Albertsons wants to scoop up Rite Aid.The deal announced Tuesday will create a new company with about billion in annual sales and 4,900 stores across the country.Albertsons pharmacies will be rebranded as Rite Aid and some Rite Aids will continue to operate as stand-alone stores. Rite Aid CEO John Standley will become CEO of the new combined company.Walgreens wanted to buy up all of Rite Aid in 2015, but federal regulators nixed that agreement on antitrust grounds. In September, the two companies announced a scaled back version for nearly 2,000 of Rite Aid's stores. That left Rite Aid with around 2,600 stores.The move will allow Albertsons to become "a fully integrated one-stop-shop," Miller said in a statement.Rite Aid jumped 24% in pre-market trading.Albertsons is a privately held company and Rite Aid is public. ALEXANDRIA, Ky. — One northern Kentucky family honored their lost wife and mother by paying it forward to brighten the morning of dozens of people.The Peters family celebrated what they called "Family Friday," where every Friday they put aside distractions and did something together."Our family began our Family Friday in the drive-thru at Dunkin'," 11-year-old Davis Peter said."Every Friday, especially when he was out of school, we would make sure we would enjoy time together as a family," Barry Peters, Davis' father, said. Then, in June, Laura Peters, Barry's wife and Davis' mom, died after going into cardiac arrest at 41 years old. "Since then we have learned to walk in a new normal," Barry said. Barry and Davis wanted to honor Laura, so they made a trip to Dunkin'.Laura "ran on Dunkin'," Davis said, getting coffee there at least four times a week. With that in mind, Davis and Barry did some math to figure out how much Laura would have spent at Dunkin' over six months."Since it's been six months, that would be four medium coffees a week at a piece for the last 26 weeks, equaling 8," Davis said. Barry and Davis then made a trip to Dunkin' with that money."I need you to take the 8; that's how much coffee she would have drank over the last six months," Davis said. "I need you to pay for everyone behind us until it runs out."Barry and Davis then watched from the parking lot as cars rolled up and ordered their morning cup of Joe."Every time somebody pulled up and we'd say, 'You're paid for,' everybody's mouth just fell," Amanda Jones, a shift leader at Dunkin', said. About 60 percent of restaurants that had to close during the pandemic are now permanently closed, according to review site Yelp.Across industries, Yelp reports that 132,580 businesses that were listed as “open” on March 1 are now marked “closed”, and roughly 55 percent of those closures are permanent. Those percentages translate to 72,842 businesses permanently closed as of July 10 that were open in March, and more than 15,700 of those are restaurants.Las Vegas is suffering from the highest rate of closed businesses, with 861 that are now permanently closed. Las Vegas has seen a huge decrease in tourism, and according to Yelp, this accounts for the spike in closures.The rate of permanent closures has increased since April as the coronavirus pandemic spreads and businesses of all kinds are forced to close or adjust how they interact with customers, sometimes resulting in fewer sales. Yelp reports that the number of total closures, though, has fluctuated as states reopen and close down again based on outbreaks.However, some businesses are seeing far fewer permanent closures. These include professional services like lawyers, accountants, web design and tutors or educators. Health services like physicians, mental health services, and health coaches are also seeing fewer permanent closures during the pandemic.“With nearly every state (and even county) taking a tailored approach to reopening local economies we expect these shifts in consumer interest and business closures to continue to move at an unpredictable pace,” the report stated.As businesses opened up in June, Yelp reports that people are searching for alcohol-related experiences, with an increase in searches for wineries (up 51 percent since May), cideries (up 39 percent) and breweries (up 24 percent).
