LAS VEGAS – Over the last 25 years, a Las Vegas woman has become a beacon of hope for midwestern kids with dreams of going to college. Christina Hixson’s scholarship sets aside class ranks and GPAs. Although she has no children and she never married, hundreds of young people look to the sharp 92-year-old with love, admiration and gratitude."I don't have a lot of money anymore, but I still give away," said Hixson.In 1995, she established an educational fund for Iowa high school students, awarding one-half college tuition scholarships to one student in each of the 99 counties in the state."We do not look for the honor students,” said Hixson. “We're looking for ordinary people to make their lives better."The fund is geared toward those who face extraordinary hardships with courage and fortitude, offering them a chance to study at Iowa State University in Ames."She's looking for the student who's had to work their way through high school and isn't a star student," said Allison Severson, Director of the Hixson Award Program at ISU. She’s looking for students like Jackie Fisher. "I was a terrible student in high school,” said Fisher. “I got really bad grades. I never did my homework because I just didn't care."Once homeless, Fisher broke away from a household that discouraged education. Next semester, she’ll be the first in her family to graduate college and not with just one degree, but two."I got the scholarship and it just kind of gave me the opportunity to actually go," said Hixson.ISU sophomore Cinestie Olson battled through depression and anxiety to become a Hixson scholar. "That was really difficult to go through so I just had to keep reminding myself you know keep going, you have college ahead of you, like you can totally change your life after this."Perhaps most interesting is that Hixson inherited the seed money for the foundation from her boss, businessman and philanthropist Ernst F. Lied. He died without heirs or instructions on what she was to do with the money."I hope he would be pleased with what we've done," said Hixson.A small box of notecards helps keep track of just how much money she's donated to a handful of colleges and universities. "We've given away 8,238,404," said Hixson.Hixson says faith in what these students will do with their gifts is why they were chosen. It seems like a new organic tampon company is breaking into the market every day. As far as medical research goes, there's mixed reviews on whether buying organic tampons, pads, and other hygiene products is the right thing to do. However, that hasn't stopped a lot of people from going organic anyways. Customer Jasmin Rosil said, "There is a huge movement for positive period conversation." Rosil is a buyer for the Turnip Truck, and she feels strongly that organic tampons are better."There has been a wide awareness of things like fiberglass in cotton tampons and pads which would otherwise aggravate the vaginal wall, it would actually make your period symptoms worse." Obviously companies dispute those findings, so we reached out to the medical experts at the Obstetrics & Gynecology office here in Nashville. They said they're excited that women now have more options, but so far, there's no medical research to say one way or the other if organic is better for your body.The trend, though, is still running strong.Rosil said after she began using the organic products, her cramps have lessened, and she feels better."A lot of the time we found that an organic options are just going to be a clean, simple, cotton product." Jefferson County Judge Jeff Branick confirmed that thousands of his county's residents remain evacuated on Thursday following a fire and explosion at an industrial plant Port Neches, Texas. The fire remained active on Thursday, one day after a pair of explosions at the plant rocked the town of Port Neches. The explosions could be felt from up to 30 miles away, and blew out windows near the plant. Branick said that the situation was improving on Thursday, but that "doesn't mean we shouldn't exercise great caution."A 4-mile radius was evacuated from the plant amid fears of further explosions. Branick told reporters on Thursday that officials plan to visit the site of the plant on Friday as residents spent a second night forced from their homes. Branick said that the fire at the plant wasn't being controlled, but officials were working to contain the inferno. "The firefighters are doing an incredible job for their community," Branick told reporters. Despite the size and scope of the explosions, only three people suffered injuries, and no fatalities were reported.Officials continue to monitor the air quality near the plant. The real-time air monitoring results continue to show no actionable levels above state and federal regulatory guidelines, officials said. TPC Group operates the manufacturing plant. The plant processes C4 hydrocarbons, producing butadiene and raffinate and stores MTBE. The incident began at a tank with finished butadiene. Butadiene is used in the production of synthetic rubber used for tires and automobile hoses.The plant employs 175 people, and roughly 30 were on site at the time of the first explosion.
