Who caught a glimpse of #FLPD’s newest mate hoping through our community this morning? FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Florida is bracing for more impacts from Tropical Storm Eta, which has already brought heavy rains and flooded city streets in the state.Officials shut down public transportation and ordered some evacuations Sunday.Even if the storm doesn’t strengthen into a hurricane, its slow speed and heavy rains posed an enormous threat to an area already drenched from more than 14 inches of rain last month. Eta could dump an additional 6 to 12 inches. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a morning update that life-threatening flash flooding will be possible across inundated urban areas of southeast Florida on Monday.NHC Director Ken Graham provided a briefing on Tropical Storm #Eta shortly after the release of the 7 am EST intermediate advisory.Watch on Facebook here: https://t.co/sOzOFRHpgP pic.twitter.com/S01xl343Mf— National Hurricane Center (@NHC_Atlantic) November 9, 2020 The NHC says radar estimates show over a foot of rain has fallen over the past two days in some areas of South Florida.“Flash and urban flooding will also be possible for Cuba, Jamaica, the Bahamas and the remainder of southern Florida, along with potential minor river flooding in central Florida,” the NHC said. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph Sunday night and made landfall on Lower Matecumbe Key around 11 p.m. The NHC says Eta could approach Florida’s Gulf Coast later this week as a tropical storm and possibly bring impacts from rain, wind and storm surge. The system has already left scores dead and over 100 missing in Mexico and Central America.Watch NHC Director Ken Graham discuss the latest on Eta Monday morning: 1656

Florida gunman Nikolas Cruz is willing to plead guilty to avoid the death penalty and spare the community from reliving the massacre in a trial, his public defender said.Cruz, 19, faces charges of premeditated murder in Wednesday's shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, which left 17 people dead.Broward County Public Defender Howard Finkelstein, who is representing the confessed gunman, said there's no question he killed the 14 students and three staff members."The only question is, does he live or does he die?" Finkelstein asked.Prosecutors would need to agree not to ask for capital punishment and allow life without parole instead. On Saturday, State Attorney Michael J. Satz said this "certainly is the type of case the death penalty was designed for," but that now is the time "to let the families grieve and bury their children and loved ones.""Our office will announce our formal position at the appropriate time," Satz said.Cruz's next court date is set for Monday morning. He is being held without bond following a video hearing Thursday in a Broward County court. Latest developments 1134

For many millennials, the dream of homeownership was far off. But one of the most unusual yet positive fallouts from the coronavirus pandemic has been some younger adults seeing the value of low-cost living."I'm fortunate to have been able to save during the pandemic," Paige Feingenbaum said. The 34-year-old was able to keep her job during the pandemic."I know have five digits in my bank account," she said. "I just personally never thought that could be possible for me."She's in a much better financial position and able to move forward as a first-time homebuyer. WPTV "I'm able to save so much money by not going to ticketed events, not going to movies, not eating at restaurants, spending so much more time at home," Paige Feingenbaum says. "I'm able to save so much money by not going to ticketed events, not going to movies, not eating at restaurants, spending so much more time at home," she said.Bonnie Heatzig, a South Florida Realtor, said her clients have shared that COVID-19 taught some valuable life lessons."Life under lockdown has definitely changed the financial habits of a lot of millennials. Two out of three millennials are also saying the lockdown had a positive effect on their savings," she said. "In the pre-COVID period, there was a tremendous amount of social pressure on millennials to go to the right restaurants. They memorialized their evenings out on social media. There was this fear of missing out."Now, the value of homeownership is back. Zoom "Life under lockdown has definitely changed the financial habits of a lot of millennials," South Florida real estate agent Bonnie Heatzig says. "Circles back to the importance of loving the space you are in," Heatzig said.Feingenbaum now wonders if she'll be more of a homebody."Which is enabling them to make that down payment," Heatzig said. But it's not necessarily an easy market for buyers."It's a very strong seller's market," she said. "The inventory is very low."Part of that spreads beyond new first-time buyers to "people who are looking to relocate to South Florida from crowded metropolitan areas," Heatzig said. It's a new yet crowded field in the South Florida real estate market. This story was first reported by Tory Dunnan at WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida. 2344
