The college admissions scheme revealed Tuesday is the largest of its kind ever prosecuted, federal prosecutors said, and features 50 defendants across six states, millions of dollars in illegally funneled funds and a handful of the country's most selective universities. But at its core, the alleged scheme is remarkably simple -- and brazen.Cheat on standardized tests. Bribe the people who decide which students get admitted. All the while pretending that money was for charity."I'll speak more broadly, there were essentially two kinds of fraud that Singer was selling," US Attorney Andrew Lelling said, referring to William Rick Singer, the figure at the center of the scheme."One was to cheat on the SAT or ACT, and the other was to use his connections with Division I coaches and use bribes to get these parents' kids into school with fake athletic credentials," Lelling said at a press conference in Boston.A total of 50 people were charged in the case. Those arrested include two SAT/ACT administrators, one exam proctor, nine coaches at elite schools, one college administrator and 33 parents, according to Lelling. Here's how the plan worked, according to prosecutors.Cheating on the ACTs and SATsOf course, students who score higher on standardized tests such as the ACT and SAT are more likely to get into selective colleges.Given that, Singer facilitated cheating on those exams for students whose wealthy parents paid for his services.Singer pleaded guilty in court on Tuesday to four federal charges and admitted that the case against him was accurate.According to the indictment, he arranged for a third-party -- generally Mark Riddell, who is 1670

The couple who Phoenix police "terrorized" after their daughter took a doll from a store will speak during a meeting with the city's mayor Tuesday evening, and will be joined by a number of community members who say they have experienced police brutality in the city, a family spokesman said.Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego announced the meeting Saturday, saying she "asked our Police Chief to be present to listen directly to the concerns of our community members," and discuss solutions. The announcement came shortly after two videos surfaced which showed officers pulling guns on and threatening to shoot Dravon Ames and his fiancee Iesha Harper last month, during a shoplifting investigation. The couple says their daughter walked out of a Family Dollar store with a doll without them noticing.Police released surveillance video from the store on Monday. One video shows Ames standing in a store aisle. According to the police report, he told officers he stole underwear. In another clip, a little girl holding a box is seen talking to a woman who appears to be standing in a checkout line. That woman throws the merchandise she had been holding at a display and walks out of the store. The little girl waits for two other adults and leaves the store with them, still holding the box. After the release of the store's surveillance footage, the couple's attorney Thomas Horne said nothing justifies the police response."Whether it was a little bit of shoplifting or a little bit less of shoplifting, it doesn't justify what happened," Horne said. The Rev. Jarrett Maupin, the spokesman, said Monday the families who would be at Tuesday's meeting include relatives of 1674

The Democratic National Committee plans to meet with 2020 campaigns next week to hand out an "affirmation form" for candidates to sign and certify they will run and serve as members of the Democratic Party, a DNC official said Tuesday. The announcement follows Bernie Sanders' entry into the 2020 campaign earlier Tuesday — his second consecutive presidential election. An independent who caucuses with Democrats in the Senate, Sanders rankled some Democrats in 2016 when he ran for the nomination even though he wasn't an official member of the party.DNC members passed a new rule last August, which was seen as a response to the Sanders campaign, requiring all candidates "to affirm in writing" that they "are a member of the Democratic Party, will accept the Democratic nomination; will run and serve as a member of the Democratic Party."According to the DNC, all the campaigns who have announced have been invited to the meeting. Once they receive the form, they will have a week to return it to the DNC."The DNC will present presidential campaigns that have currently announced their candidacy or the creation of an exploratory committee, with the rules and other materials next week at a briefing and this will include the candidate affirmation form," the official said. "As any additional candidates enter the race, they will be provided with the same information and will be required to return the form in the same time frame."The Sanders campaign didn't immediately respond to say whether the senator would sign the form.Sanders officially jumped into the 2020 race with stronger party support than he had four years ago. Both Democratic members of his state's congressional delegation, Sen. Pat Leahy and Rep. Pete Welch, endorsed him. According to a campaign official, Sanders has already raised more than million dollars since the morning announcement. 1878

The CDC released updated figures on Friday of measles cases in the United States so far in 2019, indicating this year marks the highest level of measles cases in the U.S. since 1992. Despite the rise of measles in recent years, the CDC still considers measles eliminated in the U.S. The CDC says that measles elimination means the absence of continuous disease transmission for 12 months or more in a specific geographic area. The CDC said that the majority of cases involved large and close-knit Orthodox Jewish communities in New York, which accounted for 75 percent of cases during 2019. These cases threatened the elimination status of measles in the United States.During January 1–October 1, 2019, a total of 1,249 measles cases, according to CDC. Of the 1,249 cases, 89 percent were unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status."Undervaccinated, close-knit communities are not unique to the United States and exist around the world," the CDC said in a release. "These communities are at high risk for outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, which threaten the health and safety of vulnerable persons within, as well as outside of, these communities. "Therefore, public health authorities need to identify pockets of undervaccinated persons to prevent these outbreaks, which require substantial resources to control. A preventive strategy to build vaccine confidence is important, especially one that uses culturally appropriate communication strategies to offset misinformation and disseminate accurate information about the safety and importance of vaccination in advance of outbreaks." 1614
