Pharmacy chains CVS and Walgreens announced on Monday that they have started administering coronavirus vaccines to those living and working in assisted living facilities. The announcement comes on the same day Modern’s coronavirus vaccine began being administered throughout the US. Moderna’s vaccine was the second to receive an emergency use authorization from the FDA. Last week, Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine began being administered nationwide."Today's rollout is the culmination of months of internal planning and demonstrates how the private sector can use its expertise to help solve some of our most critical challenges," said Larry J. Merlo, President and Chief Executive Officer, CVS Health. "I'm grateful for the herculean efforts of everyone involved, including our health care professionals who will be deployed throughout the country to bring peace of mind to long-term care facility residents, staff, and their loved ones."Pharmacy chain Walgreens said last week that it will be working with 35,000 assisted care facilities throughout the US in the coming weeks and months in administering the coronavirus vaccine. Last week, CVS announced plans to vaccinate those working or living in 40,000 assisted living facilities.Walgreens expects to vaccinate 3 million residents and staff at facilities throughout the US. CVS did not announced how many people they expect to vaccinate through the program.Walgreens said it will be administering coronavirus vaccines to residents and staff at 800 facilities spread across 12 US states this week.CVS and Walgreens are expected at some point to administer the coronavirus vaccine to the general public, but when is still a major question. Currently, a limited number of vaccines are making their way to health care workers and those living and working in assisted living facilities.President-elect Joe Biden said his administration’s goal is to have 100 million Americans vaccinated by the end of April, but that figure represents less than one third of the US population.“Walgreens is very proud to be a part of this historic milestone to begin administering Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine to our most vulnerable populations,” said John Standley, president, Walgreens. “With more than a decade of experience administering various vaccines, we have the deep expertise to support this unprecedented effort to allow our nation to emerge from this pandemic.” 2411

OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A housing development going up in the South Bay could be giving San Diego renters a better chance to become homeowners. That's because the attached homes that comprise the Playa del Sol master plan community in Otay Mesa start from the high 0,000s, which is just above the median price for the area. "This is an opportunity for the first-time home buyer," said Jimmy Ayala, division president for Pardee Homes, which is developing the community. The development, with some phases already complete, will ultimately grow to 800 units, all with two or more bedrooms. It's located just north of the 905 freeway at Caliente Road. RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Key saving steps helped renter buy her first homeAyala says the market has cooled in the last two years, and lower interest rates have helped turn renters into buyers. He says Pardee has its own mortgage company, so it is able to work with buyers who may not have a large amount of cash for a down payment. Ayala says typical monthly payments range between ,600 and ,200 a month, and most people put 5 to 10 percent down. "In this general vicinity, there's about 2,000 homes that are currently being rented and we draw from those folks who are cash flowing, so to speak, on a monthly basis but don't always have a down payment for a home," Ayala said. RELATED: Making It In San Diego: How housing got so expensiveAyala said currently there are two units available in the high 0,000s but that most are on the market 0,000s. The HOA fees for the complex run about 5 per month. Heather Evans, who is paying ,200 a month for her daughter to rent a room near Mesa College, said several of her relatives feel buying is out of reach. "I'd love to see her be a homeowner someday but I have nieces in the area, early 30s, that are renting," she said, adding her niece and her nieces husband pay ,000 a month for a one-bedroom apartment. Ayala said the homes are priced to market. The properties Pardee is selling in East County are available for 0,000 to 0,000, while those in Coastal North County are on the market for million to .5 million. Need more help? The San Diego Housing Coalition and San Diego County have resources to help first-time home buyers. 2272

