BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China strongly opposes a declaration issued by the European Union on a Chinese human rights case, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here Sunday.Qin made the remarks in response to a question on China's attitude towards the EU declaration.The EU said in its declaration that it regrets the decision of the higher people's court of Sichuan Province to confirm the sentence of Tan Zuoren to five years in prison for "subversion of state power."It also appeals to the Chinese government to release Tan unconditionally.Tan Zuoren, a former magazine editor, was sentenced in February on the charge of inciting subversion of state power. This week, the Sichuan provincial higher people's court upheld Tan's five-year prison term.Qin said, China's justice department handled the case independently according to the Chinese law.The EU declaration has interfered in China's judicial affairs," Qin said. "China firmly opposes and is strongly dissatisfied over it."Qin hoped the EU would respect China's judicial sovereignty and safeguard the overall situation of Sino-EU relations.

ZHAOYUAN, Shandong, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Fourteen miners were confirmed dead, 23 others still trapped underground while 292 were lift to the ground safely following a fire that engulfed a gold mine in east China's Shandong Province Friday, local authorities said early Saturday morning.A total of 329 miners were working underground when the fire broke out at about 5 p.m. at the Luoshan Gold Mine run by Lingnan Mining Co. Ltd. in Zhaoyuan city, a spokesman with the rescue headquarters told Xinhua.Three hundred and six were lifted to the ground as of 5 a.m., but 14 of them were found dead, he said.Twenty-three people were still trapped underground, with 21 miners' locations identified, he added.Dozens of injured miners had been sent to two local hospitals, he said.An initial investigation showed that the fire was likely caused by an underground cable. Police were further investigating the incident.The mine owner had been taken into police custody, he said.Over 100 rescuers are working at the scene. Provincial Party chief Jiang Yikang and governor Jiang Daming have rushed to the scene to oversee the rescue work.

GUANLING, Guizhou, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a rain-triggered landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province had risen to 13 after rescuers recovered another two bodies Thursday night, rescue headquarters said.Some 2,000 people continued the rescue operation, but the chance of survival for the other 86 villagers was slim after being buried under mud for three days, rescuers said.More bodies are expected to be found as rescuers comb the ruins."It is almost impossible for any of the trapped to be alive now. We are doing our utmost to retrieve the bodies.
