SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Visitors and locals are expected to flock to San Diego beaches this Fourth of July weekend.While some beaches will close in California for the holiday weekend, San Diego County officials will keep local beaches open.San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said no COVID-19 community outbreaks had been linked to beaches, and without the data, it would not make sense to close them off.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, leaders of San Diego’s coastal communities said they believe they can manage the enforcement of social distancing and facial coverings this weekend.Longtime Solana Beach residents Richard and Lori Brenckman are frustrated by the idea of crowds flocking to the beaches during a pandemic.“The general public has shown that it’s not trustworthy to social distance,” said Lori Brenckman. “They want to gather, and most people have proven that they won’t follow the rules.”Beachgoers are required to maintain social distancing and wear a facial covering when they come within six feet of someone not from the same household. Mixing with other groups is prohibited.Lifeguards across the county are preparing for the busy weekend.“It is the big holiday of the summer, so we expect giant crowds,” said Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero with San Diego Fire-Rescue. “This a tourist destination; everyone wants to come to San Diego. It’s a great place to hang out.”Romero said extra lifeguards would be in place both Friday and Saturday. “We’re just asking people for some compliance, have some common sense, be nice to each other,” he said.Elevated surf and the possibility of dangerous rip currents are expected over the weekend.California Gov. It's a saying at the heart of a new experiment called itsblackandwhite.us.Ryan Berman, along with Ahab Nimry and several other marketing and advertising agency representatives say they wanted to figure out how to start a constructive conversation about things like race, implicit bias and equity."For one, getting perspective and understanding a bias you might have because you can't do anything about it if you can't spot it," said Berman.So they came up with a 10 question, online survey that asks things like, "Do you believe hard work puts you on your path for a promotion?Do you have a close friend that is black?""We're not trying to nudge you one way or the other, we're just trying to say hey pick a side lets start talking and work this out," explained Nimry.At the end, you get to see how other people responded and access links to learn more, donate to civil rights organizations, even register to vote.The creators say the idea is to share what they learn and then take all that data and develop a sort of "seal of approval" for consumers to know how different companies stack up."Launching almost a diversity/inclusion certification for organizations," said Berman. "It's not about calling out companies. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)— Many residents in San Diego County woke up to a big mess after yesterday’s storms brought in the steady rain. Many people witnessed an early morning recovery mission in San Diego Bay Sunday. A 30-foot boat was found partially underwater at La Playa Cove near Shelter Island. San Diego Harbor Police believed no one was inside. But, a friend of the boat owner thought last night’s weather and rough waters might be the reasons it sank.“They may have come in last night during the storm and coming in, the boat sank on them,” friend of the boat owner, Jeff Gough said. Meanwhile, in North County, a large pine tree toppled down onto Eldorado Drive in Escondido.“There was room for like one car width for people to go around it,” homeowner Richard Bensinger said. Bensinger remembered when he planted what was a tiny Christmas tree in his front lawn 15 years ago. It has since grown to be more than 30 feet tall. Bensinger was shocked it came down this morning. He knows now, not to underestimate the power of mother nature.“It was angled a bit, but the roots were spread all over the place. So I'm surprised it actually fell over, but it’s just been so wet and muddy out there, and as you can see, all that mud pulled the whole thing over,” Bensinger said. He now has to live with a pile of pine chunks on his front lawn until county crews come to pick them up. Still, he is relieved no one was hurt.“I’m glad it didn’t fall onto somebody as they were falling down the street,” Bensinger said. The next storm is headed to San Diego County on Wednesday. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The gradual reopening of San Diego beaches continues the week of June 8. Parking lots are next on the list to reopen.Starting Monday, June 8, park and water use are open at East and West Mission Bay Parks with no restrictions. Mission Bay parking lots are open. Fiesta Island is open to pedestrians, dogs and cyclists as of June 8 but will not open for cars until July 6.Starting Tuesday, June 9, all San Diego piers and boardwalks are open. Plus, San Diego beach parking lots are open with no restrictions.Friday, June 12, Balboa Park Central Mesa opens, along with Balboa Park parking lots.While beaches are officially open for both active and passive activities, social distancing should still be practiced, meaning people should only sit near people who they live with. Sporting activities like football and volleyball are not allowed on beaches yet.There are nine permanent lifeguard stations in the San Diego Area, including Ocean Beach, South Mission Beach, Mission Beach, North Pacific Beach, Pacific Beach, Children's Pool, La Jolla Cove, La Jolla Shores and Black's Beach. 1117