POINT LOMA, Calif. (KGTV) — Some residents in Point Loma are frustrated that they are being forced to remove their family-owned docks off Shelter Island. The mandate is part of the Port of San Diego's new Port Master Plan. Cameron Driscoll Lilley says her family's dock near Scott St and Bessemer Street is more than just an heirloom, it's significant piece of history in the community."This dock was put in by my great grandfather in 1943, and it was completed in 1944," Lilley said. Since then, her family has shared their dock with the public from sunrise to sunset. The deepest end portion of the pier is locked for safety reasons. She said this is an expensive endeavor but well worth the smiles it provides to visitors. "The insurance, maintenance, the upkeep, and the liability that we are exposed to. But it's worth it because it provides an opportunity for people in this community and beyond to interact with the waterfront in a way that they wouldn't get to do," Lilley said. Lilley said there are people from all over San Diego who enjoy walking on their dock to watch the fish and stingrays swim under their feet. But the Port of San Diego says their dock is not technically docked on their residential land, and because of that, it must come down. "They want to tear out a piece of our historical landscape," Lilley said. According to the California Coastal Commission rules, it cannot allow residential uses on land the agency governs. Lilley's only other choice is to make the dock available for the public 24/7. But she sees that as a safety hazard."The most tragic thing would be if somebody was out on the end and fell and or drowned or got hurt in a boating accident off of the pier," Lilley said. The Master Plan has no mention of hiring lifeguards if it becomes public."I think they are driving an agenda of tourism and revenue and of course San Diego needs that. But I am disappointed that the Port Master Plan hasn't prioritized the residents of this neighborhood," Lilley said. The Port of San Diego is welcoming all comments at their next Community Discussion. It will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, at 5:30 pm at Portuguese Hall.  2217

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — For a summer treat, it doesn’t get much cooler than -320 degrees. That’s how cold liquid nitrogen is when it transforms cereal into "Dragon’s Breath."“The vapor coming out of your mouth is a nice effect," said Ron Daranty, who owns Subzero Nitrogen Ice Cream in Parkland. However, a mom in St. Augustine is warning parents of children with asthma about the fad food after her son experienced health issues from eating Dragon's Breath.“We’ve sold thousands of them since January and we never had any issue," Daranty said.Subzero employees in Parkland have always warned people to be careful with the very cold cup and avoid drinking any excess liquid nitrogen, Daranty said. But now they've added on a new disclaimer."Even though that lady was sharing the article for others that may have respiratory challenges, I thought it was great and we added it to our sign of caution. We also started making people aware of it," he said. The risk of ingesting liquid nitrogen is purely scientific. Chris Pait, of the South Florida Science Center in Palm Beach County, said the extremely cold temperature can give people frostbite in their mouth or lungs."It can evaporate away in your mouth, but if you breathe that cold air in, there’s a chance that it’s cold enough to freeze the water that’s in your lungs," Pait said. "Your lungs are a mucous membrane. They need to be moist to work the way they should, so if you freeze your lungs obviously that isn’t a good thing. That’s going to cause problems. It’s almost like frostbite internally rather than externally."That’s why the science center shows off the power of liquid nitrogen in a controlled demonstration where professionals use gloves and goggles while handling liquid nitrogen. They show children how it can freeze a balloon, send a plug flying off a beaker, and, of course, make ice cream. But they serve that ice cream in a way that's safe. “When we do ice cream, the nitrogen is just there to freeze the liquid into the more solid form so by the time they eat it, the nitrogen is gone, it’s evaporated away," Pait said.Daranty said employees are specially trained on how to handle liquid nitrogen. People who don't want to try Dragon's Breath can still enjoy regular ice cream Subzero makes using liquid nitrogen."We’re pretty cautious about it. We understand the risks with it. Corporate has standard operating procedures and we’re pretty cautious. Everyone here knows how to handle the nitrogen. 2503

Police say one person was fatally shot in Portland, Oregon, as Black Lives Matter protesters and people from a large caravan of President Donald Trump supporters clashed in the streets. It wasn’t clear if the shooting Saturday night was linked to fights that broke out as a caravan of about 600 vehicles was confronted by protesters in the city’s downtown. Police say the caravan had left the area about 15 minutes before gunshots rang out. Oregon’s largest city has been the site of nightly protests for three months since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Trump referenced the city in a speech Thursday at the Republican National Convention. 668
