BEIJING/FUZHOU, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- A plane chartered by the Chinese government flew 14 Chinese fishermen illegally seized by Japanese authorities from Japan to the southeast China port city of Fuzhou Monday afternoon, after China's repeated solemn representations.The fishermen were detained after the trawler they were aboard collided with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol vessels near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea last Tuesday. SHANGHAI, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- An official of one of China's top government think tanks called on Saturday for the readjustment of the nation's breakneck expansion of the auto industry as an explosion of new cars on China's roads aggravates problems with pollution and congestion.Liu Shijin, deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, told a forum that the government should shift its guidance to automakers from mere pursuit of output capacity to environment-friendly and energy-saving targets.Also, auto manufacturers should strengthen their safety and quality control standards, he said.Sales of domestically-manufactured autos rose 36 percent year on year to reach 13.14 million units in the months through September, as lower-priced automobiles have become more affordable for better-off Chinese people, according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on Oct. 12.In fact, annual sales and production could exceed 17 million, CAAM said.Although the expansion has brought an industrial boom to the country and boosted domestic demand, it has also triggered widespread concerns over the country's energy capacity, pollution levels and notorious traffic jams.In Beijing, the increasing number of private cars, along with heavy rainfall and a spurt in holiday travel, caused a record 140 traffic jams on a single Friday evening last month. In some parts of the city on that day people spent nearly two hours on what would normally have been a 15-minute commute.Further, Liu said increasing social problems arising from the country's industrial boom has made its future development unsustainable, which is a test for the government.He also suggested government allow market forces to play a larger role in allocating resources, and also permit uncompetitive producers to be phased out.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Marine Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) will conduct a joint drill with their counterpart of Thailand, China's Ministry of National Defense said Wednesday.Called "Blue Assault-2010," the joint drill will take place in Sattahip, Thailand, from Oct. 26 to Nov. 14, a ministry statement said.The joint training exercise will be the first for the PLA marines, according to the statement.The joint drill will focus on anti-terrorism. It will also aim at helping marines from Thailand and China learn from each other, enhance mutual understanding, step up friendly exchange and cooperation in a bid to improve the capabilities of both countries' marine corps to handle new challenges and threats together.

DALIAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday called on the young in Russia and China to pass on the friendship forged during World War II.Medvedev made the call in a meeting Sunday morning with more than 20 veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), part of WWII.The Russian leader, who arrived in the northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday morning, first laid flowers at a monument commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs.In the following meeting with Chinese and Russian veterans, Medvedev said Russians and Chinese forged profound friendship in their joint fight against the Nazis, and such friendship constituted the solid foundation for the relationship between the two countries.The Russian President thanked Russian and Chinese veterans for their contributions to peace.He also thanked China for renovating the memorial, which was one of more than 70 memorials commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs throughout China. All those memorials had been refurbished to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory of WWII.Dalian was the first stop of Medvedev's three-day visit to China. This was also Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.Later Sunday, Medvedev flew to Beijing to continue his state visit to China.During his stay in Beijing, Medvedev will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and call on other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.Medvedev will also travel to east China's metropolis of Shanghai, where, on the next day, he will meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and attend events marking the Russia Day at the ongoing World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.
