SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans requested a record number of mail-in ballots for th 2018 general election, 1.2 million to be exact. Now, as tens of thousands arrive at the Registrar's office every day ahead of election day, new technology is helping make sure every ballot is processed and counted."This is our 144 pocket ballot sorter," says Registrar Michael Vu, showing off one of two brand new machines his office bought with this election in mind."After the 2016 election we said the mail ballot population is so great we need to invest in something that's even higher speed," says Vu.The new machine can process up to 44,000 ballots per hour, twice the number of the old machine. It can also sort them by city and council district. That comes in handy with an election as big as this week's."We have 326 contests on ballot, spanning 485 candidates, and 52 measures on there," says Vu.By late Sunday, the Registrar had already received about 500,000 mail-in ballots. That includes several thousand people who voted early in-person. Vu says he expects that nearly 70% of the people who vote in Tuesday's election will have done so through mail-in ballots. He thinks San Diego could get closer to 100% mail-in ballots in the near future."It's becoming ubiquitous," Vu says.Anyone who hasn't turned in their mail-in ballot yet can still do so, either at a drop off location around San Diego or at a polling place on Tuesday. To find a location, go to sdvote.com. 1474

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Youth sports leaders are holding a protest in front of the San Diego County Administration Building on Saturday to voice their concerns over the state’s regulations regarding games and competitions.Currently, under California's coronavirus restrictions, youth sports can practice, as long as six feet of social distancing can be maintained. Bob Turner is both Executive Director of Presidio Soccer League and President of the Southern California Youth Soccer Association and said the athletes should be able to play games. He said they have created safety plans, including spacing out the times of games and shortening games to avoid crowds, only allowing one parent for each athlete, and also requiring masks of all referees, parents, and substitute players. Turner said they’ve sent countless letters and filled out petitions to the state, but have not gotten a response. RELATED: County sends plan to resume youth sport practices to Gov. NewsomA spokesperson for San Diego County said the county has also been asked about plans for youth sports. They also asked the state and have not heard about what’s next.“This is small potatoes to them compared to a lot of the other things opening but it is our youth and what’s more important than our kids. We’re destroying these kids with what’s happening through the schools and now we’re taking this away. This is the only outlet some of these kids have,” said Turner.Turner added that he’s heard of some athletes traveling to other states that have more relaxed restrictions so they can play in games and tournaments.Turner said counties in California are planning to all hold protests to voice their concerns. He said any athlete is welcome at their protest Saturday, and hopes the unified voices will be heard by the state.“We need to bring awareness. We feel like nobody’s listening so we just have to get people to listen and do the right thing,” said Turner. The protest will be held at 10 a.m. 1972

"I think I'm a better sculptor than painter."But he's also working on a theme called "Starry Seas," which he brought to life in front of our 10News cameras."I thought, what if Vincent van Gogh, what if he painted underwater?" Wyland said as he plopped paint directly from the tube to the canvas. "It just gives it a really organic, really nice impressionist type feel."He said his childhood helped shaped his attitude toward conservation."It was the first Earth Day. Of course, Green Peace was coming along," Wyland recalled. "When I came to California and I saw the Pacific Ocean and I saw a grey whale on that I day, I knew that was my place, that was my role."To educate and inspire the next generation of artists, Wyland is leading a national challenge."We're doing a national Wyland art challenge. It's free to every school, every student," the artist said.
