DENVER — A passenger’s vaping device is being blamed for a fire that disrupted operations at Denver International Airport last month.According to a Friday release from the Denver Fire Department, the dissembled device was inside the passenger’s travel bag when it caught fire as it passed through a TSA X-ray machine in the south checkpoint the evening of Jan. 30.The screening process was not a contributing factor in the fire, the release said.Airport officials released surveillance video of the incident Friday. The video, viewable above, shows a crowded security line just before the fire sent hundreds of passengers and TSA agents running.The fire was quickly put out by using a nearby portable fire extinguisher. However, the incident prompted DIA officials to temporally halt train service and security screening, causing significant delays throughout the airport.Fire investigators say the device’s exposed lithium-ion battery likely made contact with conductive materials in the bag, causing the battery to create a “dead short.” The short caused the battery to heat up combustible materials within the bag, leading to the fire.The fire was determined to be accidental, and no charges were filed.The FAA prohibits electronic cigarettes and vaping devices in checked bags, but the agency does allow the devices to be carried in a carry-on bag. However, many airlines have policies regarding the possession or use of these devices onboard aircraft. 1474

DENVER, Colo. — Voters in Denver, Colorado, overwhelmingly voted to pass Ballot Measure 2J to lift the cities more than 30 years old ban on pit bulls.Ballot Measure 2J passed with 64.5% voting to lift the ban and 35.5% voting to keep the ban in place.Passing the measure will allow the city to grant a provisional permit to pit bull owners as long as the owner microchips the animal and complies with additional requirements set by Denver Animal Protection.Denver Council member Christopher Herndon led the charge, proposing the idea to lift the pit bull ban in January.Denver City Council voted 7-4 to repeal the ban in February, which would have replaced the law with what could be best described as a “probation” for pit bulls. However, Mayor Hancock vetoed the ordinance just days later, saying in a letter he could not support the legislation because it did not, "fully addresses the very real risk to a severe injury that can result from attacks from these particular dog breeds, especially should they happen to a child."The law banning pit bulls was put in place in 1989 after 20 people had been attacked by pit bulls in the previous five years.One was a 3-year old who died from the attack in 1986. Hancock argued in his letter to the council that less than 20% of all pets in Denver are currently licensed, which "raises significant questions about the effectiveness of this proposed new system."Proponents said breed-specific bans do not work and enforcing the ban has cost the City of Denver more than .8 million.Aurora, Lone Tree, Louisville, and Commerce City still have bans on pit bulls, though Castle Rock repealed their ban in 2018. Data crunching firm Palantir Technologies is denying claims made by Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wylie that it has links to the controversial company.Wylie, a former contractor for Cambridge Analytica, the firm at the center of a debate over how social media data is used, told a UK parliamentary committee on Tuesday that senior Palantir staff had access to user data gleaned from Facebook."There were senior Palantir employees that were also working on the Facebook data," said Wylie. DETROIT - The bodies of 11 infants were found in the ceiling of a former funeral home on Detroit's east side Friday evening, according to Detroit Police. Police say the bodies were found in a box and in a small casket. Cadaver dogs were on scene, and in all police found the 11 bodies of infants and stillborns. The Cantrell Funeral Home was shut down earlier this year due to several violations and "deplorable, unsanitary conditions." Police say a tip through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) sparked the investigation. LARA reported Cantrell Funeral Home had 60 days to either assign its existing prepaid contracts to another person registered under the Prepaid Act and notify the Department and contract buyers of the assignment within 30 days of the assignment.The funeral home's other option was to cancel their current contracts and issue refunds to each contract buyer, providing copies of refund checks and correspondence to each contract buyer to the Department within 90 days, unless the Department modifies, vacates, or extends the terms of the Order.A spokesperson from LARA has released this statement regarding their investigation: 1228
