For one Tennessee Spanish teacher, what began as free money for qualified students on the path to a career in education has turned into a two-year nightmare.“It has been wearing on me emotionally and mentally,” Kaitlyn McCollum said. In 2009, as a senior in high school, McCollum applied for and received the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant Program, also known as the TEACH grant. It paid for her undergraduate college. In exchange, McCollum agreed to teach a high-need subject for four years at a low income school, which she's been doing since graduating from Middle Tennessee State University in 2013. “The very basis of the TEACH grant is to promote teachers joining the field,” McCollum said. However, in 2016 that free money disappeared.“It was a huge slap in the face, huge slap in the face,” she said.  McCollum sent paperwork to Fedloan, the company that oversees the grant, on July 29, 2016. The deadline was July 31. She admits the paperwork might've gotten there a day or two late, but the next letter she received in August wasn't what she expected.“In a one line, very cold sentence, says ‘your grants have now been converted to loans, period,’” McCollum said. She now owes the ,000 she was given in grant money plus the accrued interest. “It was this instant overnight debt of ,000,” she said. McCollum immediately appealed, but was denied. She's contacted state leaders in Tennessee and spent the last two years going back and forth with Fedloan about the paperwork issue. She said they're missing the bigger picture.“If I’m saddled with ,000 plus accruing more interest, am I going to stay in education? Maybe not,” McCollum said. McCollum has learned since 2016 that thousands of teachers across the country are in the same boat. While the Attorney General's Office in Massachusetts has opened a case, she hopes her story will be seen and heard by the right people here in Tennessee.  2069

For the first time since 2003, the American Heart Association is updating the comprehensive guidelines for blood pressure and hypertension.According to a release from the AHA, patients with a blood pressure reading of 130/80 should now be considered to have hypertension, or abnormally high blood pressure. Previously, a blood pressure level of 140/90 was the baseline for being diagnosed with hypertension. The new guidelines from the AHA mean that nearly half of all American adults — 46 percent — suffer from hypertension. By the AHA’s old standards, 32 percent of American adults suffered from high blood pressure. “We want to be straight with people – if you already have a doubling of risk, you need to know about it,” said Dr. Paul K. Whelton, the lead author of the AHA’s new guidelines. “It doesn’t mean you need medication, but it’s a yellow light that you need to be lowering your blood pressure, mainly with non-drug approaches.”Despite an increase in the amount of Americans with high blood pressure, the AHA hopes their new guidelines mean there will be only a small increase in the amount of patients requiring medication. The Association now generally recommends that patients with Stage 1 hypertension only be prescribed medication in the event of a heart attack or stroke, and they’re also recommending that pharmaceutical companies combine multiple blood pressure drugs. The AHA also hopes the new guidelines encourage patients to monitor their blood pressure at home, away from a stressful setting like a doctor’s office that can skew a single blood pressure test.According to the AHA, the new guidelines were developed by 21 science and health experts who reviewed more than 900 published studies. The new AHA guidelines for diagnosing hypertension are listed below. 1803

Former President George H.W. Bush is facing allegations that he squeezed a teenager's buttocks in 2003.In an interview with Time magazine published Monday, Roslyn Corrigan said she was 16 years old when Bush, then 79, touched her inappropriately at a November 2003 event in The Woodlands, Texas, office of the CIA, where her father had gathered with fellow intelligence officers and family members to meet Bush.Corrigan told the magazine Bush groped her buttocks as she and her mother, Sari Young, posed for a photograph with the former president. 555

Former President George W. Bush said Sunday that he has extended congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on winning the 2020 presidential election, breaking with prominent members of his party in the process. In a statement released by the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the 43rd president said he is optimistic that Biden will help bring the country together."Though we have political differences, I know Joe Biden to be a good man, who has won his opportunity to lead and unify our country," Bush said in a statement. "The President-elect reiterated that while he ran as a Democrat, he will govern for all Americans. I offered him the same thing I offered Presidents Trump and Obama: my prayers for his success, and my pledge to help in any way I can."Bush also acknowledged President Donald Trump's intent to challenge the election results on allegations of massive voter fraud, which thus far have proven to be baseless."President Trump has the right to request recounts and pursue legal challenges, and any unresolved issues will be properly adjudicated," Bush said. "The American people can have confidence that this election was fundamentally fair, its integrity will be upheld, and its outcome is clear."By issuing congratulations to Biden, Bush — the only former Republican president currently living — has broken with the majority of top Republicans currently serving in government. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy have not yet publicly acknowledged Biden as President-elect, and several other prominent Republicans have publicly refused to declare Biden the victor despite projections from most major media outlets.Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan are among the few Republicans who have acknowledged Biden's projected victory."We must come together for the sake of our families and neighbors, and for our nation and its future," Bush said.Bush also congratulated America as a whole for setting records in voter turnout. Biden and Trump both received more votes in the 2020 election than any other presidential candidate in previous elections."The fact that so many of our fellow citizens participated in this election is a positive sign of the health of our democracy and a reminder to the world of its strength," Bush said. "No matter how you voted, your vote counted." 2408

Following economic shutdowns to slow the spread of the coronavirus, and with the US still dealing with the spread forthe pandemic, experts from the UCLA foresee a US economic depression into 2023.The researchers say that unemployment levels of 10% could persist into the fall, and 6% unemployment could remain through the end of 2022.US unemployment was below 4% earlier this year."To call this crisis a recession is a misnomer. We are forecasting a 42% annual rate of decline in real GDP for the current quarter, followed by a 'Nike swoosh' recovery that won't return the level of output to the prior fourth quarter of 2019 peak until early 2023," writes UCLA Anderson Forecast senior economist David Shulman in an essay titled "The Post-COVID Economy."The researchers note that the economy has already hit rock bottom. But GDP and employment levels won’t see a quick recovery. But Shulman said that the entire economic meltdown cannot be blamed on the coronavirus. Shulman and UCLA researchers say the pandemic has accelerated economic trends that were already moving toward increased digitization of business functions and online commerce. 1149
