BEIJING, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Sunday promised orphan students in the quake-hit Yushu new homes and schools while rescuers continue to battle altitude sickness in search of survivors."There will be new homes! There will be new schools!" the president, who arrived in Yushu to inspect relief work one day after returning from a shortened overseas visit, wrote in chalk on the blackboard of a makeshift classroom. The 7.1-magnitude quake which struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu Wednesday morning has left at least 1,706 dead, 256 missing and 12,128 injured, as of 10 a.m. Sunday.A woman collects her belongs in Gyegu Town, the quake-hit Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu, in northwest China's Qinghai Province, April 17, 2010. BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Commerce Tuesday made a cautious prediction for the outlook of the nation's foreign trade for the rest of the year amid the fragile global economic recovery. The rebound of China's overseas shipments in the first quarter can largely be attributed to the low comparison base of the same period last year, the commerce ministry report said. Moreover, uncertainty in the global market remains as high unemployment in European Union nations and low capacity-utilization in the United States may dampen consumption and investment, the report said.China is facing deteriorating trade conditions as trade protectionism is on the rise, the report added.China suffered 19 trade-remedy investigations in the first quarter, up 93.5 percent over the same time last year. The investigations, targeting Chinese products, involved trade worth 1.19 billion U.S. dollars, the report said. The report also said higher costs may squeeze domestic enterprises' profits as a result of raw material price hikes and rising labor costs.China's exports increased 28.7 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2010 after dipping 16 percent last year amid the global economic downturn, customs data showed.

BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Vice President Xi Jinping Monday told members and organizations of the Communist Party of China (CPC) they had strict responsibilities in restoring normal life in quake-stricken Qinghai Province and helping the survivors.Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the requirements at a meeting of senior CPC leaders in Beijing on Party building.Party members, officials and organizations responsible for civil affairs should make sure quake-affected people have enough food, clothes, drinking water and shelters, Xi said.CPC members, officials and organizations working in health-care fields should treat the injured and prevent disease outbreaks, while members working in education should work to resume school classes, Xi said.Other CPC officials and members in transport, electrical power and telecommunications should make efforts to repair infrastructure, and restore power, water supplies and road transport as soon as possible. He Guoqiang, head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, who was also present at the meeting, underlined disciplinary rules for quake relief work.

ZHENGZHOU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Indian President Pratibha Patil on Saturday visited an ancient Buddhist temple in central China that is believed to be the starting point for Buddhism's spread from India into China.Patil toured the White Horse Temple in Luoyang City, Henan Province, accompanied by the temple's abbot Shi Yinle, and inaugurated an Indian-style Buddhist hall as a gift to China.A Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) emperor ordered the construction of the temple in honor of two Indian monks and horses that carried Buddhist scriptures and Buddha statues from India to the then capital Luoyang in 67 AD.During Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to India in 2005, the two countries agreed to build the Indian-style hall in the temple to commemorate the long history of bilateral ties. The 3,450-sq-m hall was funded by the Indian government and constructed by the Chinese side, the first of its kind outside of India.Wang Zhizhen, vice chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top political advisory body, also attended the inauguration ceremony.Following the visit, Patil left Henan for the ongoing World Expo in Shanghai, the last leg of her week-long state visit to China.During her visit, the two sides agreed to boost cultural exchange and people-to-people contact.
