BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday called on parties involved in the Cote d'Ivoire crisis to solve disputes and differences through dialogue."We appreciate the positive efforts of the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to promote a peaceful settlement of the Cote d'Ivoire crisis," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei at a regular press briefing.Cote d'Ivoire has been in political crisis after both incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo and his rival Alassane Ouattara claimed victory in the presidential run-off of Nov. 28.The AU and the ECOWAS have sent a joint five-member high-level delegation to the Cote d'Ivoire to seek a peaceful resolution to the country's political crisis.Hong said peacefully settling the crisis is in the common interests of west African countries. He urged the parties involved in the crisis "to settle differences, achieve political reconciliation, and maintain national peace and stability through consultation."

BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Linagyu Thursday urged efforts be made to supervise the distribution and use of the living allowance for orphans.Tighter supervision should be maintained to make sure that basic living allowances were paid to orphans in a timely and sufficient manner, said Hui in Beijing at a high-level conference discussing the work to support orphans.The central government has allocated over 2.5 billion yuan (around 379 million U.S. dollars) as dedicated funds for the allowance policy in 2010, according to a circular jointly issued by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Minister of Finance in late November.Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu (C) speaks during a national teleconference on the orphan supporting work, held by the State Council of China in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 30, 2010. BEIJING, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday responded to Japan's new defense guidelines, saying China had no intention of threatening anybody.Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu made the remarks when responding to a question on the subject."A certain country has no right to act as a representative of the international community and make irresponsible remarks on China's development," she said.Japan adopted the National Defence Programme Guidelines Friday. Media reports said the guidelines claimed China's military development and lack of transparency were matters of concern to the region and international community, and urged nations to encourage China to act responsibly.China unswervingly follows the path of peaceful development, and its defense policy is defensive in nature, Jiang said, adding that China poses no threat to anybody."The fact is that China's development since its reform and opening up, has brought huge opportunities of common prosperity to the world, including Japan," Jiang said.
