SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society released a series of tips to help keep pets safe this holiday season."With the bustling holiday season upon us, San Diego Humane Society reminds pet owners to consider their pets' safety when decking the halls," an SDHS release said. "Holiday decorations, seasonal plants and festive treats can sometimes be harmful for pets."Some of the tips to keep in mind this Christmas:-- Sharing holiday goodies with animals can be dangerous. Too much fatty or rich food can lead to digestive problems. Some foods, such as onions, grapes/raisins and chocolate can be toxic-- Ask guests not to share food with pets. They may mean well, but it is important to remind them of the potential dangers. Prepare sealed snack bags in advance and let guests use those treats instead of sharing from their plates-- Christmas trees can be hazardous, particularly for climbing cats, so make sure the tree is secure and preferably in a corner-- Dangling tree ornaments can seem like great toys to cats and dogs. Keep dangerous ornaments such as glass and tinsel -- which can be a choking hazard -- on high branches, out of the reach of little paws. Cords from lights should be taped down or otherwise secured to prevent pets from chewing on them-- Keep an eye on items under the tree. Don't let pets drink water from the base of a live tree as it may be stagnant and contain bacteria. Ribbons and bows can be a choking hazard and any packages filled with edible gifts are likely to be discovered-- A number of holiday season plants are toxic or can cause digestive upset to pets if nibbled or eaten, including amaryllis, Christmas cactus, Christmas rose, evergreens, holly, ivy, juniper, lilies, mistletoe and poinsettias. Be sure all plants are kept out of reach of pets-- Burning candles should be placed high, out of any pet's way. A dog's tail wag or a cat's curiosity could be devastating. Homes with fireplaces should use screens to avoid accidental burns-- Pets can get stressed with noise and activity. Give a pet a quiet, secure place with a bed and their favorite toys to escape the commotion. Put food, water and a litter box for cats in that space-- Holiday distractions may make it easier for pets to escape through open doors. Keep pets safely indoors and always make sure they're wearing current ID tags with a phone number and that their microchip information is up to date-- Pets thrive on routine and increased activity during the holiday season can upset that routine. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - One of nine servicemembers killed last month when an amphibious assault vehicle sank in the ocean near San Clemente Island was laid to rest Friday at Miramar National Cemetery.Lance Cpl. Chase D. Sweetwood, 18, was among those killed in the July 30 maritime training mission when the vehicle they were in took on water and sank.Family members say the Portland resident was born in San Diego and grew up in Chula Vista, and died one day before his 19th birthday.Sweetwood was honored during a Friday morning funeral that included military honors and a procession from the Patriot Guard Riders.Eight Camp Pendleton-based Marines, including Sweetwood, and a Navy sailor died in the mishap. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Prior to today's San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl, the Port of San Diego will host the annual Solar Turbines 5K run/walk and the Holiday Bowl Parade along Harbor Drive.The Port will host the 24th annual Solar Turbines 5K run and walk at 9:45 a.m. and the parade at 10 a.m. Participants in the 5K will run and walk from the corner of Harbor Drive and Ash Street to Ruocco Park. The parade will begin in front of the County Administration Building and process south down Harbor Drive to its intersection with Pacific Highway.According to Port officials, the parade will include 29 giant balloons, 10 marching bands and multiple floats and drill teams. The marching bands from Northwestern University and the University of Utah, the two teams playing in the Holiday Bowl, will perform during the parade."The Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade is one of the Port's signature events, bringing approximately 100,000 spectators, including many from out of state, to the beautiful San Diego bayfront," said Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Rafael Castellanos. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The name of the 46-year-old Ramona resident killed in a predawn shooting in his hometown was released by authorities today.A resident of the 600 block of Pine Street in the rural community southeast of Escondido heard a gunshot and found Mario Velazquez Cardoso mortally wounded in front of a neighboring home about 5:45 a.m. Thursday, according to sheriff's officials.Paramedics took Cardoso to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.An arrest has not been made in the killing, sheriff's Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian near a Logan Heights intersection.The crash happened around 8:50 p.m. Monday near the intersection of 25th Street and Imperial Avenue, east of Interstate 5 and south of state Route 94, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.A man, whose age was not immediately available, was walking westbound in the left-turn lane of Imperial Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle heading eastbound on Imperial, Buttle said.ABC 10News learned the victim was dragged several yards; the driver of the suspect vehicle, described as a silver or gray two-door sedan, fled the scene without stopping.No description of the driver was immediately available.The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the officer said.
