BALTIMORE, Md. – In looking for creative inspiration, engineering student Qiyuan Fu finds it in a box, with an interesting occupant. Inside: a real, live snake. “We can definitely learn something from them,” Fu said. The snake is a Kingsnake, which is native to deserts in California and Mexico and serves as the model for a new robot, developed in a mechanical engineering lab at Johns Hopkins University. “We added this one directional wheel, so it can only rotate in one direction,” said Fu, as he demonstrated how the robot moves. The “snake robot,” and its colleague, the “roach robot,” are so-called “bio-inspired robots” – taking their cues from mother nature. “We studied snakes here because they are exceptionally good at moving through almost any terrain,” said Johns Hopkins assistant professor Chen Li. Li said it’s an idea with practical applications: the robots could potentially help in search and rescue, by making their way through tight spaces to find people trapped in rubble. “People have actually tried to build snake robots for several decades,” he said. In the past, though, the robots fell short once they left the lab environments, unable to make it through different types of terrain. This time – using specially positioned cameras – they’ve observed how the snakes and roaches move across different surfaces and attempted to mimic what nature already does so well. “What's really unique about our work is that we focus on understanding the physical principles – starting by looking at animals,” Li said. “And then by understanding such principles, we can apply them to the to the robot.” The snakes have 200 vertebrae; the snake robot has 20 segments. It’s progress, these engineers say, with more to go. “There’s still going to be a lot of challenges ahead,” Li said.The engineering lab is now looking into modeling robots based on lizards. That’s because of their ability to leap across surfaces, which could further help robots make their way across uneven terrain. 2008

On Thursday, the United States Air Force Academy announced that President Trump nominated Lt. General Richard M. Clark to become the Academy's first Black superintendent. According to the U.S. Air Force Academy, if the Senate confirms Lt. Gen. Clark's nomination, he will become the second Black general to head up a service academy. He will be in charge of the Academy's undergraduate academic program, cadet military, and athletic training and character development.“I am extremely humbled and honored by the nomination to serve as the Superintendent of the Air Force Academy,” said Lt. Gen. Clark. “I’m also excited for the opportunity to build on the tremendous work of Lt. Gen. [Jay] Silveria and to give back to the institution that has given me so much. A nail salon in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is rushing to defend itself after an assault at its store went viral.Grace Nguyen, an employee at Hollywood Nails of Brookside said the nail salon was just following standard coronavirus safety restrictions when it required a complaining customer to wear a mask inside.The woman took to Facebook and wrote that the nail salon made her leave after she explained she’s exempt from wearing a face mask due to a medical condition.Nguyen said they offered the woman a face shield instead, and she responded by saying, “They don’t work.” Nguyen also tells 2 Works For You, the salon offered to see the woman after hours for an appointment, without a face mask, and she refused.This article was written by Mason Mauro for KJRH. 774

A woman in Maricopa, Arizona, has been arrested, accused of physical abuse against her seven adoptive children. Maricopa police say that on March 13, an adult woman came to their department and said her mother, 48-year-old Machelle Hackney, had been abusing her siblings.According to a police report, she said the siblings were left in locked closets for days at a time, pepper sprayed and left with no food or water for days on end by their adoptive mother.Police went to the home and allegedly found a child in a closet wearing a pull-up diaper and no other clothing. The closet had a lock on it, but it was not locked at the time. Police say they children appeared pale, underweight and had bags under their eyes. One of the children told police they were pepper sprayed numerous times as punishment by his mother, among other physical abuse. "I either get beat with a hanger or belt, or a brush, or get pepper sprayed from head to toe.” The others described similar abuse, including abuse to their private parts and being forced to take ice baths. Police also say the children were also forced to participate and “act” in a popular YouTube series that Hackney filmed in their home. Several of the children said if they forgot lines, or tried not to participate, they would be physically abused as punishment. Police interviewed one of Hackney’s adult sons. Logan Hackney said he and his brother Ryan discussed reporting the abuse, but never did. Logan allegedly admitted to knowing about the physical abuse, and said they would sneak the children food when possible. When questioned, Machelle Hackney "denied the pepper spray, denied the ice baths and stated the only forms of punishment she uses is having to stand in the corner, getting spankings and being grounded,” according to police paperwork. Logan Hackney and Ryan Hackney were booked into Pinal County Jail for seven counts each of failing to report abuse of a minor. Machelle was booked into Pinal County Jail for two counts of molestation of a child, seven counts of child abuse, five counts of unlawful imprisonment and five counts of child neglect. 2131
