MOSCOW, June 1 (Xinhua) -- The BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are able to realize rapid economic growth after the current financial crisis tides over, said Chinese and Russian experts during a Beijing-Moscow televised conference on Monday.     The emerging economies, represented by the BRIC countries, are playing a stabilizing role amid the ongoing crisis, said Chen Fengying, director of the Institute of World Economy Studies in China's Institute of Contemporary International Relations.     Chen said the BRIC countries, which could contribute much more to the global economic growth this year, may further lead the world economy in a post-crisis era, should they realize the industrial restructuring and the transition of economic growth patterns.     Judging from macroeconomic indicators such as international balances, scales of debt and deficit, the BRIC countries may weather through the financial crisis earlier than the major developed countries, said Lev Frainkman, an expert from Russia's Institute for the Economy in Transition.     These countries also have ample reserve funds to implement their anti-crisis measures, said Frainkman.     The BRIC summit scheduled to be held in mid-June in Yekaterinburg, Russia, has displayed BRIC countries' cooperative willingness to jointly ward off the crisis, said Sergei Alexashenko, director of Macroeconomic Studies at Russia's Higher School of Economics.     BRIC countries may integrate respective resources to seek cooperation in aircraft manufacture and software development, he added.     Li Yongquan, deputy director of the Euro-Asian Social Development Research Institute at China's Development Research of the State Council, said of all the bilateral and multilateral cooperation within the framework of the BRIC countries, he particularly expects a great prospect for China-Russia cooperation.     Li suggested China and Russia further exploit cooperative potentials in four spheres such as technologies, natural resources, human resources and marketing.

BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attended the 11th China-EU summit with European leaders in Prague on Wednesday, focusing on bilateral strategic partnership, the global financial crisis and climate change.     The two sides reached a number of consensus at the summit which will play an active role in promoting a sustainable development of bilateral relations in an in-depth and all-around way.     Premier Wen stayed in Prague for a mere of five hours, but needed a 20-hour flight to go forth and back, indicating his sincerity, responsibility and confidence in meeting with the EU leaders.     Sincerity, responsibility and confidence are crucial in pushing forward the comprehensive China-EU strategic partnership, which is the experience drawn from the past and the need of reality.     Under the complex international political and economic situation, the China-EU relations have gone beyond the bilateral scope and bears more international significance.     China and the EU enjoy a solid basis in continuing cooperation and meeting challenges jointly.     Up to now, the two sides have set up more than 50 consultation and dialogue mechanisms covering political, trade, scientific, energy and environmental areas.     It is not worthy that the China-EU trade volume exceeded 425 billion U.S. dollars in 2008 in face of global slump, representing a 19.5-percent growth over the previous year.     At a time when the raging financial storm hit the world, the major tune for bilateral ties should be mutual support.     Just as what EU Commission President Jose Barroso described, China is a "crucial partner" in international efforts to counter global challenges, such as the economic and financial crisis and climate change.     Challenge also generates opportunities while posing danger to the world. It also signals Beijing's confidence to jointly tackle the global financial crisis with EU partners.     As the world's largest developing country and the largest bloc of developed nations respectively, China and EU need to develop steadily by clearing obstacles first, thanks to the fact that both sides enjoy huge potential and broad prospects for further cooperation.     EU should recognize China's market economy status as soon as possible, loosen its control over export restrictions on high-techproducts and lift its arms embargo to China, measures which will be conducive to nurturing new growth engines for trade and economic cooperation and expanding fields of cooperation.     Since the first China-EU summit in 1998, the international political and economic situation has experienced profound changes. BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua)-- China has allocated 23 billion yuan (3.37billion U.S. dollars) for energy saving, anti-pollution, ecological and environmental protection projects since the fourth quarter of last year, a senior official told Xinhua Wednesday.     Han Yongwen, secretary-general of the National Development and Reform Commission, said investment in these sectors accounted for 10 percent of the 230 billion yuan government spending to date on infrastructure, ecological and environmental sectors, quake relief and other areas.     China unveiled a 4-trillion-yuan stimulus package in November last year to be spent over the next two years with 1.18 trillion yuan spending from the central government, to cope with the adverse effects of the global financial crisis and shore up the domestic economy.     "This ratio of 10 percent was not low. It shows that the central government not only focuses on stimulating domestic demand and keeping stable economic growth, but also stresses laying a good foundation for the economy's sustainable development in the long run," Han said.     Of the 23 billion yuan spending, 13 billion went to improving urban water treatment facilities, 4 billion yuan to pollution prevention projects on the Huaihe and other big rivers, 3.5 billion yuan to forest planting projects and the other 2.5 billion yuan to key energy saving projects across the country.

XI'AN, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese archaeologists started a new excavation of the famous terracotta army site Saturday, hoping to find more clay figures and unravel some of the mysteries left behind by the "First Emperor."     It was the third excavation in the pit -- the first and largest of three pits at the site near Xi'an, capital of northwestern Shaanxi Province -- since 1974 when the terracotta army was discovered by peasants digging a well. Archeologists began the third large-scale excavation of the Terra-cotta Warriors on June 13, China's fourth Cultural Heritage Day, after a halt of over 20 years.FIRST DAY: "BETTER THAN THOUGHT"     The new dig began at 1 p.m. Saturday, which marks the country's fourth Cultural Heritage Day, and it lasted about five hours on the first day.     "The most important discovery today is two four-horse chariots that are standing in tandem very closely," said Cao Wei, deputy curator of the Qinshihuang Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum.     "It is the first time for us to find such an existence in the excavation history," Cao said. His argument is still not widely accepted by other terracotta experts.     The army is still known to most Chinese people as the "terracotta warriors and horses."     The army was one of the greatest archeological finds of modern times. It was discovered in Lintong county, 35 km east of Xi'an, in 1974 by peasants who were digging a well.     The first formal excavation of the site lasted for six years from 1978 to 1984 and produced 1,087 clay figures. A second excavation, in 1985, lasted a year and was cut short for technical reasons.     The discovery, listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO in December 1987, has turned Xi'an into one of China's major tourist attractions.

BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso here on Thursday, calling on the two sides to cherish achievements made in bilateral ties.     "Since my visit to Japan in May last year, related parties on the two sides have made every effort to implement the consensus and decisions agreed upon during the visit, and had attained important progress in promoting the strategic and mutually-beneficial relations between China and Japan," Hu told Aso at the Great Hall of the People.     "These achievements have not come easy and should be cherished by us," said Hu.     Hu noted that as the global financial crisis spreads, trade between China and Japan had declined obviously. He urged the two sides to take effective measures to put bilateral trade and investment back on the track of stable growth as soon as possible. Sound cooperation in political and economic fields and the continuous advancement of the strategic and mutually-beneficial relationship between them have laid a solid foundation for the future of this relationship, said the Japanese prime minister.     Aso said it is Japan's wish that the two countries will continue with the close communications at high level, strengthen cooperation in various fields, step up coordination in coping with the international financial and economic crisis, and promote youth exchanges.     Aso arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a two-day China tour, his first official visit to China since he took office in September.
