SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Street racing could return to SDCCU Stadium, after just a couple month's hiatus.RaceLegal, a non-profit that has run drag races in the stadium parking lot for 21 years, says they have new leadership and new funding. They hope to resume racing soon.But, organizers say they're having trouble getting permission from the City of San Diego to use the venue."This is really important for the community," says Lydia Denecochea, RaceLegal's Executive Director. "It saves lives."RaceLegal started in the late 1990s as a response to a rash of street racing crashes and deaths. Denecochea says giving people a safe, controlled environment to race has made the roads safer across the city."It's a human characteristic that we are competitive, and many of us love speed. It'll never go away," she says.The non-profit group joined forces with city leaders, the San Diego Police Department and the San Diego Sheriff to give drivers an alternative. People could even volunteer at events to satisfy community service requirements from traffic tickets.The number of deaths from street racing fell from 16 in 2000 to just two in 2018. Injuries also saw a drastic drop-off in the same time frame, from 39 to only one."It works," says Denecochea. "In 2000, we had carnage on our roads."But a lack of funding led the non-profit to close in early 2019. A message on their website told supporters that the budget deficit, "renders the program not viable to continue service to our community."RELATED: RaceLegal stops drag races after more than two decades in Mission ValleyThey held what many thought would be their final race on March 1.Since then, interest from a private investor has Denecochea looking into holding more races. She's now asking supporters to send a letter to the Mayor's office and to other city leaders urging them to let RaceLegal use SDCCU Stadium again.A spokesperson from the city told 10News they're looking into the issue. In a statement, they said, "The City is in communication with RaceLegal on the potential resumption of legal racing at the stadium. However, concurrently the City is in discussions with other race producers to ensure that legal racing at the stadium continues to provide a safe option for the San Diego community."Councilmember Scott Sherman's office says they've also been in touch with RaceLegal and with the stadium to resolve the issue.One potential roadblock is the pending sale of SDCCU Stadium and the land around it to San Diego State University. In November, voters passed Measure G, which authorized the deal to create an SDSU West campus and build a new stadium for the Aztec football program.Denecochea says she wants the city to let RaceLegal keep racing until construction starts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two San Diego families were devastated when their dogs disappeared. After days of searching, they found out their dogs were adopted by other families at local shelters. “I would give anything to have him back,” says Valeria Mega?a. The Spring Valley family’s poodle mix, Cookie, has been missing since Halloween. “It’s been really hard. Life is not the same without him.”After searching day and night, the family got word Cookie was placed at the El Cajon Animal Shelter. When Mega?a checked, she was told Cookie had already been adopted. A similar situation happened to a family in City Heights. Nora Avila says she was out of town when her dog Mocha, who was staying with a neighbor, got out. By the time she made it to the San Diego Humane Society, he had already been adopted. “We pleaded with them to let the family know… that we loved him. He was never abandoned,” says Avila. The El Cajon Animal Shelter and the San Diego Humane Society have holding periods of four days for animals with no identification. Cookie and Mocha were not microchipped. “One in three pets in their lifetime is missing at some point. That’s why for us again, it is so important that people microchip their pets,” says Jennifer Brehler, with the San Diego Humane Society. Both shelters told 10News they notified the adopters but the new families have decided to not return the animals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Several trailers were set up at El Toyon Park in National City and will become a study site for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial, ran by UC San Diego.Drugmaker Johnson & Johnson is looking to enroll participants worldwide for phase three of its Janssen trial, including here in San Diego.UCSD will recruit the majority of the participants.The trial was scheduled to get underway on October 7th, but UCSD researchers now say they're looking at Friday as a start date."We hope to enroll about 2,000 people in San Diego, the study will be enrolling 60,000 people internationally," said Dr. Susan Little, a UCSD professor of medicine and principal investigator for the trial. "Eight Department of Defense trailers form the basis of our permanent vaccine site, vaccine clinic, in National City."Little said this will be a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to determine the vaccine's safety and efficacy."Does it reduce the frequency of COVID infection overall or the severity of COVID infection among study participants?" she said.Little said there is already a lot of data available from the past."This is the same vaccine vector that has been used for many other infectious diseases like HIV, Zika, Ebola," she said.Although the trial is open to all San Diego County residents who qualify, she said the focus would be on recruiting residents from the South Bay, which is why the clinic was set up in National City, instead of UCSD's La Jolla or Hillcrest locations."Communities of color have been harder hit in the sense they have higher rates of hospitalization, and many of them have higher rates of death, our hope was by placing the vaccine trial in a community that has higher rates of infection we could reach a more highly impacted community," she explained. "Those are populations that we hope will have a greater potential benefit from this vaccine."After concerns were raised over another trial that was later put on hold, UCSD worked with the Chicano Federation to ensure South Bay residents get the information they need to make an informed decision if they want to participate."We are putting safety as paramount for these studies, no study is going forward unless we are confident about the safety of the vaccine," said Little.The Janssen trial will be the third for UCSD to join. The Moderna trial is currently underway, and the AstraZeneca trial is on a national pause. 2430

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A group of San Diegans gathered at Balboa Park to honor the 22 lives lost in the El Paso shooting. A group of San Diegans organized the event held at the park next to Centro Cultural de la Raza, hoping to unite the city and advocate change."It hurts, it's going to take a while, we're not going to forget," Pat Palma said. She has friends and family in Texas and feared for their safety when the shots rang out August 3rd."Tried to locate everybody, it was hard, I finally did. Sunday I was just numb," she said."That person did not go to Walmart asking if you're a Democrat or a Republican or a Trump supporter or not. He went there to shoot brown people," Organizer Jessica Yanez Perez said.The victims range in age from 82-2-years-old.At the vigil, they held a prayer asking for support for the families experiencing grief, lit candles for those lost and had speakers who preached involvement to create change."This is something that touched close to home for a lot of us," Yanez Perez said El Paso and San Diego are the same city. She explained both cities are made up of the same people, "people of Mexican ethnicity, of immigrants, of people who cross the border to work."The organizers hope the crowd touched by the senseless killing can show unity, through more than the color of their skin, "what happens here, what can we do here, to prevent something like that and I think the biggest thing is coming together as a community reminding each other we are one we are San Diego." 1522

(KGTV) - One day after the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and locals in San Diego came together to honor the Notorious RBG.Related: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has diedA couple hundred people came together on the steps of Superior Court of San Diego on Union Street on Saturday night.While a few people shared remarks, mourners gathered with candles and flowers. Many people also wore collars, like RBG. A memorial on the steps of the Superior Court grew, filled with signs, flowers and candles.“It’s shaken some folks and we just want to come together and share our strength because ultimately we believe there is strength in unity,” said Lesa Thode, secretary for Women’s March San Diego.Thode said they wanted to give people a place to grieve and remember RBG together. She added that there will be more memorials in the near future that will be more accommodating for the Jewish community, who are in the middle of Rosh Hashanah. One attendee of the vigil was Felicia Rawlins, co-founder of the group Encinitas for Equality.“Came down here to grieve our loss of RGB and take a moment to really feel the feels before we start taking action,” said Rawlins.Many other attendees echoed the need to process, then use the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg to continue forward with the change she started. 1359
