Juror: Pardoning Manafort would "be grave mistake"— A juror who sat on the Paul Manafort trial said to would be a "grave mistake" if a presidential pardon came for the former Trump campaign manager."I feel it would be grave mistake for President Trump to pardon Paul Manafort," Paula Duncan, one of the jurors, said during an interview with Anderson Cooper. "Justice was done, the evidence was there and that's where it should stop."Duncan was one of the 11 jurors who convicted Manafort on five tax fraud charges, one charge of hiding foreign bank accounts and two counts of bank fraud. Tourism spending in Oceanside set a record in 2017, with visitors shelling out 1 million last year.The new numbers, from a study by Dean Runyon Associates, were announced at the city's 8th annual Tourist Summit."It’s an exciting time in Oceanside," says Visit Oceanside CEO Leslee Gaul. "We’re really going through renaissance here."The city has had seven straight years of growth in tourist spending. The numbers in 2017 were 10.1% higher than 2016. Employment in the industry is also growing steadily. Tourism supports more than 3,300 jobs in Oceanside, and jobs in that sector have had averaged a 5.1% increase since 2010.Tourists spent 0 million on hotel rooms in 2017. That's up 11% from the year before, and it's twice the amount they spent in 2010. That gave the city million in Transient Occupancy Taxes, money that goes directly into the city's general fund to pay for city services, infrastructure, parks and more.Gaul thinks more people are coming to Oceanside because the city offers a more laid-back version of the Southern California lifestyle."We’re still one of the classics, Southern California beach communities," she says. "We really have what appeals to visitors today. They’re looking for that local, authentic experience and I think being slow to grow over the past few years has really been a benefit to our community."Local business owners say the increase in tourists is helping them expand as well. Arthur Escobar owns Oceanside Boat Rentals. He says business is so good, he's already bought two new boats for this summer season. He expects to buy two more by the end of the summer. He's also hiring 7 or 8 more employees for the season."This is a nice, friendly town," says Escobar. "There's no hustle and bustle, The beach here is incredible, three miles of big sandy beaches, you don’t get that most places."The study also showed a significant increase in spending at local restaurants. Gaul thinks that's part of what's fueling the city's renaissance. "There have been dozens of new restaurants opening in the last few years, and we have more on the horizon," she says.There are also more hotels planned, including a pair of new properties near the iconic Oceanside Pier. One will be a resort-style hotel with 226 rooms. The other is a boutique-style hotel that will have 160 rooms and incorporate a renovation of the Top Gun house. 2410
Three people are dead after a medical helicopter crashed in northern Wisconsin, the Associated Press reported. The Oneida County Sheriff's Office told AP the helicopter went missing on Thursday night and was found in Hazelhurst, which is about 150 miles northwest of Green Bay. 296
Through music, New York City's "Hip Hop Public Health" is creatively reaching underserved communities. Using a variety of campaigns and health-related topics, they're not only getting local and national interest, they're getting noticed around the world. Their most recent release has to do with salt and uses a popular song from the 90s.You might recognize the song and tune, but this time, instead of "Let's Talk about Sex," "Let's Talk about Salt" stars the Grammy winning Cheryl "Salt" James from the musical group Salt-N-Pepa. The song is focused on preventing hypertension, which has a lot do with salt.“The reality is most people consume way too much salt. It’s ubiquitous in the American diet,” said the "Hip Hop Doc," who is also known as Dr. Olajide Williams. “I still haven’t fully embraced it but it's a fun name and whatever I can do to further the cause to inspire young children to be healthy, I’d embrace any moniker for that."Dr. Williams is a neurologist, public health expert, a professor at Columbia University, and chief of staff of neurology at Columbia University. As if that wasn't enough on his place, he's also the founder of Hip Hop Public Health.“I started it because of the tremendous disparities and inequities that flood communities of color.”Dr. Williams says that to affect systemic change, we need a multi-layered approach, which has a lot to do with communication.“Information – adequate, effective information doesn’t penetrate a lot of our marginalized communities of color sufficiently enough, effectively enough to enable, ignite and inspire behavior change,” said Dr. Williams, who also says there are often problems with the credibility of the messenger.Dr. Williams developed a model in which hip-hop icons deliver messages. People are drawn to the music which then connects them to the information. Hypertension prevention is just one of their missions. They've promoted inclusion and fought childhood obesity with Special Olympics.This past spring, they released "20 Seconds Or More" to empower youth with accurate information about COVID-19. CEO and Executive Director of Hip Hop Public Health, Lori Rose Benson, says “we’re hearing from schools all around the country, in fact all around the world, about how habits are changing.”Benson says their handwashing song was used at an international school in India.“We have a very strong infrastructure in terms of connecting with school communities. We work very closely with school districts all around the country, from New York City to Seattle to West Palm Beach, Florida, and Boston.”All of the resources are free, and their reach is crafted towards the platforms in which youth would engage. That includes things like social media websites and YouTube.According to a 2017 statistic from the American Heart Association, African Americans were 20% more likely to die from heart disease and African American women are 60% more likely to have high blood pressure. And affecting change, Dr. Williams says, starts with our youth.“We know that knowledge is power and when you’re empowered by knowledge, you can change your behaviors and operate a certain way and sometimes these behavior changes are the difference between life and death.”These efforts are culturally tailored to make a difference, which will hopefully have a huge impact on all of our futures. 3359
There's some misunderstanding about medical exemptions to wearing masks.A legal expert tells us the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) makes it so businesses must make reasonable accommodations to everyone. The key word there is reasonable.“The problem with what's going on right now and some of the things that have been going around the internet, is that the advice, kind of spurious advice that's being put forth is to use the provision for reasonable accommodation as a sword rather than as a shield,” said David Tarrien, an associate professor at WMU-Cooley Law School.Tarrien says the conditions that qualify as a mask exemption have a smaller scope than many realize. For example, he says asthma patients likely do not fall under that scope. But later stages of pulmonary respiratory disease, emphysema, or a serious mobility issue can be "legitimate" reasons.Furthermore, you could face repercussions for lying.“If they're claiming that they have a disability and they don't have a disability, if that is found out, then there are criminal and civil penalties for that,” said Tarrien.As for privacy concerns, Tarrien says store employees are allowed to ask customers why they're not wearing a mask. If you refuse to answer, they may refuse entry.Even if you give a legitimate reason to not wear a mask, you may still be refused entry. That's because the ADA does not apply if there's a “direct threat” to someone's health or safety.Tarrien says HIPPA privacy laws also do not apply in this kind of situation.
