Food banks across the country are reporting a dramatic increase in people needing help. Many organizations are reporting the number of people they're providing food and services for have quadrupled, a continued effect of the COVID-19 pandemic."Prior to COVID, we had about 85 families that would come to our client choice pantry. And now since COVID, we’re averaging about 385 a week so it's been a huge influx of new clients," says Jacob Granados, the director of purposeful engagement for the Place of Forsyth County in Georgia. Some of their clients have never had to rely on help from food banks or non-profits before. Granados says the need since the start of the pandemic has not died down."I think it's important for people to understand that they are not alone," says Granados.Danah Craft, the executive director of the Georgia Food Bank Association shared a heat map, showing the increase in food insecurity in 2020 compared to 2019. Some areas of Georgia that rely heavily on tourism have seen their food insecurity rates double."We believe that we will be at sustained elevated levels for 12 to 18 months. We are here for the long haul. We are part of these communities and we are here to respond but what we don't know is what will happen this winter. We don't know how long we’ll need to sustain this response," says Craft. In California, Community Services and Employment Training, or C-SET, provides groceries and meals to families. C-SET used to deliver 300 meals monthly to seniors. That number is now up to 1,400."Then for rental assistance typically I would see maybe 150 applicants for emergency food and shelter services. We are probably close to 900," says CSET's Director of Community Initiatives, Raquel Gomez Collins.C-SET has joined with their local health and human services agency as well as other non-profits in their area to provide as many services as possible to residents who need it. Gomez Collins says sometimes it's not just about having the funding to buy the food but identifying where and how to get it."We are competing with larger cities for that food so it's being in line and ready to go when they give us a call and say, ‘Hey, we have four pallets of food and you can pick it up.’ It's having the access to trucks, it's having the access to manpower. All those things come into play now because of the competition for those resources," says Gomez Collins. Many organizations are thankful for all of the generous donations they receive and are now preparing for the upcoming winter."We are not planning for our numbers to drop anytime real soon. We are making preparations even now for Thanksgiving to get 500 Thanksgiving meal boxes ready. We anticipate that this need will be here," says Granados. 2748

Following Bill Clinton’s sharp rebuke of President Donald Trump Tuesday evening, Barack Obama gave his sharpest scolding of Trump since inauguration day.In Obama’s speech he delivered Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention, Obama lashed Trump for his approach to the presidency.“I did hope, for the sake of our country, that Donald Trump might show some interest in taking the job seriously; that he might come to feel the weight of the office and discover some reverence for the democracy that had been placed in his care,” Obama said.“But he never did. He’s shown no interest in putting in the work; no interest in finding common ground; no interest in using the awesome power of his office to help anyone but himself and his friends; no interest in treating the presidency as anything but one more reality show that he can use to get the attention he craves.”Obama, who was largely silent during the first three years of Trump’s tenure, has become more vocal during this election year. While generally avoiding direct shots at Trump, Obama has prodded Trump for his handling of a number of situations. But his speech Wednesday went as the sharpest reproach Obama has delivered on Trump.“Donald Trump hasn’t grown into the job because he can’t,” Obama said. “And the consequences of that failure are severe. 170,000 Americans dead. Millions of jobs gone. Our worst impulses unleashed, our proud reputation around the world badly diminished, and our democratic institutions threatened like never before.”Trump, who got word late Wednesday of Obama’s censure, responded in kind.“When I listen to this and see the horror that he left us, the stupidity of the transactions that he has made. Look what we are doing,” Trump said. Trump continued by boasting about building the border wall and improving the economy since Obama left office."“President Obama did not do a good job,” Trump added. “The reason I am here is because President Obama and Joe Biden, because if they did a good job, I would not be here. Probably if they did a good job, I would not have even run. I would've been very happy.” 2113

For the third time in a week, a suspicious package has been addressed to CNN. This time, on Monday morning, the package was intercepted in Atlanta, the home to CNN's worldwide headquarters. The package "was intercepted at an Atlanta post office," CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a memo to staffers. "There is no imminent danger to the CNN Center."The Atlanta Police Department said Monday morning that they responded to a call at 9:38 AM about a suspicious package at a post office near the CNN Center. The package appears identical to the other packages authorities say were sent by pipe bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc, who was arrested on Friday. The other two packages addressed to CNN were apparent mail bombs. The first package arrived Wednesday morning in the mailroom at Time Warner Center, home to CNN's New York offices. It spurred a five and a half hour long evacuation of the building. That package was addressed to former CIA director John Brennan, who actually works for NBC.The second package was addressed to both CNN contributor James Clapper, the former director of National Intelligence, and CNN. It was found Friday morning at a post office six blocks away. It wasaddressed to Time Warner Center. There was no immediate word from authorities on Monday about whether the suspicious package in Atlanta is linked to last week's wave of mail bombs.Among the other recipients were former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former US Attorney General Eric Holder, California Senator Kamala Harris, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and California Rep. Maxine Waters.Pipe bomb suspect Sayoc is due in court on Monday. As a result of Wednesday's package, all mail destined for CNN's US offices is now being screened first at off-site facilities. This means that Friday's package "would NOT have come directly to the TWC, even if it hadn't been intercepted first," Zucker said in a Friday memo.On Monday, following the interception of the suspicious package in Atlanta, Zucker said the same protocol would have applied in that incident."All mail, at all CNN domestic bureaus, is being screened at off-site facilities as of last Wednesday, so this package would NOT have come directly to the CNN Center, even if it hadn't been intercepted first," Zucker wrote. "Our screening process is working and we will keep you updated as we learn more." 2378

Former President George W. Bush said Sunday that he has extended congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on winning the 2020 presidential election, breaking with prominent members of his party in the process. In a statement released by the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the 43rd president said he is optimistic that Biden will help bring the country together."Though we have political differences, I know Joe Biden to be a good man, who has won his opportunity to lead and unify our country," Bush said in a statement. "The President-elect reiterated that while he ran as a Democrat, he will govern for all Americans. I offered him the same thing I offered Presidents Trump and Obama: my prayers for his success, and my pledge to help in any way I can."Bush also acknowledged President Donald Trump's intent to challenge the election results on allegations of massive voter fraud, which thus far have proven to be baseless."President Trump has the right to request recounts and pursue legal challenges, and any unresolved issues will be properly adjudicated," Bush said. "The American people can have confidence that this election was fundamentally fair, its integrity will be upheld, and its outcome is clear."By issuing congratulations to Biden, Bush — the only former Republican president currently living — has broken with the majority of top Republicans currently serving in government. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy have not yet publicly acknowledged Biden as President-elect, and several other prominent Republicans have publicly refused to declare Biden the victor despite projections from most major media outlets.Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan are among the few Republicans who have acknowledged Biden's projected victory."We must come together for the sake of our families and neighbors, and for our nation and its future," Bush said.Bush also congratulated America as a whole for setting records in voter turnout. Biden and Trump both received more votes in the 2020 election than any other presidential candidate in previous elections."The fact that so many of our fellow citizens participated in this election is a positive sign of the health of our democracy and a reminder to the world of its strength," Bush said. "No matter how you voted, your vote counted." 2408
