A Russian who allegedly worked on funding online propaganda efforts to manipulate voters in the 2016 and 2018 elections was charged with a federal crime Friday as part of a wider conspiracy to hurt American democracy.Elena Alekseevna Khusyaynova, 44, of St. Petersburg, Russia, is charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States for managing the financing of the social media troll operation that included the Internet Research Agency, which special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators charged with crimes earlier this year.Prosecutors who unsealed the complaint Friday say she aided the Russian effort to "inflame passions" online related to immigration, gun control and the Second Amendment, the Confederate flag, race relations, LGBT issues, the Women's March and the NFL National Anthem debate from December 2016 until May 2018.The social media efforts specifically focused on the shootings of church members in Charleston, South Carolina, and concert attendees in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Charlottesville "Unite the Right" rally, which left one counterprotester dead, and police shootings of African-American men, the complaint says. The criminal charge says the Russians' online manipulation effort focused on multiple political viewpoints and candidates, but frequently zeroed in on the Republican Party's most well-known leaders. In one effort to spread an online news article about the late Sen. John McCain's position on a border wall to stop illegal immigration, an alleged conspirator directed others to "brand McCain as an old geezer." They also attempted to paint House Speaker Paul Ryan as "a complete and absolute nobody incapable of any decisiveness" and as a "two-faced loudmouth."They aimed other efforts at stories about Jeb Bush, Sen. Marco Rubio and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, pushed to "fully support" Donald Trump, and called Mueller "a puppet of the establishment," according to the complaint.  1959

A pair of major Disney-released blockbusters, "Black Panther" and the upcoming "Mary Poppins Returns," join "A Star is Born" and a mix of smaller movies in the American Film Institute's annual roster of the most outstanding achievements in film and television. The juried awards, voted on by industry executives and producers, journalists and academics, also recognized "BlacKkKlansman," "Eighth Grade," "If Beale Street Could Talk," "The Favourite," "First Reformed," "Green Book" and another box-office hit, "A Quiet Place," in the film category.Although left off the 10-best list, Netflix's "Roma," the Spanish-language entry from director Alfonso Cuarón, was chosen to receive a special award as "a work of excellence outside the Institute's criteria for American film." To be eligible, movies must have "significant creative and/or production elements from the United States."On the television side, a separate jury recognized four series from the FX network: "The Americans," "Atlanta," and two shows from producer Ryan Murphy, "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" and "Pose."Other honorees were spread among various players, including HBO's "Barry" and "Succession," Netflix's "The Kominsky Method," Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," and AMC's "Better Call Saul." NBC's hit drama "This is Us" was the lone broadcast program to grace the list, while the most glaring oversights would be the past two Emmy winners for best drama, "Game of Thrones" and "The Handmaid's Tale."The AFI will honor the winners at a luncheon event in January. 1575

A teenage worker at a Chili's restaurant in Baton Rouge says she was attacked by a large group of women while trying to enforce COVID-19 restaurant guidelines.According to WAFB, 17-year-old Kelsy Wallace was working her hostess position at the Chili's on Constitution Avenue when she was attacked by a group of 11 or more women on Sunday, August 9.The women had apparently become irate after requesting to be sat together. Wallace said that restaurant policy only allows for groups of up to six to sit together.Wallace tells WAFB that she got the manager to deal with the women when an exchange of words between Wallace and the women led to an altercation. One woman, according to Wallace, took a wet floor sign and struck her near her eye.Officers were called to the scene but the women had left by the time they arrived.Wallace was taken to the hospital to get stitches for her eye. During the altercation, some of her hair was pulled out and nails broke. A volcanic eruption has spewed molten rock and hazardous gas from the ground in a small community on Hawaii's Big Island, sending people fleeing from their homes as trees burn and the threat of more destruction is feared.Cracks in Kilauea volcano's rift zone -- an area of fissures miles away from the summit -- erupted Thursday and early Friday, spurting lava in Leilani Estates, a community of about 1,700 people near the Big Island's eastern edge.Video posted on social media Thursday showed magma spewing several feet into the air from a new crack in a Leilani Estates street. Aerial videos showed lava searing a long orange and smoky line through a wooded area. 674

A Southwest Airlines flight from Chicago to Newark, New Jersey, made an unplanned landing Wednesday after a window cracked, the Federal Aviation Administration and passengers said.Flight 957 was diverted to Cleveland after a report of an issue with a window aboard the aircraft, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory said. It landed safely at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, she said.Passenger Linda Holley texted her son Ryan with a picture of the damaged window."Window on plane cracked during flight. Landing in Cleveland to be safe. Everything ok but scary," one of her texts read.In another, she said: "Yes Southwest. Just heard loud noise. Very large crack with piece of window missing at bottom. Just landed. Everything ok. Don't know plan yet"The FAA said it will investigate what caused the window to crack. So far, the cause is not known. There was no depressurization in the cabin, and therefore the oxygen masks were not deployed, FAA spokesman Greg Martin said. He said the pilot did not declare an emergency but did ask to divert to a nearby airport. This is the second high-profile flight diversion by a Southwest Airlines plane in less than three weeks. On April 17, Southwest Flight 1380 made an emergency landing after an engine was damaged mid-flight.One person died after being partially sucked out a window. But passengers and even the President lauded Captain Tammie Jo Shults for safely landing the plane. 1435
