A pre-teen's basketball shot from beyond the arc was good for more than just a few points in Springfield.Springfield police say a group of ten-to-twelve-year-old kids helped them catch a suspected burglar on the run. It all started after officers responded to a call for a burglary. Police say they received reports that a 50-year-old male had just broken into a garage and stole several items, including two weed trimmers before taking off on a bike. He dropped the lawn tools after encountering police and rode awat. According to a post from the Springfield Police Department, the first officer followed him in his patrol car until backup arrived and started chasing him on foot.That's where the young All-Stars come into play.  Police say the kids were playing basketball nearby and one of them "threw a basketball across the roadway at the suspect, striking him, causing him to wreck his bicycle in the grass."Officers were then able to book the suspect into custody for burglary.  1033

A new complaint unsealed Friday revealed extraordinary new details of how Russian trolls manipulate U.S. politics and try to fool unsuspecting Americans on social media.A Kremlin-friendly oligarch has allegedly continued pumping millions of dollars into the St. Petersburg troll farm that was responsible for interfering with the 2016 election.The Justice Department said the Russians "took extraordinary steps" to hide the fact that their controversial posts were coming from foreign meddlers. To make that happen, managers at the troll farm gave employees comprehensive instructions on how to pose as American activists, according to a court filing. Often these directions accompanied real article that the trolls would share, along with their own comments. 767

A police officer in Socorro, Texas, which is about 20 minutes southeast of El Paso, is being hailed a hero after he ran into a house that was on fire to rescue a family.According to a press release on the Socorro Police Department's Facebook page, Officer Joshua Gonzalez is the officer who ran inside the home on Monday. 329

A self-driving vehicle operated by Waymo was involved in a crash in Chandler on Friday afternoon. Helicopter footage from Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix showed significant damage to the self-driving van, as well as a silver sedan, after the collision near Chandler Village Drive and Chandler Boulevard. Minor injuries were reported in the crash.Chandler police said the Waymo van was in autonomous mode with an occupant behind the wheel at the time of the crash, but was not the "violator vehicle."Police spokesman Seth Tyler said it is believed that this is the first Waymo collision in Chandler this year.RELATED: Waymo gives?360-degree?view of what it's like inside self-driving carsThis is the second known self-driving car crash in the Phoenix area in the past two months. A multistate outbreak of listeria has been traced to a Houston manufacturer's Vietnamese ready-to-eat pork products, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week. Long Phung Food Products has issued a recall of its ready-to-eat pork products, which were shipped nationwide.Four people were hospitalized after eating Long Phung anchovy-marinated pork patty rolls manufactured between May 21 and November 16 and labeled with establishment number "EST. 13561." No deaths have been reported.Listeria is the third leading cause of death from food poisoning in the United States, according to the CDC, and is especially dangerous for anyone with a weakened immune system, over age 65 or pregnant. Symptoms usually occur within four weeks of infection but can take as long as 70 days to appear. In some cases, the first signs of infection are diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Typical symptoms that follow include headache, stiff neck, fever, muscle pain, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.Pregnant women are especially at risk. According to the CDC, they are 10 times more likely to get a listeria infection, and the odds are even higher for Hispanic pregnant women, who are 24 times more likely to get listeria.Although pregnant women typically experience only flu-like symptoms, the danger to the developing fetus is high. Infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery or stillbirth.Newborns with listeriosis can develop blood infections, meningitis and other serious and potentially life-threatening complications. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.The illness has affected people in Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Michigan, but the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said it is concerned that families and businesses may have stored frozen products.
