President Donald Trump does not like the news that General Motors would close several plants and cut more than 10,000 jobs. Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn on Monday afternoon, Trump said he spoke with CEO Mary Barra and told her he wasn't happy with the decision."I told her I'm not happy about it," Trump told reporters."The United States saved General Motors and for her to take that company out of Ohio is not good," he continued. "I think she's going to put something back in soon."On Monday, GM announced it would close four US-based plants, including two in metro Detroit; the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant and the Warren Transmission Operations plant.According to a spokesperson for GM, the plants will be unallocated which means they will no longer produce vehicles in those plants in 2019. According to the company, the future of the plants will be part of contract talks with the UAW next year.“The actions we are taking today continue our transformation to be highly agile, resilient and profitable, while giving us the flexibility to invest in the future,” Barra said in a release. “We recognize the need to stay in front of changing market conditions and customer preferences to position our company for long-term success.”According to the release, GM will lay off 14,700 factory and white-collar workers. Of those, 8,100 will be white-collar workers that will either take buyouts or be laid off.The company said that the moves will help continue its focus on crossovers, SUVs and trucks. With the move, GM plans to cut 25 percent of the executive staff and 15 percent of the salaried and salaried contract staff. The transition also includes ceasing production of six vehicles; the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt and Impala, the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac XTS sedan and Cadillac CT6 sedan. According to the company, the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant produces the Volt, Impala, LaCrosse and CT6.Trump said Barra told him the Cruze isn't selling well."Hopefully she’s going to come back and put something, but I told her I’m not happy about it," he added.Barra also was meeting with White House Economic Adviser Larry Kudlow on Monday, a White House official confirms. The meeting has apparently been on the books for weeks and it's just a coincidence that the meeting and the announcement happened on the same day. 2369

President Donald Trump has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize by a Norwegian member of parliament known for his views against immigration, Fox News, The Independent and The Daily Beast report.According to Fox News, Trump was nominated for the prize by Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a member of the Norwegian Parliament, for his work in attempting to bring peace between Israel and the United Arab Emirates."For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees," Tybring-Gjedde said during an interview on Fox News. While the number of Nobel Peace Prize nominees varies from year to year, more than 300 people and organizations are nominated for the 2020 prize. Trump himself was nominated for the prize in 2018 for organizing a summit with North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un. Tybring-Gjedde was among those who also submitted that nomination.According to The Daily Beast, Tybring-Gjedde is staunchly against immigration and is known for making controversial statements about Muslims. He's previously compared hijabs, the face coverings worn by Muslim women, to robes worn by KKK members.Israel and the UAE agreed to normalize relations on Aug. 13. Later that month, Trump adviser Jared Kushner joined Israeli and UAE officials aboard a plane that marked the first commercial flight between the countries. While normalizing relations was a significant step for the countries, significant questions about the deal remain — particularly, the UAE's ongoing relationship with Palestine.Four previous presidents — Barack Obama, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter — have been granted the Nobel Peace Prize.Trump has publicly campaigned for the award in the past. At a rally in Toledo earlier this year, Trump insinuated that he deserved the award. 1830

Pope Francis has declared that the death penalty is never admissible and that the Catholic Church will work towards its abolition around the world, the Vatican formally announced Thursday. The change, which has been added to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, makes official a position that the Pope has articulated since he became pontiff. The Church now teaches that "the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person" and states that it will "work with determination towards its abolition worldwide," the Vatican said. The Catholic Church's teaching on the death penalty has been slowly evolving since the time of Pope John Paul II, who served from 1978 to 2005.In his Christmas message in 1998, he wished "the world the consensus concerning the need for urgent and adequate measures ... to end the death penalty."His successor Benedict XVI, in a document published in November 2011, called on society's leaders "to make every effort to eliminate the death penalty."Francis then wrote in a letter to the President of the International Commission Against the Death Penalty in March 2015 that "today capital punishment is unacceptable, however serious the condemned's crime may have been."He added that the death penalty "entails cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment" and said it was to be rejected "due to the defective selectivity of the criminal justice system and in the face of the possibility of judicial error."Vatican spokesman Greg Burke told CNN that the change was important but should not come as a surprise."It was expected for a long time starting with John Paul II," he said. "He had a document, the Gospel of Life, in which he said it is essentially the conditions with which were once considered okay for allowing the death penalty, have basically disappeared."The key point here is really human dignity, the Pope is saying that no matter how grievous the crime, someone never loses his or her human dignity. One of the rationales for the death penalty in Catholic teachings historically was to protect society."Obviously, the state still has that obligation, that is not being taken away here, but they can do that in other ways." 2215

Pope Francis has removed Bishop Martin Holley of Memphis, Tennessee, the Vatican announced on Wednesday.Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville will run the diocese in Holley's absence, the Vatican said.In a statement, the Diocese of Memphis said Holley's removal follows an "apostolic visitation" -- churchspeak for a Vatican-led investigation -- in June 2018. The diocese also said there had been "several efforts to restore peace and serenity," which apparently failed. In a statement, Kurtz said: "I am eager to work with the priests, curia, and faithful of the Diocese of Memphis to promote stability, peace, and healing until Pope Francis appoints a new bishop."The archbishop continued, "I ask for prayers for Bishop Martin Holley as he departs from this local church and for the entire Church of Memphis. Let us pray for one another during this time of transition." 878

PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon Gov. Kate Brown says she has asked law enforcement leaders to review “any alleged incidents” involving their officers during a protest in Portland late Saturday into early Sunday. The governor said in a series of tweets Sunday evening that she's committed to building trust in the community.Officers were criticized online over the weekend after a news photographer was seen on video being pushed to the ground by an officer."Free speech and free press are two of my core values. I take the use of physical force by law enforcement officers seriously, whether it involves members of the public or the media," Brown said. "Journalists and law enforcement officers have difficult jobs to do during these demonstrations, but I do still believe that we can protect free speech and keep the peace." 824
