ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. – Scott Allen Ostrem, the man accused of shooting and killing three people at a Thornton Walmart last week, faces six counts of first-degree murder, 30 counts of attempted first-degree murder and a sentencing enhancer if he’s convicted for the shooting.Ostrem, 47, learned his formal charges at a Monday afternoon hearing in Adams County.Prosecutors charged him with two different counts of first-degree murder for each person he is accused of killing. Three of the counts are first-degree murder after deliberation, while the other three are first-degree murder with extreme indifference.He also faces one count of attempted first-degree murder with extreme indifference for 30 other people who were in the store at the time.The final count against Ostrem is a crime-of-violence sentence enhancer that would apply to the attempted murder charges, District Attorney Dave Young said in court on Monday.Should he be convicted of any of those charges, the sentence enhancer would double any prison and parole time Ostrem faces for each count – from between 8 and 24 years in prison, to between 16 and 48 years in prison for each.The first-degree murder charges are all class 1 felonies in Colorado, meaning Ostrem will face with life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if he’s convicted on any of those counts.Colorado hasn’t executed anyone since 1997, though three inmates remain on death row. Gov. John Hickenlooper has pledged to not execute anyone while he’s in office, but the state will elect a new governor next November.Should Ostrem face and be convicted of a class 1 felony, like first-degree murder, a separate sentencing hearing would be held to determine if prosecutors would seek the death penalty or not – unless he’s deemed mentally incompetent to be executed.Young told Denver7 Monday it was too early to determine if he'd seek the death penalty, but said he'd consult with the victims' families before making a decision. He also added that other charges are still on the table, but that further investigation was needed before any further charges are filed.Ostrem wore a white-and-yellow striped Adams County Jail jumpsuit in court on Monday. His public defender had a request to redact the victim’s names from the criminal complaint granted by the judge. He said nothing other than replying “yes” to the judge when asked if he understood his charges and the proceedings.The judge also set the preliminary hearing and bond hearing in the case for Feb. 5. A motion by Ostrem’s public defender to seal the jail visitation records was not immediately granted, however. The judge gave District Attorney Dave Young 21 days to respond to the motion.Ostrem's sister called The Denver Post after allegedly receiving death threats about her brother, and told them he'd heard voices in his head for years after an LSD trip.“My brother is not this monster. … He is not cold blooded. He hears these voices. Honestly, in my heart, I believe there is only so much a person can take,” Ostrem's sister, Michelle Willoughby, told The Post. “I never thought something like this would happen.”Law enforcement officials told Denver7 last week they were looking into Ostrem's mental health history.Police arrested Ostrem near 72nd Ave. and Federal Thursday morning more than 12 hours after the shooting occurred. An anonymous citizen tip alerted authorities to his presence in the area, police said, though FBI agents also spotted him in the area. Ostrem was arrested just a few blocks from his apartment.The coroner for Adams and Broomfield counties on Thursday identified the three killed in the shooting as 52-year-old Pamela Marques of Denver, 66-year-old Carlos Moreno of Thornton, and 26-year-old Victor Vasquez of Denver.Moreno's family members were again in court Monday, as some of them were Friday. One told Denver7 outside of court that Moreno had gone to the store with his teenage niece that night, and that the two had briefly split up to look for different things when the shooting happened.Ostrem had a history of run-ins with the police—most recently a driving while ability impaired conviction in Wheat Ridge in 2014. Neighbors said he was “weird” and kept to himself. Another neighbor told Denver7 Ostrem came off as rude and unapproachable.“He was on the edge, not friendly, wouldn’t talk to anybody,” said neighbor Teresa Muniz. “You didn’t dare talk to him, because he always looked mad.”Ostrem walked off his roofing job Wednesday morning in Frederick, the company confirmed, but was otherwise a “good worker,” fellow employees said. He also had several failed businesses, and declared bankruptcy in September 2015.The judge stipulated that Ostrem be held without bond pending the preliminary hearing. All across the small town of Octavia, Neb., about two hours north and west of Omaha, residents woke up Wednesday morning to find damage from softball-sized hail the night before.Jennifer Rose says the hail damaged her two vehicles."It started like just raining and you could hear the plunking of the hail," Rose said. "And it started started small, like ping pong-sized, and it kept getting bigger and bigger."Roofer Bryan Underwood says Octavia was pummeled with hail causing damage to roofs, vehicles and siding. The hail was so heavy, some stuck into the ground."I usually travel to the bigger stuff so i can try and help out as much as I can," Underwood said. "It's the beginning of the season. Everyone's like, 'Wow.' And we are, too."Paul Augustyn's turkeys were safe from the hail but their coop couldn't quite weather the storm. Neither could his Lexus."Mainly this car," he said, pointing to the Lexus. "My truck is a little beat up. It broke the back window out. Broke the windshield. ABERDEEN — Amber Pleasant wears a smile on her face while she and her husband Jerome Pleasant read to their daughters Amaya, 3, and Amara, 2. Nine-month-old August sleeps peacefully in her lap.Behind that smile hides a lot of worries and concerns, not only about Amber’s future, but the future of her family.“I have six pairs of eyes watching me. If I start to cry or break down, they’ll start to worry,” she said.Amber has plenty to worry about. A day after her interview with WMAR, she was scheduled to have a bilateral mastectomy. She was diagnosed with breast cancer six months ago at the age of 37, a disease she says runs in her family.“It was a big shock that it would happen to someone this young,” she said. “I mean, you always see it, but you don’t think it will happen to you this young.”Amber says she feels the pressure to be strong, not just for her three youngest children, but also her three older daughters from a previous marriage. She says they don’t often talk about the odds.