SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An emaciated dog found Friday in Bandy Canyon remains in critical condition but has shown some signs of improvement, the San Diego Humane Society's animal care staff reported today.A county resident brought the 2-year old male pit bull mix to the Humane Society's Escondido campus after finding him extremely dehydrated and cold, with pressure sores on his hips and knees. Humane Society veterinarians are working to feed and re-hydrate the dog slowly so as not to damage his body in its current fragile state.According to the organization, it could take between seven and 10 days for the dog to turn a corner and begin to recover. Humane Society staff are hopeful that will happen."When I found him he was extremely lethargic and weak,'' said Humane Society Law Enforcement Sgt. Lauren Monreal. "He's since received fluids, some electrolytes and ... even despite his horrible condition, he wags his tail.''The organization's Law Enforcement unit opened a felony cruelty investigation on Friday into the dog's abandonment and who may be responsible. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California Highway Patrol officers arrested fewer people than last year for suspected drunk driving in San Diego County so far during the Christmas holiday enforcement period, the agency said today.CHP officers arrested 33 people in the county between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Sunday, an officer said. That's down from 40 arrests in the area at the same time last year.Statewide, the CHP arrested 639 people for suspected DUI violations Friday night and early Sunday, up from 604 in 2017.There were 20 traffic fatalities reported by law enforcement agencies across the state during the period -- including one in San Diego County. There were four fatalities reported statewide at this point in the Christmas holiday last year. 752

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An 18-year-old man was shot twice in the stomach during an armed robbery early Thursday morning in a Mission Beach parking lot, police said.Two 18-year-old men were in a car leaving a party at the Bahia Resort Hotel, 998 West Mission Bay Drive, when they were approached by two men on foot in a public parking lot on Gleason Road at around 12:30 a.m.One of the men on foot pulled out a gun and pointed it at the pair in the car while demanding items from them, San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims said. The victims got out of the car and the man with the gun stole a chain necklace from one of the victims.The other victim tackled the gunman and was shot twice in the stomach, the officer said.The suspects fled in an unknown vehicle and the victim who had his necklace stolen drove the gunshot victim to a hospital for treatment of his wounds, Heims said. The gunshot victim underwent surgery, but an update on his status was not immediately available.A detailed description of the suspects was not immediately available. 1061

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A parolee accused of sexually assaulting an 88-year- old woman at a Hillcrest nursing home just days after being released from jail for an unrelated drug offense was charged Wednesday with rape, elder abuse and other felonies.Lusean Arline, 48, was arrested Monday in connection with the alleged Oct. 27 sex assault at the Balboa Nursing & Rehab Center. Deputy District Attorney Scott Pirrello alleged that Arline entered the nursing home around 3 a.m. and was found completely nude on top of the victim in her bed. How Arline allegedly entered the facility remains under investigation, but Pirrello said it's believed he got in through an unlocked door.RELATED: 88-year-old woman sexually assaulted at Hillcrest nursing homeStaff heard the victim and her roommates screaming and entered the room, prompting Arline to flee the scene, the prosecutor said. The victim, who suffers from memory decline, sustained a fractured arm in the attack, according to Pirrello.Arline was identified as the alleged perpetrator through ``evidence left at the scene'' that was submitted to the FBI Combined DNA Index System, he said. Police then tracked down Arline with help from the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, SDPD Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - All administrative offices in San Diego will be closed Thursday for the Thanksgiving Day holiday, while public transportation around the county will largely run on limited Sunday schedules.The City of San Diego's Development Services Department will provide limited services on Friday.Curbside trash, recyclables and yard waste will not be collected Thursday for customers served by the city's Environmental Services Department. Thursday's normally scheduled collection will occur on Friday, and Friday's collection will occur on Saturday. Residents in other cities should check with their waste hauler for holiday service schedules.The Miramar Landfill will be closed Thursday.Torrey Pines, Mission Bay and Balboa Park golf courses will be open until 3 p.m. Holiday rates will apply. All San Diego skate parks will be open.All public buildings in Balboa Park will be closed, including the Balboa Park Activity Center, Botanical Building, Casa del Prado, Municipal Gym and War Memorial Building. Check with other individual museums and attractions for their holiday schedules.All city reservoirs will be closed. Chollas Lake will also be closed.Parking meters, time restrictions for parking on streets and yellow zones within San Diego will not be enforced. Red, white and blue zones are still enforced every day. Subscription passengers who still want service must call ahead of time to arrange their transportation.On Thanksgiving Day, MTS will allow a friend to ride free with a fare-paying customer on all MTS routes. On Saturday and Sunday, MTS allows up to two children -- age 12 and under -- to ride free with a fare-paying adult on all MTS routes.On Friday, all trolley lines and MTS urban and local bus routes will operate normal weekday schedules.
