You see a dog enter a restaurant with a vest that says "service dog."How do you, or the restaurant, know if the dog is actually a trained service dog? It's a problem that has prompted more than a dozen states to crack down on people trying to pass off their pet as a service animal."They make me angry, they really do," said Colleen Belanger.Belanger has a service dog and she is upset people are using fake service dogs. She said it is a growing concern as more and more people are taking advantage of the system. Some dog owners buy service costumes online so they can take their untrained dogs into places they don't belong.Belanger said it's not right because her dog Madison is much more than a pet."This is a medical device to me. It's the same as having a wheelchair, cane or oxygen," Belanger said. For Madison to become a service dog, she had to be put through rigorous training and documentation.Belanger said having Madison with her is a matter of life or death.Belanger has asthma and a severe allergy, which is something Madison has been taught to detect and prevent.Michigan State University Professor David Favre said phony service dogs could be dangerous."The non-service dog animals are not really trained. They are no level near the amount of training real service dogs are. So you will have problems of noise and barking and possible biting. You just never know what these untrained dogs will do," Favre said.Favre said Michigan recently passed a law that made fake service animals illegal."It's a misdemeanor, a low level crime. Possibly 90 days in jail and a fine," Favre said.As for Belanger, she said fake service animals could potentially ruin the good reputations of so many life saving animals. She hopes striker laws are put in place."Those of us who are disabled, we need this. So we can go out and enjoy life just like other people do," Belanger said. While Michigan passed a law making it illegal to lie about a service animal, Favre said there is no state or federal law requiring a person to prove to a business their service animal is legitimate. 2082

YUBA CITY, Calif. (AP) — A California man whose suicide attempt left his face disfigured had successful facial transplant surgery 18 months later, and the lead surgeon estimates his face should be "pristine" in as little as three years.Cameron Underwood, 26, of Yuba City, had the 25-hour operation that involved more than 100 medical staff in January. Less than a year later, Underwood can speak intelligibly. He is golfing and has even gone skydiving, The Sacramento Bee reported Friday.Underwood appeared Thursday at a news conference at New York City's NYU Langone Health center, where he smiled and thanked medical staffers and his family for giving him a second chance at life."There have been so many amazing advances in surgery. I'm living proof of that. But it only happens because of special people like Will and his family," Underwood said referring to Will Fisher, his organ donor. Before Underwood's 2016 suicide attempt, he was employed as a welder and machine worker in Yuba City, as told by family members in a story this month in People magazine.Underwood had struggled with depression since adolescence and shot himself after a day of drinking, disintegrating the bottom of his face. With just 18 months between the initial injury and the surgery, Underwood's procedure represented the shortest wait time for a face transplant in the U.S., said the lead surgeon, Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez."We're able to take advantage of the most advanced technological procedures that exist, and we can do a lot of computerized planning before we do the operation," Rodriguez said at Thursday's news conference.Rodriguez estimated about three to five years until his face is "pristine."Underwood's body has shown no signs of rejecting the transplanted face so far, Rodriguez said."There was no way we could have ever taken him back to a normal life without a face transplant," the surgeon said.Underwood still lives in California but must continue to travel monthly to New York City to see the surgeon.Fewer than 50 face transplants have been performed worldwide, and fewer than 10 total or near-total operations have been performed in the United States.___Information from: The Sacramento Bee, http://www.sacbee.com 2221

on Interstate 41/94 killed two semi truck drivers and seriously injured two other people.Racine County Sheriff Chris Schmaling said as a semi truck heading south on the interstate tried to change lanes they hit a construction barrier that pushed the median into the northbound lanes.Three other passenger vehicles heading north collided as a result. Schmaling said a second semi truck heading north tried to avoid the collision causing it to veer off the road and crashed before bursting into flames. The sheriff said they received several 911 calls reporting the crash and explosions. He attributed the explosion sounds to tires in the crash heating up then blowing up."In my 24 years on this job and this is the worst accident I’ve ever been a part of," said Schmaling. The crash shut down I-94 and frontage roads to traffic for several hours causing lenthy back ups. The sheriff said emergency responders had difficulty getting to the scene.Schmaling urged drivers to be cautious driving in extreme construction zones, adding a small mistake can have a devastating impact."These are interstate speeds were talking about and ultimately it cost him his life and the life of another human being, and I hope and pray that the lives of the others are right now in the hospital getting care don’t lose their lives as well. It just underscores the importance that we need to slow down, pay attention and be aware of our surroundings when we’re under construction," said Schmaling. The sheriff describe the second semi truck driver's actions to avoid hitting the three passenger vehicles as heroic.Authorities have not identified the two drivers who died. This story was originally published on 1688

about the danger of lice.Optometrists say they've seen more cases of "lash lice" due to the new trend. Many people who get the extensions are afraid to wash their lashes because their extensions may fall out.Experts say that not washing eyelashes can increase bacteria and lead to infection. Even worse, lice can show up, and they can spread.Doctors say cleaning is critical."We recommend tea tree-based cleanser," Dr. Sairah Malik said. "Any cleanser that has a diluted form of tea tree. And it is a good idea to use it on a daily basis."Doctors also say that it is a good idea to give your eyes a break from lash extensions every once in a while. This story was originally published by 689

Zachary Cruz left a dog boarding facility in Greenacres, Florida on Sunday with a dog named Coby in his arms. Coby is one of two family dogs he plans to take to his new home in Virginia.Back on Valentines Day, Cruz's adopted brother Nikolas killed 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. "A lot of things I wish I would have done to prevent it, wish I could have stopped him somehow," Zachary said.Zachary said he and his brother fought a lot when they were younger though their relationship improved as they grew.RELATED: More Parkland coverage "I felt I was too hard on him at times. He was a fragile person. Mom was always there for him," added he said.A judge on Friday gave Zachary permission to move from South Florida. He was on probation after a March arrest for trespassing at Stoneman Douglas.Zachary is being helped by the legal rights group Nexus Services. He'll get counseling, and a job as a maintenance technician."I think getting him to a new place where he can come out of the shadow of his brothers heinous act and get an opportunity is really important," said Mike Donovan with Nexus."I just want to end bullying, it's just dumb.  Everyone deserves to fit in," Zachary said.As for his plans in Virginia, Zachary said he wants to finish high school, start an anti-bullying campaign and live his life. 1406
