GRETNA, Fla. — “He started screaming oh my god, oh my god!” Gayle Sweet recalled Thursday as she sobbed in pain while sitting inside of a pickup truck in the driveway of her Gretna, Florida Home. Her husband, Steve, is one of six confirmed fatalities, so far, in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael.Sweet says she and her husband were on the front porch of their mobile home when she heard what sounded like a freight train. Moments later, she says she watched as all the trees around them started leaning to the side. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — An FBI agent testified during a court hearing in Michigan that members of anti-government paramilitary groups discussed kidnapping Virginia’s governor during a June meeting in Ohio.Special Agent Richard Trask was part of the investigation that led to six men being arrested and charged last week with plotting to kidnap Michigan’s Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.Seven other men face state terrorism charges, in connection with the plot.Trask on Tuesday did not name Virginia’s Democratic governor, Ralph Northam, during his testimony in a federal courtroom in Grand Rapids. “They discussed possible targets, taking a sitting governor, specifically issues with the governor of Michigan and Virginia based on the lockdown orders,” Trask said.The agent said members of anti-government groups from multiple states attended the meeting and that attendees were unhappy with the governors’ actions to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.Ultimately, the plan was to kidnap Whitmer and "place her on trial" in a different location, the agent said.The hearing was held to review investigators’ evidence against five of the men involved, and whether they should be detained before trial. GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. humanitarian office says needs for assistance have ballooned to unprecedented levels this year because of COVID-19, projecting that a staggering 235 million people will require help in 2021.This comes as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and global challenges, including conflicts, forced migration, and the impact of global warming.“The humanitarian system again proved its worth in 2020, delivering food, medicines, shelter, education, and other essentials to tens of millions of people,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a press release. “But the crisis is far from over. Humanitarian aid budgets face dire shortfalls as the impact of the global pandemic continues to worsen. Together, we must mobilize resources and stand in solidarity with people in their darkest hour of need.”The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, expects a 40% increase in the number of people in need of such assistance in 2021 compared to this year.OCHA made the projections in its latest annual Global Humanitarian Overview on Tuesday, saying its hopes to reach 160 million of those people in need will cost billion. GENEVA (AP) — Russia has been banned from using its name, flag and anthem at the next two Olympics or at any world championships for the next two years. The Court of Arbitration for Sport’s ruling also blocks Russia from bidding to host major sporting events for two years. Russian athletes and teams will still be allowed to compete at next year’s Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing if they are not implicated in doping or covering up positive tests. The punishments are less than the four-year ban the World Anti-Doping Agency had proposed.One small win for Russia is the proposed team name at major events. The name “Russia” can be retained on uniforms if the words “Neutral Athlete” or “Neutral Team” have equal prominence, the court said.Still, the court’s three judges imposed the most severe penalties on Russia since allegations of state-backed doping and cover-ups emerged after the 2014 Sochi Olympics.The case centered on accusations that Russian state authorities tampered with a database from the Moscow testing laboratory before handing it over to WADA investigators last year.
