1 in 3 parents do not plan on having their child get the flu vaccine, according to a new poll.C.S. Mott Children's Hospital conducted the national poll on children's health, and found that flu season could be worse as the nation is already dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.“We may see peaks of flu and COVID-19 at the same time, which could overwhelm the health care system, strain testing capacity and potentially reduce our ability to catch and treat both respiratory illnesses effectively,” Mott poll co-director Sarah Clark said in a release.Families least likely to not get the flu were those who didn't last year, according to the poll. About 96% of parents whose kids did get the flu shot said they intend to have their kids get it again.“Our report finds that even during the pandemic, some parents don’t see the flu vaccine as more urgent or necessary. This heightens concerns about how the onset of flu season may compound challenges in managing COVID-19," Clark said.“A key challenge for public health officials is how to reach parents who do not routinely seek seasonal flu vaccination for their child,” Clark added. “When getting a yearly flu vaccine is not a pattern, parents need to be prompted to think about why it’s essential for their child to get vaccinated.”The most common reason for kids not getting the vaccine, parents said, was concerns about side effects or the belief it isn't effective.“There is a lot of misinformation about the flu vaccine, but it is the best defense for children against serious health consequences of influenza and the risk of spreading it to others,” Clark says.14% of parents said they would not get their kids the flu shot because they are keeping them away from health care sites due to the risk of COVID-19 exposure. About 9% said their child is afraid of needles.Since 2010, the CDC said influenza has led to between 9 million and 45 million illnesses, 140,000 to 810,000 hospitalizations and 12,000 to 61,000 deaths a year.Kids younger than five, and especially those younger than 2 years old, are a high risk of developing serious flu-related problems.According to the poll, there were 1,992 responses from parents of children between 2-18 years old surveyed in August. 2237

A 29-year-old man who deliberately drove a car into a crowd outside Britain's Houses of Parliament has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, the Metropolitan Police in London said Saturday.Salih Khater of Birmingham, a Sudanese-born UK national, is scheduled to appear in court Monday, police said in a news release.Three people were hurt early Tuesday when the car collided with cyclists and pedestrians as well as police officers before crashing into barriers outside Parliament, police said. A man and a woman were treated in the hospital but were discharged, and another man was treated at the scene.Parliament was in summer recess, meaning the normally bustling center of British government was emptier than usual. 739

(KSTU) -- A woman who disappeared in Utah's Zion National Park before being found 12 days later is reportedly being investigated for fraud in connection to her disappearance. The Salt Lake Tribune reported the Washington County Sheriff's Office is looking into Holly Courtier's story after accounts of her rescue and how she survived with no food or water raised questions within the department. In the days following the rescue, Courtier's daughter -- who lives in San Diego -- said her mother hit her head and became disoriented in the park; while her sister, Jaime Strong, said Holly never drank from a nearby river because it was possibly toxic.Hearing the accounts after Courtier was able to leave Zion National Park with minimal assistance raised red flags to officials, according to a statement released by the Sheriff's Office."These inconsistencies raised some questions as to the authenticity of the events as reported to law enforcement," said Sheriff Cory C. Pulsipher in the statement. The Washington County Sheriff's Office says it has received "numerous tips" claiming Courtier made up the story as a way to make money through a GoFundMe account -- a theory that does not check out with the sheriff."At this point in the investigation, there has been no evidence to support the theory that the incident was committed intentionally as an effort to achieve financial gain."RELATED COVERAGE:-- San Diego woman’s mother missing in Zion National Park-- Hiker who disappeared in Zion National Park found-- Hiker's rescue leaves unanswered questions 1562

(KGTV) — State wildlife officials are warning people not to feed deer in Northern California to help control the outbreak of a fatal disease in the animals.Department of Fish and Wildlife officials say they have confirmed outbreaks of "adenovirus hemorrhagic disease" in deer across several Northern California counties, including Napa, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Tehama and Yolo counties. The disease is typically fatal to deer and can be spread by animals in close contact with each other. The virus is not known to affect humans, pets, or domestic livestock.Adenovirus hemorrhagic disease, or CdAdV-1, isn't new. In 1993-1994, an outbreak of the virus was reported in black-tailed deer and mule deer in 18 counties. Since that outbreak, the virus has been identified as the cause of sporadic and widespread hemorrhagic disease in deer in California and other western states. The disease causes excessive salivation (drooling or foaming at the mouth), diarrhea, regurgitation, or seizures in infected deer, however, those animals infected are often found dead with obvious symptoms, sometimes near water.Deer fawns are at the greatest risk of the disease, according to CDFW.Officials say feeding deer can cause the animal to gather and spread the virus to each other."Providing attractants for deer – food, salt licks or even water – is against the law for good reason," said Brandon Munk, senior wildlife veterinarian with CDFW’s Wildlife Investigations Laboratory. "Because these artificial attractants can congregate animals and promote the spread of disease, it’s particularly imperative to leave wildlife alone during an outbreak. There is no cure or vaccine for this disease, so our best management strategies right now are to track it carefully, and to take preventative measures to limit the spread."People can help officials track and study the disease by reporting sightings of sick or dead deer. 1909
