BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers executed the second largest methamphetamine bust recently along the southwest borders in CBP's history, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.A press release states that a driver of a tractor-trailer with a "shipment that was manifested as medical supplies," pulled up to the Otay Mesa cargo border in San Diego Friday morning. An agent there at the time decided to pull the truck over for a more thorough inspection. Imagining systems, similar to an x-ray, were used to investigate the trailer and revealed suspicious components in the back of the trailer.Officers offloaded more than 1,800 packages mixed with medical supplies. That's when they discovered more than 3,100 pounds of methamphetamine, 64 pounds of heroin, 29 pounds of fentanyl powder, and almost 37 pounds of fentanyl pills. The narcotics are estimated to have a street value of .2 million, according to the press release.“This massive seizure is a testament of what law enforcement agencies can do when we combine forces – prevent over million worth of deadly drugs from entering our country; thus saving countless lives from addiction and overdose deaths,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge John W. AstraZeneca is the latest drugmaker to announce promising Phase 3 trial results from its COVID-19 vaccine candidate.On Monday, AstraZeneca said its two-shot vaccine candidate has been 90% effective thus far along with no safety concerns.“These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives," said Professor Andrew Pollard, the chief executive of the study. Excitingly, we’ve found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90% effective and if this dosing regime is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply. Today’s announcement is only possible thanks to the many volunteers in our trial, and the hard working and talented team of researchers based around the world.”The company added in its press release that its vaccine candidate offers two distinct advantages over vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna — it's cheaper to produce, and does not need to be stored in ultra-cold conditions before use.AstraZeneca added that the company would "immediately" prepare regulatory paperwork to seek Emergency Use Listing status from the World Health Organization.AstraZeneca is just the latest drug company to report encouraging results from its COVID-19 vaccine candidate.Last week, Pfizer said it had submitted Emergency Use Authorization paperwork to the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) after a final analysis of its vaccine candidate proved to be 95% effective in preventing COVID-19. The FDA is expected to approve the drug in the coming weeks.Moderna has also said that early results show its vaccine candidate to be 95% effective, and is on track to have the drug approved for Emergency Use Authorization by the end of the year.AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna are all shattering records for vaccine development. AURORA, Colo – A man is giving a family a piece of their hero back after finding World War II dog tags on a job site he was working on.“They’re going into the mail today,” Michael Huber said in his office, surrounding by old photos and knick-knacks packed away in a box.Huber has all the respect in the world for a man he’s never met, but came across his name in the dirt.“Well, I was excavating on my jobsite,” Huber said. “I was getting rid of some trash and debris from years ago, and I pulled out a bucket and there was something shiny sticking out. I saw what it was and it was dog tags.”The name Gail Sheldon was engraved on the tags.“It said he got his shot in 1943,” Huber said. “Amazing. World War II dog tags.”Doing a little research, Huber found out who Sheldon was.“He was a captain and flew B-24 bomber planes,” Huber said. “He had several missions over Berlin, and he flew during D-Day. He was even shot down one time.”Huber was able to get into contact with Sheldon’s family after a couple of months. He found out from the family Sheldon died in 1990.Huber is now sending back the dog tags along with Sheldon’s pilot wings that he found with the tags. He packs up a box filled with old coke bottles and old squirt guns from that time that he found on the job site.“It could possibly be his family’s,” Huber said.Huber, who has also served in the U.S. Army, said he deeply respects Sheldon. Which is why it's important to send this memento back to the family.“Dog tags to me is part of a person’s being,” Huber said. “It’s a symbol of them giving up everything.” 1584

At a time when people across the country are calling to defund the police, or outright abolish them, convincing others to make a career in law enforcement could be a tough sell.For Cameron Mosher, however, the decision to put on the badge for a living is an easy one.“For me, it’s always been an urge to serve my community,” he said.Mosher is training to be a deputy sheriff at the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy in Southern California.“I want to try to be that positive change in law enforcement to try to help and move forward with this career,” he said.Moving forward and maintaining order as the country deals with a pandemic and social unrest.“I have a brother in St. Louis, Missouri, not too far from Ferguson, and we’ve had some interesting debates over the last five or so years,” said Lt. Joses Walehwa, who is helping train a new group of recruits at the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy.Walehwa says his team is preparing the next generation of law enforcement officer for much more than traffic stops and arrests.“As an African American, or really any minority group here in America, has a unique perspective when it comes to just their lived experience growing up,” he said. “I think for me, the biggest impact is bridging the gap. You know, bridging this issue of us versus them.”Walehwa says another huge impact when it comes to recruiting is the economy.“When the economy starts to dip, you see that people start to look for stable jobs,” he said. “Law enforcement and public sector and jobs like ours become a little bit more appealing because people see the stability of the job.”A job where despite a pension and a mean annual wage of more ,600 (Bureau of Labor Statistics), there’s still a major need for more sheriff’s deputies across the country.A recent report from the Police Executive Research Forum shows 36% of respondents said the number of applicants at their agency has “decreased significantly.”For recruits like Mosher, however, working in law enforcement means much more than money. It’s about building trust in his community while also addressing new challenges and raising the standards of law enforcement officers.“We see definitely a lot of people who are not necessarily supportive of law enforcement right now,” he said. “But in the end, that’s totally OK, because we’re here to support everyone.
