SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Hanukkah, Judaism's eight-day commemoration of the temple rededication that followed the Maccabees' victory over a larger Syrian army, begins at sundown Thursday evening, with socially distant and virtual events replacing public menorah lighting ceremonies because of coronavirus-related restrictions.Hanukkah runs through Friday, Dec. 18 this year.At 5 p.m. Thursday, Liberty Station -- in partnership with The Chabads of Downtown San Diego and Pacific Beach -- will host a public menorah lighting at Liberty Station's Central Promenade to commemorate the first night of Hanukkah. The family-friendly festivities will feature music and the traditional lighting of the menorah.Entertainment includes Cyr Wheel Acrobats and Fire Dancers, packaged treats and the traditional lighting of the menorah. The Central Promenade has 20,000 square feet of space in which to spread out and socially distance. The organizers ask guests in attendance to stay masked when not eating or drinking. The largest regional event for the religious holiday will be a drive-in concert at the Del Mar Fairgrounds at 4:30 p.m. Monday, when all The Chabad Centers of San Diego County will host their Chanukah Spectacular, featuring a Grand Menorah lighting, Chanukah gifts and musical performances headlined by Israeli pop star Gad Elbaz.Tickets are available at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/chanukah-spectacular-featuring-israeli-pop-star-gad-elbaz-tickets-129094096919.Once the Jews defeated the Hellenist Syrian forces of Antiochus IV in 165 B.C. at the end of a three-year rebellion, the temple in Jerusalem, which the occupiers had dedicated to the worship of Zeus, was rededicated by Judah Maccabee, who led the insurgency begun by his father, the high priest Mattathias.According to the story of Hanukkah, Maccabee and his soldiers wanted to light the temple's ceremonial lamp with ritually pure olive oil as part of their rededication but found only enough oil to burn for one day. The oil, however, burned for eight days in what was held to be a miracle.Hanukkah -- which means "dedication" in Hebrew -- is observed around the world by lighting candles in a special menorah called a Hanukkiah each day at sundown for eight days, with an additional candle added each day.The reason for the lights is so passersby should see them and be reminded of the holiday's miracle.Hanukkah begins on the 25th day of Kislev, the ninth month of the Hebrew calendar. The Hebrew calendar is lunar, as opposed to the solar Gregorian calendar.Other Hanukkah traditions include spinning a dreidel, a four-sided top, which partially commemorates a game that Jews under Greek domination are believed to have played to camouflage their Torah study, and eating foods fried in oil, such as latkes, pancakes of grated raw potatoes and jelly doughnuts.Children receive Hanukkah "gelt" (the Yiddish word for money) from parents and grandparents. The tradition originated with 17th-century Polish Jews giving money to their children to give their teachers during Hanukkah, which led to parents also giving children money. In the United States, the practice has evolved into giving holiday gifts to children and others.Unlike on the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana -- the Jewish new year -- or Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement -- observant Jews are permitted to work and attend school during Hanukkah, the only Jewish holiday that commemorates a military victory. 3440

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Friday for help in identifying whoever has been hurling or shooting things at moving cars in Mission Bay Park in recent months, causing extensive property damage along with some injuries. On at least eight nights since November, someone has thrown or shot unidentified objects or projectiles at vehicles traveling in the area of Ingraham Street and West Mission Bay Drive, just west of SeaWorld San Diego, according to police. The targeted cars sustained damages, including dented bodies and broken windshields, totaling between 0 and ,000 each, officials said. Two drivers suffered minor cuts from flying glass.Since the crimes have taken place in the late evening or early morning on dark stretches of roadway, none of the victims has been able to provide a description of the responsible vandal or vandals.Anyone with information about any of the incidents is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or contact the agency online at sdcrimestoppers.org. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As part of its reopening plan amid the coronavirus pandemic, the San Diego Unified School District allowed some students facing severe challenges to return to in-person learning today, but a timeline for the district to reopen fully remains unclear.Phase 1 of the district's plan to reopen is to allow elementary school students ``who have been uniquely identified by their teachers as experiencing learning loss'' to have limited in-person appointments.Participation is voluntary and students who participate in the sessions will continue to receive online learning. On Tuesday, Lafayette Elementary School in the Clairemont Mesa neighborhood invited back 25 of the 27 students who were asked to return to in- person instruction -- many of whom are part of a deaf and hard-of-hearing program at the school. The district's Phase 1 includes a mandate for less than 20% capacity for rooms and for schools, half days to avoid groups eating at schools and a six-foot distancing everywhere on school grounds -- barriers or no barriers. This summer, San Diego Unified adopted standards developed in consultation with experts from UC San Diego. As a result, conditions for the district's reopening local schools are considerably stricter than state standards, and much stricter than various other school districts in the region that have opened for in-person learning.According to the district, all California Department of Public Health criteria has been met to a level where limited in-person classes are possible. The next stage will be when both state and county data fit the district's stricter metrics. That date is anyone's guess, leading to some frustration from parents.Parents and guardians in the ``Reopen SDUSD'' group said the district's current reopening plan was ``riddled with vague language that is a far cry from a comprehensive plan that families have been asking for.''With the criteria SDUSD has in place, it could be weeks or months until in-person school becomes more widely used. Even then, it's not a guarantee school will head back as soon as the numbers fit.In the Chula Vista Elementary School District, a push from Superintendent Francisco Escobedo to reopen the state's largest elementary school district for in person instruction on Oct. 26 was met with significant backlash from the Chula Vista Educators union.Susan Skala, the union representative, said collective action and possibly even a strike was on the table unless Escobedo and the administration backed down. Chula Vista is seeing higher-than-average numbers of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, and after parents, guardians and educators spoke at a town hall last week, the district relented, moving the new start date to sometime ``near the end of the year.''That example leaves San Diego Unified with a difficult path to walk during the continuing pandemic with public safety, education, unions and families all playing a part. The district has made efforts to make schools and sites safe, purchasing million in personal protective equipment and other safety equipment. It has also received some 200,000 masks in child and adult sizes from the state, along with 14,000 bottles of hand sanitizer. 3211

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and the University of San Diego launched a small business accelerator program Monday for the communities of Chollas, City Heights, Encanto, Linda Vista, Rolando and Redwood Village. The Innovate-Up program will leverage roughly .5 million in resources from the county and USD to support and invest in local businesses. The program is funded in part by a 0,000 grant from the county to USD's Brink Small Business Development Center.Starting later this month, Innovate-Up will begin hosting free weekly workshops to offer one-on-one consulting and small group meetings between small business owners and industry leaders, county staff and USD faculty.RELATED: City of San Diego's 10 steps to launching a small business or startupAt each meeting, business owners will learn about how to bid on local government or university contracts, branding and marketing, how to attract seed money and how to certify a business as veteran-owned, women-owned or minority-owned.``Innovative products and new technologies don't just come from people living in Silicon Valley; I believe we have that same caliber of an entrepreneur living in Encanto, Chollas, City Heights, Rolando, Redwood and Linda Vista,'' Fletcher said. ``Innovate-Up will cultivate our homegrown talent, and help them to make a lasting impact on their community.''The first Innovate-Up workshop is scheduled for Aug. 22 at the Malcolm X Library. Small business owners can find a full list of Innovate-Up workshops and sign up for them at innovate-up.com/events. Program organizers can also be contacted at 619-260-4547 or info@innovate-up.com. 1658
