ROME, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Italy are working on a plan to expand their bilateral economic cooperation as the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Italy diplomatic ties is just round the corner, said Chinese Ambassador to Italy Ding Wei on Saturday.The Chinese government is happy to see an enhanced and deepened economic ties between the two countries, said Ding while meeting with Adriano Luci, chairman of the industry association in Italy's northeastern city of Udine.He said Udine enjoyed a well-developed industrial capacity and saw ever-closer ties among Chinese and Italian firms.Ding hoped the association could encourage its member companies to champion the cooperation between Chinese enterprises and their Italian counterparts so as to materialize common development.Luci briefed Ding on Udine's industrial development, its companies' investment in China as well as their participation in the on-going Shanghai World Expo.He said he is willing to see the Italian and Chinese companies having more exchanges and further expanded areas of cooperation.According to Invitalia, the Italian official agency for promoting overseas investment and enterprise development, investment from Chinese companies in Italy has surged since 2000 and mainly goes to three main sectors, namely the automotive industry, logistics and machinery.Bilateral trade volume between China and Italy in the first half of 2010 registered a 36.3 percent rise compared to that of the same period last year, reaching some 20 million U.S. dollars.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice Premier Li Keqiang has stressed the importance of quality management, proper resettlement of people, environmental protection and preventing corruption in building the country's South-to-North Water Diversion Project.North China had long suffered from water shortages and the project is a strategic infrastructure goal that would benefit the Chinese people, Li told high-ranking government officials at a forum held Saturday in Nanyang, a city in central China's Henan Province.According to a design, a canal serving the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project will be in Nanyang City.Building the project concerns China's national economic and social development and the long-term development of the Chinese nation, said Li, also director of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Commission (SNWDPC) of the State Council.Further, the enormous complexity of the South-to North Water Diversion Project called for excellent coordination and organization in pushing forward the construction, he said.Li also stressed the importance of quality management in the project, saying quality control was the core task for building the project into a world-class one.Also, resettlement of people is a key issue in carrying forward the project, and efforts needed to be made to make sure that people are properly resettled and they have the capabilities to increase their wealth, he said.Additionally, Li said, during the process of building the project, more attention should be given to protecting water resources and preventing water pollution.He also called for strengthened supervision of the funding used for the project to prevent corruption and to punish those violating the law.The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is designed to divert water from the water-rich south of China, mainly the Yangtze, the country's longest river, to the country's arid northern part. It will consist of three routes: eastern, middle and western ones. The project started with construction of the eastern route in 2002.Up to now, both of the eastern and middle routes are already under construction. The western route, meant to replenish the Yellow River with water from the upper reaches of the Yangtze through tunnels in the high mountains of western China, is still at the planning stage.About 330,000 people in Hubei and Henan provinces will be relocated before the middle route is completed in 2014.

BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- China expects Japan to make joint efforts so as to maintain and advance the two nations' ties, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu on Saturday.Ma made these remarks when asked to comment on a statement made by Japan's Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara who reportedly said on Friday that as the world's second and third largest economies, Japan and China should work together to continue pushing forward the two countries' strategic links."We have taken note of the statement. We expect Japan to work with us in joint efforts to maintain and advance the strategic bilateral relationship of mutual benefit," Ma said.Maehara said on Monday China's countermeasures in September following Japan's detention of a Chinese trawler captain near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea were "hysterical."Ma responded on Tuesday that China was shocked by the comments and urged Japan to take concrete actions to repair ties.

BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) - Members from friendship associations of China and Japan on Friday voiced their hope for people-to-people exchanges to help improve strained China-Japan relations after recent disputes.The proposal was launched at a conference held in the Great Hall of the People to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Japan-China Friendship Association (JCFA), a friendly group established on Oct. 1, 1950 with the view to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the two peoples and promote bilateral exchanges and trade."Friendly groups should take the 60th anniversary as a new starting point to deepen friendly exchanges between the two countries, especially between the youth, and contribute to the China-Japan strategic relationship of reciprocity," said President of the China-Japan Friendship Association (CJFA) Song Jian. He also spoke highly of the contribution made by the JCFA for the development of China-Japan relations.People-to-people exchanges have always played an important role in the history of bilateral relations. It not only helped the two countries normalize ties but also improve the bilateral relations when they were strained by some issues such as the visits paid by former Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro to the Yasukuni Shrine.Regarding the recent friction between the two countries caused by a ship collision, people-to-people exchanges were expected to play a role again.Two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided on Sept. 7 in the waters off the Diaoyu Islands. Japan's subsequent illegal detention of the Chinese trawler and crew members resulted in strong protests from the Chinese government and public. China then halted bilateral exchanges at and above provincial and ministerial levels. The crew and the boat were released after the Chinese side took some countermeasures."China and Japan are neighboring countries separated by only a thin strip of water. People of the two countries boast a 2000-year history of friendly exchanges. The good-neighboring relationship between China and Japan is not only in the fundamental interests of the two peoples, but also conducive to the peace, stability and prosperity of the region and the world at large," Song said.He added that the history of the 20th century proved that it is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples to maintain peaceful coexistence, friendship lasting for generations, reciprocal cooperation and common development."It is a long-term and hard task to promote the development of the China-Japan friendship, and it needs the efforts from both sides," Song said.For his part, JCFA's vice chairman Shoichi Ide also pledged to make efforts to deepen mutual understanding between the two countries.Japan and China are facing a new situation to further deepen the bilateral strategic relations. BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday said the country's 12th five-year development plan, starting in 2011, should reflect the consensus of the entire society and motivate people from all walks of life.He also encouraged national political advisors to actively offer suggestions for the plan.Wen made the remarks in Beijing at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body.The national political advisors convened their meeting two days after the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee ended a four-day plenary session that set the outline of the 12th five-year plan, with key objectives in economic restructuring and improving living standards nationwide among others.In Wednesday's meeting, Wen said the State Council, or the Cabinet, would draw up the plan as outlined by the CPC Central Committee.He also said the theme of the 12th five-year plan was "scientific development" and would require China to accelerate the transformation of its economic growth mode, which he called "a strategic task of great urgency."The meeting was presided over by Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee.
