SPRINGFIELD, Va. — Virginia's largest school system is removing the name of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from one of its high schools in favor of the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis.The board voted Thursday to rename Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield, Virginia — a Washington, D.C. suburb — after the late congressman and civil rights leader.A news release posted on the school district's website says the new name will be effective for the 2020-21 school year."Rep. Lewis was a champion of the Civil Rights movement, and our Board strongly believes this is an appropriate tribute to an individual who is a true American hero," School Board Chair Ricardy Anderson said in a statement. "We will also honor his life's work by continuing to promote equity, justice, tolerance and service in the work that we do.""The name Robert E. Lee is forever connected to the Confederacy, and Confederate values are ones that do not align with our community," said Tamara Derenak Kaufax, a board member representing the high school's district. SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A construction worker was hit by a car and killed Wednesday morning on state Route 94 in Spring Valley.The crash was reported shortly after 12:10 a.m. on eastbound SR-94 near Avocado Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.ABC 10News learned the victim was a worker for Granite Construction, and he was working alongside other construction workers when he was struck.Cones had been set down on the roadway, allowing traffic to pass on the left while work was being conducted on the right side. However, some workers told ABC 10News a car traveling on the wrong side of the cones struck their co-worker.Witnesses said the victim was dragged about 40 feet before the car, a 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage, stopped.The 41-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The car's 24-year-old female driver remained at the scene for CHP questioning.The crash remains under investigation. The CHP said, "At this time, alcohol and or drugs are not believed to have played a factor in this collision."No other injuries were reported. 1073

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — A construction worker was killed in an accident at Monte Vista High School hours after the topping out of the school's new multi-use facility. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the accident happened just before 2 p.m.Deputies say the 30-year-old man fell from a beam attached to a 30-foot platform. Deputies and emergency responders performed first aid on the construction worker, but he later died after being taken to the hospital. A second worker was also injured and taken to the hospital, but their condition is unknown at this time, according to the school district. CA-OSHA is investigating the incident and crisis counselors will be made available at the school Thursday.
