science Park, known as China's Silicon Valley.     "I'm here to consult you on how to let science and technology play a good role for us to not only handle the current difficulties but lay a foundation for long-run development," said the premier. They gave greater importance to the power of knowledge, science and technology which have far-reaching effects, Wen said.     "In front of the crisis, everybody should stand up and be brave to take his responsibility," Wen emphasized.     He urged scientists to help domestic enterprises resolve difficulties, improve management, develop new products and create new technology.     The science park is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its founding this year.

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Zhou Yongkang underscored the importance of the rule of law in the country on Tuesday.     Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when addressing the 6th congress of the China Law Society at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.     President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice President Xi Jinping also attended the session.     In his address to the congress, Zhou first expressed appreciation and respect to all Chinese law workers for their contribution to the country.     Zhou said building a country ruled by law has always been the pursuit of the Chinese people.     He said after China initiated its reform and opening up drive 30 years ago, the country has seen remarkable progress in the improvement of its legal system, law education and research.     The principle of rule of law is the premise of the development of China and the well-being of the Chinese people, he said.     Zhou encouraged law workers in China to make further contributions to the country by giving advice on the country's development and safeguarding people's livelihood, thus help the country maintain economic growth and social stability.     Law workers must bear the people-first principle in their minds and try to safeguard the interests of the people according to law, when making or enforcing laws, and when providing legal services.     He also called for law workers to continue to popularize law education among the Chinese public, so that the whole society is encouraged to learn the laws, abide by the laws and use the laws to protect themselves.     Local party and government departments must help address the difficulties of law workers in order to create a favorable environment for law education and research and cultivate more law talents, Zhou demanded.     The China Law Society was founded in 1949 as a national association of legal scholars, jurists, law practitioners and an academic body of legal sciences. The society has now more than 140,000 members.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- China Saturday expressed "serious concerns" over India's anti-subsidy investigation on sodium nitrite on Jan. 14 and probe into the special safeguard measure of sodium carbonate on Jan. 16.     Following bilateral consultations, China has urged domestic businesses to contact their Indian peers and solve trade issues through talks and cooperation, Yao Jian, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce, said in a statement.     But India didn't respond to Chinese efforts and launched its first anti-subsidy probe over Chinese-made sodium nitrite, Yao said. "China expresses dissatisfaction over it," he noted.     China also expressed resolute opposition to India's probe into the special safeguard measure of sodium carbonate, the spokesman stated.     The probe not only hurts the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese businesses, but has negative impact on the stable bilateral trade relations, Yao said.     The current global financial crisis has serious impact on the economies worldwide and all nations need to boost cooperation in fighting the crisis, he said.     China hoped that India could show prudence and restraint in using trade remedies, as trade protectionism could only add to the grim world trade situation.     He added that China and India should step up consultations and promote cooperation among industries from the two developing nations.

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday outlined a series of proposals for local governments to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).     Touring SMEs in the southern province of Guangdong, Wen said SMEs would play a crucial role in promoting economic growth, increasing fiscal revenue, providing jobs and maintaining social stability. FUZHOU, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Construction on a new nuclear power plant started Friday in southeast China's Fujian Province.     The Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant, located in the coastal city of Fuqing, requires an investment of around 100 billion yuan (14.6 billion U.S. dollars).     It will have six units that generate millions of kilowatts each.     During the first phase of the project, two units will be built and put into operation in 2013 and 2014. They will use advanced second-generation pressurized water reactor technology. The two units are expected to generate more than 14 billion kilowatts of electricity annually, most of which would be consumed within the province. "To develop nuclear power is important for improving the country's energy structure and security."     China National Nuclear Corporation, Fujian company of China Huadian Corporation and the government-funded Fujian Investment & Development Co. Ltd. will jointly build and operate the plant.     The three companies have a stake of 51 percent, 39 percent and 10 percent, respectively, in the new plant.     An unidentified local government official said three billion yuan has already been spent since preparation work for the project started in 2007.Another five billion was planned for 2009.     The project is expected to create more than 10,000 jobs.     Currently, China has 11 nuclear power reactors in operation. All reactors employ second-generation nuclear power technologies.     The country plans to have 40-million-kilowatts of installed capacity in nuclear power by 2020, accounting for four percent of China's energy production.     Right now, installed capacity of nuclear power is only about nine million kilowatts, or about two percent of the total power the country produces.
