Former Arkansas high school teacher Jessie Lorene Goline, 25, is accused by law enforcement of having sexual relations with four high school students in 2016, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Goline was formally charged on Wednesday with one count of first degree sexual assault, according to online court records. The Democrat-Gazette reported that only one of the four students were under 18 at the time of the encounters. Authorities told the Democrat-Gazette that Goline allegedly had sex with two students she had taken to her apartment on the same day.In the affidavit, Goline believed one of the students was 18 but he was not. Three of the male students were from the Marked Tree School District, and one was from the East Poinsett County School District. They told authorities that they received text messages from Goline, and that their conversations became more sexual over time. Authorities learned of the alleged incidents in April when a parent threatened to “do bodily harm to one of their teachers.” That's when one of the parents came forward. Goline, who was released later on Wednesday, faces a judge in October.  1217

Former prisoners are helping former prisoners break in to college courses.  The Urban Scholars Union is a relatively new organization created by ex-cons for ex-cons looking to better themselves through education. USU’s President Cesar Garcia said they started 18 months ago at San Diego City College to help “justice impacted” students succeed. “[We want to] empower them and motivate them to be productive members of society,” said Garcia. “We’re not monsters that they make us out to feel and make us out to be,” said San Diego City College student Ryan Rising. “We’re humans that made poor choices.” Rising spent 15 years behind bars for carjacking and attempted extortion but will matriculate to Cal Berkley on a scholarship after earning his Associate’s at City.“I’m super proud of myself,” he said. Garcia, who served seven years for a list of crimes, said the USU provides a space for former prisoners to get help, guidance, and support. The organization recently expanded to Southwestern College and is working on helping students at Mesa and Grossmont Colleges. USU also recently received its largest donation to date.  Current prisoners at Donovan Correctional in Otay Mesa donated ,000 to USU for scholarships and grants for former prisoners. “It just goes to show you how we do look out for each other,” said Garcia. “We just need go out and advocate to erase all these stigmas,” said Rising. 1470

For students at Jackson Memorial Middle School in Ohio, Tuesday wasn't a normal day. When a seventh-grade student pulled out a gun and shot himself, students began to panic.  Airyonna Haggerty, who is a sixth grader at the school, described the moment teachers told her to get inside the classroom.The 12-year-old heard teachers screaming to get inside the classroom and the next thing she knew, she was hiding and crouching down with her fellow peers near the teacher's desk."I dropped everything. My phone, my chrome book, my book bag and me and my friends ran into the classroom and then we all hid. We were probably there for about 20 minutes," said Haggerty.The principal of the school knocked on the classroom door and told the students and teacher that everyone had to go to another class."We started gathering our stuff and went into the hallway. Then we went to go open the door and it was locked," said Haggerty. For 9-year-old Joey DeLeon, staying on track can be hard. His mom, JoAnn Lopez, would have to tell him several times to brush his teeth or use his puffer. So, when she heard about The Attention Arcade, a new game system that helps kids focus, she was immediately interested."I figured if it was something we could try and it would work and we could help other kids,” said Lopez. “If it does work, why not do it?”DeLeon is part of a beta test group for Brain Leap Technologies, the company that created the game system. The game comes with a black bar that attaches to your PC. It tracks the child’s eye movements and allows the child to control the game with his or her eyes."The eye movement system and the attention system share neurocircuitry," said Bran Leap Technologies CEO Jeff Coleman. "We are leveraging the eye-movement system. It’s really hard to pin down the attention system, but we leverage the fact that they’re connected to train attention through eye movements."In a new study done at the University of California San Diego that's backed by the National Institutes of Health, Coleman says they saw on average of 55 percent improvement in inhibitory control. That’s the skill you need to not get distracted.And it’s working for DeLeon."I’m good at task initiation, especially when I write things down," said DeLeon. "When my brothers and sister are playing, and they're loud, there's a 50/50 chance I don't get distracted by them.”"He’s gotten better at being independent and just doing it on his own without being asked multiple times.
