TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — Migrants approaching the U.S. border from Mexico were enveloped with tear gas Sunday after a few tried to breach the fence separating the two countries.U.S. agents shot the gas, according to an Associated Press reporter on the scene. Children were screaming and coughing in the mayhem.Honduran migrant Ana Zuniga, 23, said she saw migrants open a small hole in concertina wire at a gap on the Mexican side of a levee, at which point U.S. agents fired tear gas at them."We ran, but when you run the gas asphyxiates you more," she told the AP while cradling her 3-year-old daughter Valery in her arms.RELATED: Caravan marches toward US border in show of forceMexico's Milenio TV also showed images of several migrants at the border trying to jump over the fence. Yards away on the U.S. side, shoppers streamed in and out of an outlet mall.U.S. Border Patrol helicopters flew overhead, while U.S. agents held vigil on foot beyond the wire fence in California. The Border Patrol office in San Diego said via Twitter that pedestrian crossings have been suspended at the San Ysidro port of entry at both the East and West facilities. All northbound and southbound traffic was halted.Earlier Sunday, several hundred Central American migrants pushed past a blockade of Mexican police who were standing guard near the international border crossing to pressure the U.S to hear their asylum claims. They appeared to easily pass through without using violence, and some of the migrants called on each other to remain peaceful.RELATED: Woman with child injured while scaling border fenceThe migrants carried hand-painted American and Honduran flags and chanted: "We are not criminals! We are international workers!"A second line of Mexican police carrying plastic riot shields stood guard outside a Mexican customs and immigration plaza. That line of police had installed tall steel panels behind them outside the Chaparral crossing on the Mexican side of the border.Migrants were asked by police to turn back toward Mexico.More than 5,000 migrants have been camped in and around a sports complex in Tijuana after making their way through Mexico in recent weeks via caravan. Many hope to apply for asylum in the U.S., but agents at the San Ysidro entry point are processing fewer than 100 asylum petitions a day.Irineo Mujica, who has accompanied the migrants for weeks as part of the aid group Pueblo Sin Fronteras, said the aim of Sunday's march toward the U.S. border was to make the migrants' plight more visible to the governments of Mexico and the U.S."We can't have all these people here," Mujica told The Associated Press.Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum on Friday declared a humanitarian crisis in his border city of 1.6 million, which he says is struggling to accommodate the crush of migrants.U.S. President Donald Trump took to Twitter Sunday to express his displeasure with the caravans in Mexico."Would be very SMART if Mexico would stop the Caravans long before they get to our Southern Border, or if originating countries would not let them form (it is a way they get certain people out of their country and dump in U.S. No longer)," he wrote.Mexico's Interior Ministry said Sunday the country has sent 11,000 Central Americans back to their countries of origin since Oct. 19. It said that 1,906 of them were members of the recent caravans.Mexico is on track to send a total of around 100,000 Central Americans back home by the end of this year.RELATED: 3488

This is typically one of the most exciting times of the year, with high school football getting close to kicking off the season.Unfortunately, COVID-19 sidelined football and a bunch of other sports."It's a concern," says Caledonia, Michigan, clinical psychologist Dr. Nicole Beurkens, "because surveys throughout this pandemic have shown that student-athletes, in particular, are showing rates of anxiety and depression that are steadily increasing and rates of physical activity that are decreasing."It's a combination that Dr. Beurkens says can cause some serious problems."People often underestimate how connected those two things are," she says, "But the research shows us over and over again that getting some form of physical movement, physical activity, or exercise in on a daily basis is critical for supporting our mental health, and that's especially true for children and for teens."So, with many sports in a timeout, Dr. Beurkens says parents should be looking for signs of mental health issues."I think that if parents start to notice that their child is withdrawing more and more, not participating in things that they used to participate in, withdrawing more from the family, getting a lot more irritable, maybe feeling more anxious about things, expressing more hesitation to do things that they were comfortable doing, those are signs that anxiety or depression may be an issue."She says keeping your kids active during this time is invaluable."For kids still to be involved in physical activities around weight training practice, many of the schools are working on how to safely have kids together to continue to participate in drill training, in working on things that they work during the season, even though they won't be competing. That's a great way to provide not only structure but also those relational kinds of opportunities."And above all else, Dr. Beurkens says, keep talking."Open communication is one of the things that really helps kids to work through this types of challenging situations. So, talking with them about how they're feeling, about the disappointment, about the anger, or maybe frustration they may be feeling, and give them a healthy outlet about communicating about that, is important."To contact Dr. Nicole Beurkens click here. This story was first reported by Mike Avery at WXMI in West Michigan. 2354

TORONTO — Canada is introducing a contact tracing smartphone app that will notify Canadians of exposure to the new coronavirus.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the app will be voluntary and that if someone tests positive, other users who have the app and have been in proximity will then be alerted they’ve been exposed to someone who has tested positive.Trudeau says that the government will not collect any data from the app and users won't need to enable location services in order to use it.Governments around the world have been turning to smartphone technology to help battle fresh virus flare-ups as they ease lockdown restrictions. But technical problems and privacy concerns have dogged the development of virus tracing apps. 744

Three UCLA basketball players -- including LiAngelo Ball, brother of Lakers guard Lonzo Ball and son of Big Baller Brand founder LaVar Ball -- could be facing significant prison time if convicted of shoplifting in China, according to a report Tuesday. The trio has been released on bail, Sports Illustrated reported. On Tuesday, ESPN reported Ball and fellow UCLA freshmen Cody Riley and Jalen Hill were arrested in UCLA on charges of shoplifting. UCLA is in China to play its season-opening game against Georgia Tech in Shanghai on Friday."The players are being questioned about stealing from a Louis Vuitton store that is located next to the team's hotel in Hangzhou, where the Bruins had been staying before moving on to Shanghai on Wednesday," ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported.Yahoo Sports contacted a lawyer familiar with the Chinese legal system who said each player could face 3 to 10 years in prison if convicted of shoplifting.Another individual familiar with Chinese law told Yahoo Sports that "Chinese prosecutors enjoy a 99.2 percent conviction rate."Ball, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, followed in his brother Lonzo's footsteps by committing to play college basketball at UCLA. Lonzo was selected by the Lakers with the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. 1310