“We just focus on the positive and the good things and we don’t really think about the negative,” she said.This is not the Pleasant family’s first run-in with cancer. In 2005, Jerome was diagnosed with cancer in his jaw. Doctors had to remove part of his cheek and jaw bone and his teeth. Radiation damaged his right eye and he must now wear an eye patch.His cancer diagnosis came not long after his 18-month-old daughter Talia, from his previous marriage, was also diagnosed with cancer.“Father and daughter were battling cancer at the same time, receiving treatments at the same time and receiving surgeries at one time,” Amber said.Talia died a few years later at the age of 4. A couple of years later, Jerome was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. He was treated only to have it return a couple of years later. In all, Jerome has had more than 20 surgeries since 2005, and the chemo and radiation have caused other disabilities like epilepsy.So when Amber found out she had breast cancer, she says she couldn't believe cancer was hitting their family yet again. All she could think about was her children.“I can’t imagine all six of my children not having their mother and it scares me to think that that could happen,” she said. “So I fight every single day, through every single chemo and through every single procedure.”The medical bills quickly began to pile up. Amber says they log a lot of miles between Baltimore and Bel Air, Maryland, where Jerome and she are treated, respectively. She says the family car barely fits the entire family and has become an unreliable mode of transportation.Amber says they realized pretty quickly that they needed to ask for help.“We don’t want anyone to think that we can’t take care of our children and so that’s why we’ve never asked for help before," she said. "We don’t want anyone to think that we can’t do this and that we can’t provide for them and we can’t take care of them.”She says the Harford County community has stepped up tremendously, especially former high school classmates and teachers. Both she and Jerome say it has been a huge source of support and strength for them, and so has their faith.“Faith is a driving force in my life,” Jerome said. “It motivates me to get up every day.”“We’ve run out of resources so we’re very grateful to the Harford County community that has come forward to help our family because without them, I don’t know what we would be doing right now,” Amber said.Amber’s bilateral mastectomy went well and she’s now recovering. She still has to go through more rounds of chemo and radiation.The Pleasants have started a GoFundMe page to help cover their medical costs.Weichert Realtors, Diana Realty in Bel Air is also adopting the Pleasant family for Christmas. All it takes is one event to potentially spread the coronavirus to hundreds of people, directly or indirectly. That is what played out in August at a wedding reception in Maine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.All told, the CDC identified 177 coronavirus cases and seven fatalities linked to a wedding in Maine.Here is how the CDC explained what took place:On August 8, one day after the wedding, a guest from the wedding began feeling ill with coronavirus symptoms. This person, however, did not get tested for the virus until August 13.Meanwhile, another attendee of the wedding began feeling ill on August 8 and 9 with a fever, chills, cough, myalgia, runny nose, and headache. This person, a health care worker at a long-term care facility, worked on August 11 and 12. The CDC says this person was tested for the coronavirus on August 13 and received a positive result on August 18.The Maine CDC began monitoring the facility on August 21, and over the course of several weeks, 14 staff members and 24 residents tested positive for the coronavirus. The CDC said that six residents died and three others were hospitalized from the coronavirus.On August 11, four days after attending a wedding attended by 55 people, two attendees began experiencing general coronavirus symptoms, including fever, cough and sore throat. On August 12, they received the results of a positive coronavirus test.The next day, three more people tested positive for the virus, which prompted an investigation by Maine public health officials.Of the 55 guests, 27 tested positive for the coronavirus. In addition, two people working the wedding and a diner who was not a wedding guest, tested positive for the coronavirus.Through contact tracing, officials in Maine discovered an additional 27 cases in the community. While none of the wedding guests died, a person who came in contact with a wedding attendee died from the virus.The CDC said that a corrections employee who worked from August 15-19 and also attended the wedding tested positive for the coronavirus, along with four other employees. By September 1, 18 additional prison staff members and 46 inmates tested positive for the virus. In all, there were 82 cases at the correctional facility, none resulting in any deaths.The wedding reception venue took several precautions including temperature checks and requiring masks, but the CDC said that guests disregarded the mask requirement. The venue also broke the state requirement that wedding receptions be kept to a maximum of 50 guests amid the pandemic.“Community gatherings such as weddings, birthday parties, church events, and funerals have the potential to be SARS-CoV-2 super-spreading events,” the CDC said. “Increased transmission risk at such events might result from failure to maintain physical distancing and inconsistent use of masks. Transmission risk is further increased when events are held indoors.”The Maine wedding has been far from the only wedding tied to a super-spreader event. Earlier this week, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo slammed those holding large gatherings after 34 people became infected after attending an Oct. 17 wedding that had 113 guests. New York also has a restriction of wedding receptions attended by more than 50 people."As we have seen in weddings and similar events across the country during this pandemic, large gatherings can easily be super-spreader events, too often with dire consequences. Hosting one of these events after all New York has been through is obnoxious and irresponsible - not to mention illegal," Cuomo said. "We are eight months into this pandemic and simply will not tolerate businesses that put New Yorkers at risk. Those who continue to ignore the rules will lose their ability to serve alcohol.” 3792
