The Trump administration’s new strategy for coronavirus testing puts much of the burden on states while promising to provide supplies such as swabs and material to transport specimens. The plan, which was delivered Sunday to members of Congress, has drawn harsh criticism from top congressional Democrats. They say the administration “still does not have a serious plan for increasing testing to stop the spread of the virus.” The 81-page document from the Department of Health and Human Services comes as the U.S. death toll from the pandemic is approaching 100,000. 580

The powerful tornadoes that plowed through Lee County in Alabama and killed at least 23 people left a path of destruction that looked "as if someone had taken a blade and just scraped the ground," the county sheriff said Monday. One of those tornadoes was an EF-4 with winds of 170 miles per hour, the National Weather Service determined on Monday afternoon. At daybreak on Monday, emergency crews and residents witnessed more of the aftermath of the twisters that Sheriff Jay Jones called "catastrophic," and the search was on for survivors and more victims. It appears that some people had only a five-minute warning Sunday afternoon before tornadoes ripped through the region.A tornado watch was issued for the area around noon. The first tornado warning for Lee County was issued at 2:58 p.m. ET, and the first reports of damage came just five minutes later, CNN Meteorologist Gene Norman said, according to National Weather Service data.It appeared that two tornadoes hit Lee County back-to-back within the span of an hour, Norman said.A warning for a second tornado was issued at 3:38 p.m. ET, with the first reports of damage coming 13 minutes later. At least a dozen tornadoes touched down in Alabama and Georgia on Sunday afternoon, according to the NWS.The National Weather Service recorded EF-3 damage in southern Lee County. That classification means the damage was severe, with winds of 136 to 165 miles per hour. How the destruction unfoldedTornado watch for Lee County issued around 12 p.m. ETTornado warning 2:58 p.m. ETFirst reports of damage 3:03 p.m. ETFurther damage reports 3:30 p.m. ETSecond tornado warning 3:38 p.m ETFirst reports of damage 3:51 p.m. ETMore damage reported 4 p.m. ETAlabama's deadliest since 2011The 23 deaths reported on Sunday marked the deadliest day for tornadoes in Alabama since the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham tornado that killed more than 200 people in 2011.The victims, including children, died in Lee County, Jones said. The remains of Maleah Davis have been identified, authorities said Monday.Located in Arkansas on Friday during a search, the remains now have been positively identified as those of the missing 4-year-old girl, the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences said. The cause and manner of her death are still pending, according to the forensic institute.Maleah was reported missing in early May by her mother's former fiancé, Derion Vence. Vence initially told police that Maleah had been abducted by a group of men -- but investigators found signs of decay in his car and blood evidence in his apartment.Earlier Friday, Houston police had said child remains found in a bag in southwest Arkansas might belong to Maleah. 730

There’s a new diet making headlines. It’s called the DNA diet, and company Profile Sanford is leading the way.The company offers what most weight loss memberships offer: meal plans, one-on-one coaching and food. It’s great for someone like Anna Lahowetz, who has been struggling to diet on her own. She was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes seven years ago and tried numerous diets to lose weight. However, she says nothing worked until she tried Profile Sanford’s DNA diet. "I am addicted to carbs,” Lahowetz says. “I love carbs."That’s where the company came in to help. They take a DNA sampling from the member to find out how well and how fast they break down carbohydrates.Amber Reed a nutrition coach for Profile Sanford says it takes six weeks to get results back."Basically, what it does is it takes the guessing game out of what you should put into your meal plan, what you should put into your body,” Reed explains. “You know specifically what your body needs for the carbohydrates."It sounds easy enough, but registered dietician Stephanie Thomson says not all diets are one size fits all."Any diet plan that’s telling you to cut out entire food groups, people need to be careful," warns Thomson.Profile Sanford DNA diet testing costs 9 to join and month to month.Thomson says a trip to the doctor might be cheaper. "Registered dieticians are often covered by health insurance and we can get the same results," she says.As for Lahowetz, she’s lost 15 pounds so far on the DNA diet. She says she’s gained her health back and is close to getting off her diabetes medication. If you are looking to lose weight for good, all three women agree to find something that works for you. 1704
