CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District is working with teachers to prepare for distance learning if and when classes resume after Spring Break. The district is currently closed because of coronavirus concerns, but district officials tell 10News plans are already in motion to figure out a way to complete the school year. District spokesperson Manny Rubio tells 10News the district is looking at distance learning, which can mean a number of things. Teachers could either teach virtually from home or provide students with learning material. Rubio says a majority of students already do a lot of online work and many of them have take home devices. The plans include addressing concerns that some students might not have devices or internet at their homes. Wednesday night, the district and the teachers union sent out a letter with guidance and information for teachers on how to move forward. All schools were deep cleaned and sanitized. Some schools are allowing teachers to enter their classrooms to get whatever materials they may need. For now, the plan is to have teachers return from Spring Break and allow for 2-3 days of planning before giving any direction to students and their parents. Officials are also keeping a close eye on updates from the state and the department of education. In the meantime, the district is still offering meal distribution while students are out of school. 1438

CINCINNATI -- A Blue Ash, Ohio nurse, worried she would be fired for being drunk at work, attempted to steal narcotic medications and flee from Cooper's Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on April 5, according to Hamilton County court documents. The medications stolen by 42-year-old Orlantha Shields included "combinations of morphine, fentanyl, codeine, oxycodone" and others, police said. "As she immediately left the facility, before the end of her shift and without proper medical supervision for the patients, she asked if anyone was going to tell on her and then exited the building," the affidavit for her arrest reads.A pharmacist taking stock of the assisted living facility's emergency supplies noticed the missing medication and Shields' signature in the logbook directly before the theft.Shields was indicted April 25 and charged with theft of dangerous drugs, a fourth-degree felony. 919

Chief Justice John Roberts made a rare statement on Wednesday pushing back against President Donald Trump after the President again went after federal judges."We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges," Roberts said. "What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them. That independent judiciary is something we should all be thankful for."Roberts' comment came in response to an inquiry from The Associated Press. On Tuesday, Trump slammed the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals again, this time after a judge from the Northern District of California -- where cases get appealed to the 9th Circuit -- issued a temporary restraining order blocking the Trump administration from barring migrants who cross into the US illegally from seeking asylum.Roberts, who then-President George W. Bush tapped to lead the Supreme Court, is the highest authority in the federal judiciary, and his remark was a rare direct response to the head of the Executive Branch.Trump has been a frequent critic of the 9th Circuit, and just a few months into his presidency, Trump said he was considering?breaking up the circuit that covers a slew of western states and Guam.Several of his most controversial policies have been held up by judges there, and the temporary block on his attempt to rewrite asylum rules marked the latest such instance. 1463

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Several Chula Vista elementary schools are working to give students hands-on engineering experience the district says they can take into the job market. On August 1, 2016, a new type of learning burst into being with the start of the Innovation and Energy Station in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. The station helps teach students STEM. The station serves sixth grade students as well as serving as a community lab. In 2018, the lab grew again to include the Energy Station at Saburo Muraoka Elementary School. In August of this year, the program grew yet again to include the Hydro Station, which teaches students about the water industry. The lab begins by helping students identify which careers align with their interests while highlighting jobs in San Diego’s priority sectors. “It was designed to give students the opportunity to learn about their own strengths," Michael Bruder, District engineering teacher told 10News. “The students’ eyes light up when they see the lab space. You get the ‘Wow’ effect. You literally hear the students say ‘Wow!’ as they enter,” Bruder continued. At the Energy Station, students use Minecraft to create an energy efficient home and/or landscape. Students exploring other themes could be testing wind turbines or building circuits. The program also offers students a connection with local employers, giving them the chance to connect their hands-on experience and the region’s in-demand skills. Qualcomm, Microsoft, SDG&E, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association all partner with the program. “I want employers to realize that career education must start before high school,” says Matthew Tessier, assistant superintendent of innovation and instruction at CVESD. “We’d love to partner with more people and expand to every single priority sector.”Click here to learn more about the program. 1950
