SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - May is Maritime Month in San Diego and the best chance to learn all about San Diego Bay's regional importance for free!The Port of San Diego will offer free tours as part of its annual Maritime Month celebration. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In response to a rise in coronavirus cases among San Diego State students, the campus said Wednesday it will move all its classes online for the next month.The school says it has recorded 64 confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases in students since the start of fall classes on Aug. 24, but that doesn't mean there is an outbreak on campus. Many of the cases have come from students living off-campus. The school says 15 cases out of 7,997 on-campus students have been reported since the start of the semester.A little more than 100 students are currently quarantined out of an abundance of caution, said Andrea Dooley, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs.One of the positive cases arrived in San Diego from out of state, according to County Medical Director Dr. Eric McDonald. McDonald said there is one off-campus gathering under investigation as to whether it meets the "outbreak" designation.RELATED: San Diego State fraternities ban social events this fall due to COVID-19In response to the growing number of students testing positive, SDSU moved all classes online for the next four weeks. The campus had been hosting about 200 classes in-person, many of which were lab classes that were determined to only be possible in person.Starting Sept. 3, all athletic events have also been paused for two weeks."We understand there may be some frustration with this decision ... the shift to the virtual space does not impact our students who are living on campus," said Luke Wood, Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. Indoor access to the campus' library will also be restricted, but outdoor seating will remain open.Wood added that the rise in cases among students is expected when people from different backgrounds and locations are coming together."SDSU has been proactively prepared for this, really since, the spring and all through the summer with the onset of the pandemic," Wood said.RELATED: SDSU begins 2020-21 school year with mostly virtual classesWhen the school becomes aware that a student resident has tested positive or is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, an Assessment and Response Team is used to isolate the sick student and, if needed, close contacts are notified.Several campus apartments have been designated for isolating students when needed. For those isolated, a hygiene kit and food and meal delivery are provided by SDSU to those isolated students, Wood says.To address off-campus students testing positive, the school had banned fraternity events and instituted several policies to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Those policies include hiring security to patrol the campus after hours, document violations, and report to staff who handle disciplinary action. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It's Signing Day for Lincoln High School seniors.In a first-ever ceremony for the school, college-bound seniors were honored for their hard work and accomplishments on campus Tuesday."It is to inspire underclassmen to aspire towards greatness like their senior counterparts," ASB advisor Malykke Bacon said in an email. Diggs wants to return to San Diego after attending UC Davis to be a future pediatrician."We have many students doing the right thing every day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's a challenge chickens around the world hope you don't attempt.A Rancho Bernardo man has set a new record for eating Chick-fil-A the most consecutive days in a row — barring the company's usual Sunday closure.Even before the challenge, Mark Mendenhall was a regular at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Chick-Fil-A, with employees dubbing him "Mayor of Chick-fil-A.""I have eaten everything on the menu, except the coffee and tea, I don't like coffee or tea, I've had every sauce," said Mendenhall.RELATED: Chula Vista Chick-fil-A employee saves man's lifeBy day he's a realtor, by dinner he's Mayor. "The food is great don't get me wrong, but it's the people here that make you feel good!" Mendenhall says.Several months ago, he heard about a Georgia man successfully eating Chick-fil-A 100 days in a row, excluding days when the restaurant is closed. "I thought to myself, I could do that! "My dear wife asked me, when is all of this going to end?!" Mendenhall laughs.He decided he'd end the challenge when they went on vacation, so his wife promptly planned one to Palm Springs. Throughout the journey, Mark took a picture each day with employees, friends, and strangers, proof of his amazing streak.But his mission had another cause. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s approaching one year since a San Diego Navy Sailor was hurt in an explosion while on deployment, leaving him paralyzed.Saturday, community members rallied together to support wounded sailor, Kenton Stacy, on his journey to recovery. Hundreds of people gathered in Liberty Station for the Stacy Strong 5k.“We feel very blessed,” says Kenton Stacy’s wife, Lindsey. “All the love and support we’ve seen over the last year just has been amazing.”The event had live music, a silent auction, and awards for race winners. During this time last year, the Navy EOD tech was deployed in Afghanistan when an IED exploded while he was clearing out a hospital. The explosion left him paralyzed from the neck down.“It’s definitely been a very hard year… There’s been highs, there’s been lows,” says Lindsey Stacy. Her husband has not made it home from the hospital just yet but, today he was transported and joined family and friends at the event.“I just think he feels so blessed," she added.The funds for the event will go to the EOD warrior foundation. The organization provides financial assistance and resources to wounded active duty service members and veterans. Stacy’s “Alive Day” anniversary is November 9.  1270
