Three Gulf Coast states were placed under a Tropical Storm Warning on Friday as Tropical Storm Cristobal is setting its sights for the US late Sunday. According the National Hurricane Center, Cristobal is a minimal tropical storm along the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico with top winds of 40 MPH. The slow-moving storm has dumped heavy rain over the Yucatan Peninsula this week.After stalling out over the Yucatan Peninsula, the National Hurricane Center projects the storm will move across the Gulf of Mexico this weekend before coming ashore late Sunday. Parts of the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama coast are under a Tropical Storm Watch.The Atlantic Hurricane Season is off to its most active start in recorded history. Cristobal is already the third named storm of 2020. No other hurricane season has had three named storms this early in the year. Most major projections are calling for an abnormally busy hurricane season in the Atlantic. The storm is forecast to remain a tropical storm through landfall, although the National Hurricane Center expects Cristobal to strengthen into a strong tropical storm by landfall. Among the locations under a Tropical Storm Warning is New Orleans, which is one of the most susceptible cities to flooding in the US. Louisiana Gov. The Pentagon has sent a legislative proposal to Congress calling for the establishment of a Space Force within the United States military, a top defense priority for the Trump administration, senior defense officials said Friday.If authorized by Congress, the proposal would allow for the creation of a sixth service of the military alongside the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Initially the Space Force would fall under the Department of the Air Force, in much the same way the Marine Corps are formally part of the Navy.The Secretary of the Air Force would be responsible for organizing, training and equipping two distinct military services, but the new Space Force would have a four-star chief of staff who would serve as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a newly created Under Secretary of Space would provide oversight of the civilian component of the new service.The proposal was submitted to Congress on Wednesday night, and initially makes a request for 200 people and million from the 2020 fiscal year budget to establish a headquarters for the Space Force. Most of the staffing to formally stand up the new service would initially come from the Air Force, with the goal of transitioning personnel from other military branches as the service takes shape over the coming years."This is an historic moment for our nation," Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said in a written statement Friday. He immediately began formulating plans to stage a parade of his own, though cost estimates later caused him to reduce his aspirations to the speech and military pageant that will be seen Thursday.Through it all, Trump has taken enormous interest in even the smallest details, from the staging to the military equipment on display.It's those details that are likely to ratchet up the costs of the event, though the massive fireworks display that will cap the evening has been donated.Already, the National Park Service is redirecting nearly .5 million to help cover costs related to the July 4 extravaganza, according to The Washington Post, money that the paper says is usually "primarily intended to improve parks across the country."It's not clear how much the event will cost altogether, though Trump attempted to downplay the amount on Wednesday."The cost of our great Salute to America tomorrow will be very little compared to what it is worth," he wrote on Twitter. The State Department ordered Wednesday the departure of non-emergency US government employees from Iraq amid increasing tensions with Iran and warned US citizens not to travel to the country, citing a "high risk for violence and kidnapping."The department said in a statement that employees working in the US embassy in Baghdad and the US consulate in Erbil were instructed to leave Iraq, and that "normal visa services will be temporarily suspended at both posts."It added that American Citizens Services employees who were working in the embassy in Baghdad "will continue to provide consular services to U.S. citizens in Basrah."The department said the sudden changes were because the US government's "ability to provide routine and emergency services to US citizens in Iraq is extremely limited" and that as a result, the threat of "terrorism, kidnapping, and armed conflict" aimed at Americans in the country was too great a risk.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made an unannounced visit to Iraq last week amid escalating tensions with Iran.While there, Pompeo said he spoke to Iraqi officials "about the importance of Iraq ensuring that it's able to adequately protect Americans in their country."US officials have told CNN the US had "specific and credible" intelligence that suggested Iranian forces and proxies were planning to target US forces in locations including Iraq.
