BEIJING/FUZHOU, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- A plane chartered by the Chinese government flew 14 Chinese fishermen illegally seized by Japanese authorities from Japan to the southeast China port city of Fuzhou Monday afternoon, after China's repeated solemn representations.The fishermen were detained after the trawler they were aboard collided with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol vessels near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea last Tuesday. The fishermen were illegally detained after a trawler they were aboard collided with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol vessels near the Diaoyu Islands last Tuesday."Our safe return is due to the work of Chinese society, including the Party, the government and compatriots from all walks of life," said Wang Guohua, one of the crew members.He said the Diaoyu Islands are Chinese territory and their detention by the Japanese authorities was illegal."For generations, we have fished in those waters and so how could they seize us?" he said.The trawler, which was "illegally detained by the Japanese side," also set off for home Monday morning, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that the Chinese government has dispatched a fisheries administration ship to the relevant waters to assist it.

BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China Merchants Bank said Friday its profit rose 57.4 percent to 20.59 billion yuan (3.07 billion U.S. dollars) in the first three quarters from one year earlier.The jump in net profit was mainly due to higher interest income, the bank said in its business report filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange.Also, total assets of the mid-sized lender had expanded to 2.36 trillion yuan by the end of September, up 14.10 percent from the end of 2009.Additionally, the bank's non-performing loan ratio was 0.64 percent, down 0.18 percentage points from the beginning of this year.Shares of the bank were down 2.41 percent at 14.57 yuan in Shanghai and down 1.13 percent at 21.95 HK dollars in Hong Kong Friday.

BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and Turkey voiced commitment here on Monday to make joint efforts to crack down on terrorism and separatism."China would stay firm on safeguarding its national interests relating to the national sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping.Xi made the remarks in his meeting with visiting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, according to a press release from Chinese Foreign Ministry.Xi also expressed his appreciation during the meeting for Turkey's support of China's efforts to combat the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces that threaten to sabotage China's unity.The "East Turkistan" terrorist forces pose threats to the development and stability of northwest China, Xi told Davutoglu, noting that China wants to step up cooperation with Turkey in this regard.A bomb attack on Aug. 19 in Aksu City in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region left eight people dead, including the two attackers, and 15 others injured.Chinese authorities believe the "three forces," an umbrella category for separatists, extremists and terrorists, are responsible for the attacks.Xinjiang -- with 41.5 percent of its population Uygurs, a large Muslim Chinese ethnic group -- is China's frontline against terrorism. HANGZHOU, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has urged members of the Communist Party of China (CPC) working in the country's non-public economic sector to work hard to make their companies into advanced and excellent businesses.The call was made by Li Yuanchao, chief of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, during a two-day study tour to Zhejiang Province, one of the regions where the non-public economic sector has been highly developed, on east China coast.The tour ended Friday.During his stay in Zhejiang, Li visited a number of non-public businesses in two cities of Huzhou and Hangzhou in order to gain a first-hand information regarding how CPC members in those ventures have been doing under a Party campaign which encourages CPC members to excel at their workposts.While addressing a symposium held Friday in Hangzhou, the provincial capity, Li said the non-public sector was "an important force for developing the socialist economy with Chinese characteristics."Li added that Party organizations and its members at non-public enterprises should try to ensure that their firms take a correct orientation of development.

TOKYO, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara said Tuesday that he will try hard to rebuild a "strategic, mutually beneficial relationship" with China.During a luncheon meeting at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan, Maehara said he will strive to mend ties with China as foreign minister.He also welcomed the agreement between Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Belgium Monday to resume talks between high-level officials of the two countries.Earlier in the day Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku expressed his hope for the improvement of Japan's relations with China."Promoting a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship and improving ties between Japan and China will be positive not only for the two countries but also for other Asian countries or countries around the world, especially for their economies," said Sengoku at a regular press conference in Tokyo.China-Japan relations have been soured recently after the Japanese Coast Guard illegally seized a Chinese fishing boat and detained the crew on Sept. 8 in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.Japanese authorities insisted on performing a so-called domestic judicial procedure against the crew despite strong protests from the Chinese government and public. The crew and the boat were released later.
