SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While many holiday events will go on this season despite the pandemic, one San Diego tradition is taking a break this year.The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, scheduled for Dec. 13 and 20, has been canceled this year. Organizers said the decision was made due to the rise in coronavirus cases."We are sad to announce that due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, this year’s San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is cancelled," a statement on the parade's website read. "We are disappointed that the parade cannot take place this year but we would like to do our part to minimize the spread of the virus. Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season. See you next year!"The parade, which was looking forward to its 49th year, routinely brings crowds of more than 100,000 San Diegans to the bay over two weekends to watch as nearly 100 boats sail through the bay, decked out in colorful lights and decorations."Our number one priority is safety and this year large crowds associated with the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights are not advisable due to the Covid-19 pandemic," said Parade Chairman Larry Baumann. "We know how much our residents and visitors love the parade and this was a very difficult decision. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --A deported Army veteran who was pardoned by Governor Jerry Brown last year will now be allowed to become a U.S. citizen.Hector Barajas was honorably discharged but then deported to Mexico in 2004 after serving prison time for a shooting.  He had been waiting for news about his application for citizenship and learned Thursday that it had been approved. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for April 13 in San Diego. Barajas founded the Deported Veterans Support house in Tijuana and has become an advocate for the roughly 350 other men and women in the same situation. "We don't condone criminal activity, I'm not proud of what happened but I am proud of my service, and I take responsibility for what happened. I went to prison, paid my debt to society and I don't think we should be deported, " Barajas told 10News via Skype Friday morning. Although he's looking forward to starting a new chapter, he says he is very much committed to carrying on the mission he started to help bring other deported vets home.  1072

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two men wearing masks and gloves robbed a City Heights jewelry store Friday.One of the men jumped a display counter and confronted an employee of the Eclipse Jewelry Store at 4213 University Ave. just east of Interstate 15, police said.One man took jewelry from display trays and put it in a bag while the second man pointed a gun at the employee.The owner told 10News the men got away with about ,000 worth of mostly gold chains. He also said he thought perhaps the men had been in the store before since they seemed to know exactly what they wanted. Both men ran off and were last seen getting into a silver colored late model Toyota or Honda heading east.No one was injured in the robbery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With indoor dining shutdown, local restaurants are relying on takeout orders to stay afloat.Curbside pick-up, with a holiday flair, has been the specialty of the house at Parc Bistro and Brasserie in Bankers Hill. The service has also helped the eatery stay alive. In true holiday spirit, customers will see Santa and his Christmas elves deliver their food right to their car."If we could just dress up a little bit, and feel good about it, we can spread that positive energy in these tough times," says restaurant general manager Samantha Scholl.Scholl calls the last nine months devastating and an emotional roller coaster. She had to layoff close to 30 of her staff since March "We've had to pivot and change, and then we had to shut down and re-open. But we are grateful because we've had such strong support from our community," said Scholl.And since there is no dining in, Parc Bistro is offering curbside holiday packages, of which they have sold out all 250."The community has been behind us since the beginning and especially this last year which has been incredibly tough," Scholl says.The community has been behind Parc Bistro, and Scholl has been behind her staff. "I did another holiday relief fund through GoFundMe. My goal is to raise ,000 and I'm at about ,000 right now.
