Global wildlife populations have fallen by 60% in just over four decades, as accelerating pollution, deforestation, climate change and other manmade factors have created a "mindblowing" crisis, the World Wildlife Fund has warned in a damning new report.The total numbers of more than 4,000 mammal, bird, fish, reptile and amphibian species declined rapidly between 1970 and 2014, the Living Planet Report 2018 says.Current rates of species extinction are now up to 1,000 times higher than before human involvement in animal ecosystems became a factor.The proportion of the planet's land that is free from human impact is projected to drop from a quarter to a tenth by 2050, as habitat removal, hunting, pollution, disease and climate change continue to spread, the organization added.The group has called for an international treaty, modeled on the Paris climate agreement, to be drafted to protect wildlife and reverse human impacts on nature.It warned that current efforts to protect the natural world are not keeping up with the speed of manmade destruction.The crisis is "unprecedented in its speed, in its scale and because it is single-handed," said Marco Lambertini, the WWF's director general. "It's mindblowing. ... We're talking about 40 years. From making snow angels to picking snowball fights with your friends, playing in the snow can be a lot of fun.But one Colorado town didn't think so. In Severance, a town about 60 miles north of Denver, it's long been illegal to throw snowballs.Dane Best, 9, thought the law was "silly." The young town resident might have even broken it once in a while.So with the help of his classmates, Best decided to take it upon himself to change the law. He collected letters and signatures in support of snowball fights, did some research and presented his case at a Severance Town Council meeting on Monday."It is an outdated law," Best told council members, according to CNN affiliate KCNC. "And I want to throw a snowball without getting in trouble."Now he can, after the council unanimously approved a measure to legalize throwing snowballs within town limits.Mayor Don McLeod told CNN that the law was part of a more elaborate ordinance, Sec. 10-5-80, that said, "It is unlawful for any person to throw or shoot any stone or any other missile upon or at any person, animal, building, tree or other public or private property; or at or against any vehicle or equipment design for the transportation of persons or property."When Dane and his classmates visited town hall this fall on a field trip, McLeod pointed out that the law -- although it's not enforced -- would include throwing snowballs at people."The kids were super intrigued when they found out they have been breaking the law this whole time," the mayor told CNN."Every year when the kiddos come to town hall, I point out little laws we have, and I challenge these third-graders to change them. Dane was the first student to take me up on this, and I'm very proud that he did."After winning his argument, Dane was given the town's first legal snowball to throw in celebration. His parents couldn't be more excited."We are proud of him for taking initiative to make some change, no matter how small it may be," Derrick Best, Dane's father, told KCNC. According to KCNC, another current town law allows a maximum of three pets per household and only includes cats and dogs. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A young woman finally has her class ring back nearly 20 years after losing it. It was found in West Michigan, but she's not even from Michigan."I've been doing this for 10 years, and in those 10 years I found over 115 rings," said Gregg Larabel, who found the ring.You could say Larabel always had a knack for finding things."My dad got us started in 1972 with a little bounty hunter, and I've been metal detecting ever since," Larabel explained. "Then, I come across this Ring Finders site and joined it, and here I am."The Ring Finders is an international organization that prides itself on recovering millions of dollars in lost jewelry. But most importantly, they make sure these priceless items get back to their owners."I've had a couple of ,000 rings. We're still looking for a ,000 ring in Bloomfield Hills in a duck pond," he said.It doesn't matter where or how long ago it was lost, you give the Ring Finders an idea of where your jewelry might be and they'll get to work.That brings us to his latest find on the shores of Beechpoint Christian Camp in Allegan county. While searching for one ring, Larabel and diver Aaron Westrick of Superior Dive Service came across another ring."I found a class ring from 2001. I looked at the inscription on it. It was DeVonia Foster and from Lourdes Lyons High School," Larabel explained.That's Lourdes Lyons High School in Chicago. So, how did the ring end up in West Michigan 20 years later? We caught up with DeVonia Foster."It's funny because I'm a part of the scholarship program at my old Catholic school, and we used to do these camps every year," Foster explained. "We went off to Michigan and Wisconsin and things like that. So, I believe just out there on a camping experience, I lost it."Foster was a former multi-sport athlete who graduated in 2001. "I have the basketball on one side [of the ring], and then I have two track wings on the other," she said. "It was a treat. I'm from a single-parent home, so it was a sacrifice to even get a ring that expensive."Regarding losing the ring, Foster laughed, remembering "it was kind of a bummer, because it's like, 'Oh, I see why [ my mom] didn't buy me nothing expensive.'"Larabel contacted Foster through Facebook and drove three hours to Chicago to personally drop it off."It's funny that Gregg just reached out, and he just lost his wife," Foster mused. Henry Gonzales isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty or clean up his community.He started working on farm fields at 13 and saw firsthand the struggles of migrant farmworkers.“I remember the terror on the face of coworkers back then when immigration would drive, stop by,” he said.Gonzales has since worked his way from farmhand to Agricultural Commissioner of Monterey County the fourth largest agricultural producing county in the country.Producing .4 billion worth of produce in 2019, Gonzales is now looking to protect the area’s products and the 60,000-plus agricultural industry workers.“It’s critically important not just for them but for everybody that eats that produce,” he said.Gonzales’ team recently introduced a hotline for farmworkers and their families to report safety concerns, ranging from COVID-19 to smoke from the nearby wildfires.Staffed by agricultural inspector biologists 24/7, 365 days a year, Gonzales calls this hotline the first of its kind in the country and industry leaders are taking notice.“It causes a lot more appreciation for those hands that are harvesting our crops,” said Norm Groot, executive director of the Monterey County Farm Bureau.He believes this hotline can help improve working conditions and the agricultural industry overall.With Hispanics and Latinos, ethnic groups that make up most farmworkers in the area, accounting for more than 75% of the confirmed COVID-19 cases in Monterey Country, this hotline comes at a time where it’s needed more than ever.“I think it’s critical that we have some sort of avenue that farmworkers can feel that they have a voice,” Groot said.The funding for this hotline comes from the county’s pesticide budget.While callers can remain anonymous, Gonzales understands the hesitations.“Many of them are concerned if they call, they complain that there might be retaliatory measures taken against them,” he said. “So, we do reassure them that there are laws to protect them from retaliation.”From farmhand to government leader, Gonzales has worked his way up in the agricultural industry and hopes this hotline inspires others to take similar actions.“We’ve just increased the standard as it were for everyone in the state, other ag commissioners and other agencies to do the same,” he said.To contact the hotline, call 831-809-2394. 2324
