The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expressed concern on Monday as it released figures that show a significant portion of young Americans are at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. According to CDC findings, 1 in 4 young adults aged 19-34 and 1 in 5 adolescents aged 12-18 suffer from prediabetes. Those with prediabetes have elevated blood sugar levels, but have not reached the threshold to be considered diabetic. The report from the CDC stated that overweight young people were significantly more likely to have prediabetes. The report found that 25.7% of overweight adolescents had elevated blood sugar levels, compared to 16.4 of adolescents of normal weight. Those figures were even pronounced among young adults. 36.6% of overweight young adults were prediabetic compared to 16.6% of young adults with a normal weight. “The prevalence of prediabetes in adolescents and young adults reinforces the critical need for effective public health strategies that promote healthy eating habits, physical activity, and stress management,” said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, M.D. “These lifestyle behaviors can begin early in a child’s life and should continue through adolescence and adulthood to reduce onset of type 2 diabetes.”The CDC expressed concerns that young Americans with prediabetes face significantly higher cholesterol levels, systolic blood pressure, abdominal fat and lower insulin sensitivity than those with normal glucose tolerance, which increased their risk of type 2 diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases. The family of the Dayton, Ohio, shooter published glowing obituaries of both the gunman and one of the first casualties in the massacre -- his younger sister, 22-year-old Megan Betts.The obituaries were published Tuesday on the website for the Conner & Koch Life Celebration Home in Bellbrook, Ohio, but the remembrance for gunman Connor Betts was removed Wednesday at the family's request, according to the funeral home.Connor Betts' parents later updated the message on their son's obituary page."Stephen and Moira Betts apologize that the wording of the obituary for their son Connor was insensitive in not acknowledging the terrible tragedy that he created," the message said. "In their grief, they presented the son that they knew which in no way reduces the horror of his last act. We are deeply sorry."The obituary for Betts, who was killed by police after he took nine lives in the August 4 mass shooting, was shorter than his sister's. Both writeups encouraged people to donate to an ecology institute in nearby Yellow Springs instead of sending flowers.Friend who provided body armor faces chargesA now-removed page for the shooter also included 21 photos. They ranged from his younger days doing martial arts to more recent images of him drinking beer and smiling with family members. A Twitter account that appears to belong to him -- and whose bio proclaimed, "I'm going to hell and I'm not coming back" -- retweeted far left-wing and anti-police posts.Armed with a .223-caliber high-capacity rifle, Betts fired 41 shots in less than 30 seconds that night in Dayton, killing his sister as well as eight seemingly random bystanders, police said.In a statement following the shooting, the Betts family said they were "shocked and devastated" by what happened and were cooperating with police. The National Hurricane Center said late on Wednesday that a disturbance in the northern Gulf of Mexico is nearing tropical depression status. The storm, which will likely become tropical storm Barry on Thursday, has become better organized. Even as just a tropical disturbance, the storm system has already caused massive flooding in the New Orleans area. Parts of the area had nearly 9 inches of rain on Wednesday, with more to come through Saturday. The latest projections take the storm to the Louisiana coast as a hurricane. Latest forecast models put the storm on the coast sometime Saturday. The Department of Education has opened a preliminary investigation of institutions named in the Department of Justice investigation into admissions scams, documents obtained by CNN show.Eight universities -- Georgetown, Stanford, UCLA, the University of San Diego, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas at Austin, Wake Forest and Yale -- received letters informing them of the preliminary investigation and requesting written answers to questions pertaining to the Justice Department's investigation.The questions include the names of employees charged, students whose admissions have been mentioned in connection with the case, and all admissions records and policies since 2009.The letters say that "this preliminary investigation will examine whether there is evidence of any violation of the law or regulations governing the Federal student financial aid programs. "Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said last week that the department would review whether any regulations were violated in connection with the scheme.Prosecutors have charged 50 people, including 33 wealthy parents, for carrying out a scheme to cheat on standardized tests and/or bribe college coaches, who then helped the prospective students gain admission by falsely claiming they were athletic recruits.In a statement, DeVos called the alleged actions by the parents, some of whom allegedly paid more than million to secure admission, "disgraceful.""Every student deserves to be considered on their individual merits when applying to college and it's disgraceful to see anyone breaking the law to give their children an advantage over others," DeVos said.
