LONG BEACH (CNS) - For thousands of years, millions of tiny white abalone snails lived along the California coast.Now facing extinction, the white abalone will be getting a major boost toward survival this month, thanks to a breeding program spearheaded by marine organizations across the state, including the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.In mid-November, researchers from the aquarium, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, the Bay Foundation, Paua Marine Research Group and state Department of Fish and Wildlife will be releasing white abalone into the wild at a series of undisclosed locations across Southern California.RELATED: Dog swept out to sea rescued, owner asks for more signage"This is a historic moment, as a species once on the brink of extinction may finally have a chance to rebound," said Sandy Trautwein, vice president of animal husbandry at Aquarium of the Pacific. "This is important not just for white abalone, but for the entire marine ecosystem off Southern California."Researchers are withholding the locations of the planned releases, hoping to give the white abalone the best chance at successfully settling into their new homes. The white abalone were actually placed underwater at their release locations last month, but they remain inside holding boxes."Natural recovery is not occurring fast enough or at all for this species to rebound on its own," said Melissa Neuman of the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Services' Abalone Recovery Program. LOS ANGELES, (KGTV) – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives announced that the agency is offering ,000 for information on the whereabouts of stolen firearms believed to be in San Diego.Authorities with the bureau say 18 firearms were stolen from Turner’s Outdoorsman in the early morning hours of May 1.Officials added that one person is already in custody for the theft, but that ATF is asking for help identifying the location of the guns.“Firearms theft from licensed gun dealers is one of the top priorities for ATF,” said McMullan. “Experience shows these guns will likely end up being used in a crime. These guns in the hands of criminals endanger everyone’s safety. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Four people were wounded, one fatally, when gunfire erupted Tuesday morning at a large party taking place at a mansion north of Beverly Hills where police had earlier responded to multiple calls of disturbing the peace.Firefighters and paramedics sent to the 13200 block of Mulholland Drive about 12:45 a.m. located three adults who had been wounded, and they were treated at the scene, then taken to a hospital, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department. A fourth person was found nearby with an injury to his wrist, Prange said, adding the victim's injury was not caused by gunfire.One shooting victim was hospitalized in grave condition and the other two were hospitalized in critical condition, Prange said.A woman about 35 years of age died at a hospital, said Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Chris Ramirez. Information was not immediately available on her identity.Ramirez said the other two shooting victims found at the scene were males, and they were displaying stable vital signs Tuesday morning.A woman who also had been shot went to a hospital in a private vehicle, and was in stable condition, Ramirez said.Ramirez said the crime apparently was gang-related, and no arrests have been reported. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A much-debated gas tax hike billed as raising billions of dollars a year for statewide transportation improvements will remain in place, with voters rejecting a ballot measure that would have repealed the increase.Proposition 6 would have repealed the hikes that took effect in November 2017, raising the tax by 12 cents per gallon for gasoline and 20 cents per gallon for diesel fuel. The increases included in Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair & Accountability Act of 2017, are projected to raise .2 billion a year, with the money earmarked for road and bridge repairs.Gas tax opponents gathered more than 640,000 petition signatures across the state in an initiative drive to put the repeal effort on the ballot.
