SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several residents have reported receiving calls from San Diego Superior Court demanding money for pending court cases or face arrest.The scam has been reported by several members of the county Hispanic community, according to court officials. The caller says the potential victim has a pending case and that they must deposit money into a bank account or an arrest warrant will be issued.Scammers are using software to mask their number, so the ongoing calls will display the official court phone number in Caller ID."The Court would like to remind the public that it will not demand money over to phone to clear up cases or dismiss any warrants. When in doubt, immediately hang up and call the Court on your own," a release from San Diego Superior Court said.Law enforcement officials also recommend hanging up and calling authorities if scammers become aggressive over the phone. 908

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month. as it is the second most common type of cancer in men. Now one simple way to reduce the risk, is to eat a healthy diet. So in the month of September, the Prostate Cancer Foundation has a simple challenge, to eat 30 healthy foods in 30 days. They are calling it the "Eat It To Beat It Challenge." Prostate cancer can be silent, with no symptoms at all, and that was the case for Rancho Bernardo resident Patrick Sheffler. Always active, he spent a lot of time running marathons and even the Spartan Race, but that didn't make him invincible."I was probably the last person you would ever think would have come down with any disease or any kind of cancer." 730

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s homeless crisis is an ongoing concern but programs, nonprofits, and schools are working to make sure people find shelter. When students arrive at Monarch School, there’s no telling what they might need. The staff is prepared. “We have four showers on campus. We open at 6 a.m., we have breakfast…we have a clothing boutique,” said CEO Erin Spiewak. Everything a child needs to prepare for the day is available because students don’t have a place to call home. “They're either living in a hotel or motel in one of our downtown shelters they're in a car or on the street.” Roughly 23,000 school-age children in San Diego County are homeless, according to Spiewak. Monarch serves about 300 of them. “The one thing that becomes stable for them is Monarch School; coming to the same school everyday, seeing the same friends, seeing the same staff becomes a ritual and a habit where they now have an environment where they feel safe and secure,” said Spiewak. In addition to meeting students’ physical needs, the school also to address students’ emotional well-being by providing therapists on and off site. The ultimate goal is making sure students get a quality education. “We know that the lack of a high school diploma is a big indicator of adult homelessness,” Spiewak said. “We have numbers between 70 to 90 percent of our students are graduating, so we know that with this population our success in getting them to that finish line is imperative to ensure they're not becoming homeless adults.” Homeless adults draw the attention of San Diego City Council member Chris Ward, the chair of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless. Ward says one of the most effective ways of helping people is through programs that intervene before they end up on the streets. “It’s far more cost effective to help people stay housed rather than have them fall in and have their own individual circumstances become more complex,” Ward said. While bridge shelters like the large tents downtown have proven effective in getting a roof over peoples’ heads quickly, Ward says the ultimate solution is simply more affordable housing. “We have to work on the permanent solutions. Housing construction and new development takes a long time. We have to find new resources to fund that and make that happen,” Ward said. Ward wants voters to approve a housing bond to fund more projects. “We’ve done all of our homework; we know what the needs are and if we all agree this is the way to move forward, hopefully we'll have more to work with in the years ahead,” said Ward. When it comes time to build more housing, nonprofits turn to another nonprofit: Home Aid. The group builds or renovates facilities at below-market rate. In Escondido, Home Aid partnered with Interfaith Community Services on a facility for veterans who have been discharged from the hospital and have nowhere to go. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Helix has new FDA Emergency approval for its COVID-19 test that will make getting a test easier.The test is now approved for self-administration and for asymptomatic people to take.That means testing sites can give more tests without having to increase their staffing levels."It simplifies the collection," says Dr. James Lu, the President of Helix. "You can do it without having to have another person watching you."The test is also much simpler than the traditional upper nasal swab, as it only requires the lower area of the nostril to be swabbed."It actually just goes into the anterior narrows of the nostril area, and you just rotate it five times in each nostril," says Dr. Lu."It can be totally done by yourself, is completely painless, and it takes less than 30 seconds."RELATED: University City lab switches gears to create COVID-19 testsHowever, unlike home-pregnancy tests or DNA swab kits, Dr. Lu says Helix's COVID test still needs to be done in a clinical setting, so medical professionals can report the results and advise patients after they get results."We still think it's essential to have a physician in the loop, particularly for those cases where you do have positives," says Dr. Lu. "Those patients do need to be reported, and also make sure they have the right guidance in terms of quarantine."The simpler, self-administered swab could also make people more likely to get tested since they don't have to go through the old way of testing, which involved a swab shoved all the way up their nasal cavity.More testing also means more people will know if they're sick even if they don't have symptoms. That will make it easier for businesses and schools to reopen in the future."We believe that accurate and easily available, fast turnaround testing is essential to controlling the disease," says Dr. Lu. "And it's essential for identifying individuals who are sick or potentially spreaders so they can quarantine."Helix plans to make 100,000 of the newly approved tests every day. Around 5,000 of them will go to San Diego testing sites. The rest will be sent across the country. 2144
