JUNEAU, Alaska — The U.S. Bureau of Land Management plans to hold an oil and gas lease sale for land in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge next month. The measure required two lease sales within seven years, with the first sale no later than the end of 2021.Conservation groups criticized news of the sale as rushed and based on environmental reviews that are currently being challenged in court as flawed. Conservation groups, the Indigenous Gwich'in people, and a coalition of 15 states have filed lawsuits challenging the environmental reviews.Alaska politicians say opening the area for exploration would boost oil production, create jobs and generate royalties.However, even if a lease sale is held, there are questions about which companies could afford to drill in the refuge.Just this week, Bank of America said they are ruling out financing for oil and gas development in the Arctic, including in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. They are the latest U.S. bank to publicly commit to not financing oil and gas development in the region.“There’s been misunderstanding around our position, but we have not historically participated in project finance for oil and gas exploration in the Arctic,” Larry Di Rita, the bank’s head of public policy and strategy in Washington, told Bloomberg.“But given that misinterpretation, we’ve determined that it’s time to codify our existing practice into policy.”Bank of America joins Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Citi and Morgan Stanley and nearly 30 major banks from around the world have committed to not fund oil and gas development in the Arctic. 2427

Jimmy John's is known for its "freaky fast" delivery, but one branch showed it can deliver a lot more in helping an ailing veteran.A woman thought she was calling a social worker to help her brother after his spinal surgery. Little did she know she had misdialed and called the sandwich shop in Columbus, Nebraska."The whole time I pretty much knew that she didn't know she was talking to someone from Jimmy John's. It didn't seem important to really bring it up, but I just wanted to make sure that she knew I was going to help her," said Jason Voss, the night-shift manager at the Columbus Jimmy John's.Army veteran Greg Holeman, 48, was recovering from spinal surgery when he returned to his home last week. His sister, Lisa Nagengast, flew in to help get him settled at home.Just moments after she landed back home in Florida, Nagengast received a voice mail from her brother saying he was having severe pain in his left leg and couldn't stand up.Unsure if the US Department of Veterans Affairs would pay for Holeman's ambulance, Nagengast attempted to reach Holeman's social worker. As she frantically rushed through the airport to claim her luggage, Nagengast began explaining her brother's situation over the phone.Voss didn't want to leave the store, so he got Zach Hillmer, one of the drivers, to go pick up Holeman and take him to the emergency room.Once Hillmer called Nagengast back to find out more information about her brother, it became clear to her she was not talking to a social worker."I was kinda gracefully [trying to] back out of everything that had happened at that point," Nagengast told CNN. "He was like, 'No no no, I will take him to the hospital. You give me his name and his address and make sure that he gets in the car with me, and I will get him where he needs to go.'"After the phone mix-up, Nagengast thanked the employees for stepping up. "I cannot say thank you enough to Jason Voss and Zack (sic) Hillmer ... there are not enough words to express my gratitude." Nagengast wrote in a Facebook post?Saturday."I'm famous for calling a wrong number, but Zach and Jason need to be famous because they did an amazing act of kindness," Nagengast told CNN.She isn't the only one praising the two workers. James Shaw never intended to become a hero when he walked into Waffle House on Murfreesboro Pike in Antioch, Tennessee at 3 a.m. on Sunday, but the 29-year-old single father likely saved dozens of lives when he managed to wrestle a loaded AR-15 from the hands of a gunman.James and his friend BJ McMurry had been at a bar nearby on Saturday night. They had initially stopped at the Waffle House on Bell Road but decided it was too crowded and instead drove to the Murfreesboro Pike restaurant, not knowing the chaos and carnage that would soon unfold.For James, a Tennessee State University graduate, the gunfire at first sounded like dozens of plates falling from behind the counter. As the front windows began shattering though, he knew something was wrong."It was pretty chaotic," James said a few hours after the shooting.As Metro Police said Travis Reinking was unloading round after round inside the busy restaurant, James noticed the gun jammed and saw an opportunity to act."It wasn't a process of thinking, it was more of a now... I have to do this now or it's not gonna be. If I let him reload this weapon there won't be another chance. It was like shooting fish in a barrel," James recalled.James Shaw managed to wrestle the weapon from the hands of Travis Reinking. The barrel of the gun was so hot it singed the skin off of his hands and fingers. He would later be taken to the hospital and treated for third degree burns.Metro Police said his actions saved the lives of countless patrons inside the Waffle House but James is still focused on the four people who didn't make it out."I'm sorry I couldn't get to them any faster. (KGTV) — City crews have started emergency repairs to an unstable cave located underneath a busy La Jolla street.Coast Blvd. was closed late Thursday after experts found weaknesses in Cook's Crack, a sea cave underneath Coast Blvd. near Cave St."We're starting to see above ... the looser, weaker material. That's a trigger right off the bat that, 'Oh my God, we don't have the beefy rock bridging across anymore. So that's what got out attention," said James Nagelvoort, city public works director.RELATED: La Jolla streets closed for emergency stabilization of Cook's Crack caveThe discovery came as crews prepared to repair Coast Blvd. Assessors discovered that if too much weight is above the cave or heavy seismic vibrations hit the area, the road could collapse, according to the city.A crew from Texas was called to lead the project, driving overnight to La Jolla Friday.Crews plan to first fill the cave's cracks with an eco-friendly polyurethane mix to strengthen the dirt. The next phase will be to clear out all of the water and fill the cave with a concrete mix.Construction is expected to last about six weeks, closing parts of Coast Blvd. and Cave St.Cook's Crack is located in the area between La Jolla Cove and the popular Cave Store. The strip of road leads down to seaside restaurants and parking for many tourists and residents.The project required the city to quickly close the road before locals realized what the issue was, though businesses and residents were allowed to pass through the area Friday."They said there's been some shift in the road itself," David Heine, owner of nearby Brockton Villa Restaurant, told 10News. "The busiest two weeks of summer, literally ... Obviously safety's the number one concern for any city, and we respect that." 1799
