NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - Firefighters responded to flames burning roughly 31 cars in National City Tuesday.The fire was reported about 12:45 p.m. at 3131 Hoover Ave., northeast of Interstate 5 and SR-54. Flames were burning vehicles on a private lot, the California Highway Patrol reported. MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – More than 150 officers with the Minneapolis Police Department have started the process of filing physical and mental disability claims, with a majority saying they’re suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).The law firm representing many of the officers, Meuser, Yackley, and Rowland, made the announcement Friday, saying the events following the death of George Floyd have “pushed many officers to their breaking point.” Those events include the burning of the department’s third precinct.The law firm’s founder, Ron Meuser, Jr., wrote in a statement that many of the officers he represents were at the third precinct the day and night it was abandoned during the protests over Floyd’s death.“Officers were taking such extreme steps as writing final notes and texts to loved ones – fearful they wouldn’t make it home, and some saying they felt they needed to reserve their last bullet rather than being beaten to death,” wrote Meuser.The attorney says he’s seeing PTSD symptoms of officers with highly diminished capacity to live and socialize, extraordinary rates of divorce, and alcohol dependency to cope with their trauma.“It is an emotional crisis that cannot and should not continue,” wrote Meuser.The law firm says the number of officers claiming to have suffered PTSD over the past six weeks accounts for about 18% of the department’s 850-person force.“The men and women in public safety who give their heart and soul to serve Minneapolis and keep it safe deserve to have Minneapolis leaders to step up and supporting them,” wrote Meuser. “Instead of spending time plotting the dismantling of the force, let’s come together to improve community trust and work towards a safer city for all.”The city’s police department is facing intense scrutiny after now-former officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck for several minutes until the man lost consciousness and later died.Chauvin and three other officers involved have been fired and persistent protests across the country led prosecutors to swiftly charge them. More than 120 people have been sickened since mid-May reportedly from bagged salad sold in Midwest grocery stores.Interviews with these people led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to connect the illnesses with certain bagged salad mixes containing carrots, red cabbage and iceberg lettuce sold at ALDI, Hy-Vee and Jewel-Osco stores in several Midwestern states.As of June 22, 2020, a total of 122 people with laboratory-confirmed Cyclospora infections associated with this outbreak have been reported from 7 states: Illinois (30), Iowa (54), Kansas (1), Minnesota (13), Missouri (7) Nebraska (8), and Wisconsin (9). Of the 122 reported illnesses, the CDC says 19 people have been hospitalized.Symptoms of Cyclospora include diarrhea, loss of appetite, cramping, bloating, nausea, fatigue, vomiting and low-grade fever. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Joseph Webster was in his 20s when he was convicted for a first-degree murder he didn't commit. At 41 years old, the father of four is readjusting to his newly granted freedom.Webster was released on Tuesday after a Davidson County judge ruled to vacate his murder conviction. New DNA evidence and key witnesses with different accounts of the incident helped solidify the decision.It's the first time a person was exonerated of murder because of his innocence in Nashville, according to attorney Daniel Horwitz."It's unbelievable but believable," Webster said. "The truth will set you free. I just didn't know when."Webster was sentenced to life in prison 15 years ago for the beating death of Leroy Owens in 1998. Horwitz helped uncover new evidence alongside the Davidson County Criminal Review Unit that points to a different suspect.Webster always maintained his innocence and never wavered from his hope that one day he'd get out of prison."It's a rare entity within the district attorney's office. Wrongful convictions are fairly rare, but they do occur," Horwitz said.In early 2019, Davidson County District Attorney Glenn Funk said he would reopen the case after new testing revealed that Webster's DNA was not found on the murder weapon. The only witness in the case allegedly changed her story several times, and at times the testimony pointed to a different suspect.In late October, Webster's attorney announced that Funk had vacated his sentence after a reinvestigation by the Conviction Review board, which cleared the way for Webster's possible release."The Conviction Review Unit no longer has confidence in the conviction of Mr. Webster," the motion stated. "We recommend Mr. Webster's conviction be vacated and the charges against him dismissed."With the victim's family in the courtroom, the state said there was no other option but to free Webster.Seconds after he could walk free, Webster's mother and children swarmed him with hugs and tears. He said he's been laying low and hanging out with loved ones who helped keep his strength over the years.Webster said there are others in his position without a support system. He eventually wants to his use experience to speak to teenagers about life in prison and to stay out of trouble.In the meantime, he wants to reconnect with society and heal from years of emotional, mental and physical stress."I just want to see the other side, and I just want to be happy and enjoy life," he said.He spent part of his day Thursday trying to get a driver's license with his attorney. Webster wants to rent his own apartment, get a commercial driver's license, and start a trucking business with his children.Horwitz said there are currently no plans to pursue restitution, but he has started a GoFundMe to help raise money for Webster.Money raised above the goal will be donated to the Innocence Project.
