SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When it comes to wrong-way crashes in San Diego County, 2018 is off to an unfortunate start.There have been numerous wrong-way vehicle crashes around the county nearly eight weeks into the new year, and authorities have not been able to pinpoint what exactly is causing an uptick in these types of crashes.According to Caltrans data, from 1995-2012, an average of 23 people died each year in wrong-way crashes on California roadways.San Diego had 13 wrong-way fatalities recorded in 2015 -- the last year Caltrans data was compiled for wrong-way crashes.In 2017, Caltrans launched a two-year pilot program in San Diego and Sacramento that focuses on ways to not only prevent wrong-way crashes but to also alert authorities in the event a vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction.As part of the test program, Caltrans has deployed reflective pavement markings on off-ramps and signs with flashing lights that turn on if a wrong-way vehicle is detected.Caltrans has not yet provided data collected from the program to determine the protective measures' effectiveness.Here's a look at wrong-way crashes on San Diego County roadways in the past 12 months.Feb. 20, 2018: Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after wrong-way crash-- A driver was hospitalized -- and also arrested -- after police said he was driving in the wrong direction on Fairmount Ave. when he hit another vehicle. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A group of ten college girls rode their bikes from Seattle to San Diego to fight sex trafficking. The group is comprised of women from Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Alabama.Beginning in Seattle and ending in San Diego, these first-time riders biked down the West Coast, meeting with communities and local leaders along the way to spark conversations and raise money for the long-term, rehabilitative care for children rescued from sex traffickers.This is the third year for Pedal the Pacific and this year they nearly doubled their financial goal. They ended up raising over 250 thousand dollars. The organization tells 10News, "The team just received a 0,000 donation from the Harry W. Bass Jr Foundation. The foundation says they were appalled by Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged crimes, but they found a positive way to make a difference with their donation to Pedal the Pacific."All of the money raised will be donated to The Refuge Ranch, the largest long-term, live-in rehabilitation facility for child survivors of sex trafficking in the US. 1071

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While America's current border with Mexico has stood since 1848, the wall — or "barrier" — between the two countries is not as old.The divide has seen patchwork fencing over much of the area, largely leading to President Donald Trump calling for a new wall to be constructed.Here's how the current U.S.-Mexico border stands:THE CURRENT WALL...The current barrier between the U.S. and Mexico was settled in the Boundary Treaty of 1970. The treaty resolved any pending differences the countries had regarding the dividing line.This physical border stretches 654 miles from California into Texas, until hitting 1,300 miles of borderless separation. The full border, however, runs from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.Congress passed the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which called for a permanent wall to be constructed along the U.S.-Mexico border, along with technologic improvements in surveillance and security. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two children suffered injuries Monday when a pick-up truck driven by an elderly man hit tables and parked cars outside a University City Starbucks.The crash happened about 8 a.m. outside the coffee shop at 3202 Governor Drive at Regents Road, according to San Diego Police. The Starbucks is near the University City Post Office.The 85-year-old man driving the truck jumped the curb, crashing into customers.A 6-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Police did not release details about her condition. A 2-year-old girl had an injury to her lip but did not need further treatment.San Diego Police have not announced what caused the crash. 689
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Voters across San Diego County could end up with the final say over massive housing developments proposed for the backcountry.That's if voters themselves approve an initiative headed to the March 2020 ballot. The measure, called S.O.S., for Safeguard our San Diego Countryside, would trigger a public countywide vote anytime the County Board of Supervisors moves to increase density in the general plan to make way for more housing. "When you put cities where there are no roads, where there isn't fire service, there aren't schools, the cost of the infrastructure is going to be borne by the general taxpayer," said Mark Jackson, with the Yes on S.O.S. campaign. But a group of developers, economists and union are sounding the alarm about the initiative, which they say would make the region's housing crisis even worse. A county report found that the public vote would add a year of delay to projects and increase the cost by as much as .3 million. Meanwhile, housing prices would rise as supply remains tight. "Many new officers have young families, and those families are hit the hardest by anti-growth and anti-housing measures like S.O.S.," said Jack Schaeffer, president of the San Diego Police Officers Association. Both sides agree San Diego County needs more housing. However, the proponents of the measure note the general plan already calls for 60,000 new homes for all income levels. Those opposed counter that those would largely be expensive, built on multi-acre lots. They add that this initiative could impact development proposals with as little as six housing units. The initiative made its way to the March ballot after the "yes" campaign got 107,000 signatures. That's the same election in which voters will decide the fate of the massive Newland Sierra development in Escondido, a 2,000-home master plan the county approved in 2018.
